“A Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2008

We stayed for 2 weeks in this wonderful hotel, we could not fault it. The accomodation was good, very clean. The food was very good and very reasonable. The facilities were outstanding and the beach superb, so clean and quiet. The staff could not do enough to help and were always smiling. We would recommend this hotel for anyone going to Cambodia.

The hotel was very nice of course. We stayed in the annex, some 150 meters from the main entrance, which didn’t feel uncomfortable. A very quick walk. Not even near seaview and not on their own map even though. In between there's a large open area where the helicopters land, and there were during our stay several meetings in the hotel with government high shots, etc.

The standard of the room was then only 3+ (unlike the main building) but quite ok for us, 2 adults and 2 kids (6 and 8). We originally only had three large beds but we asked and for free we got an extra (small) mattress for the 6-year old to put on the floor, which was excellent. The original extra bed was too soft for an adult to sleep in.

We had a balcony viewing the hotel. On the other side of the house they were overlooking a pond and some trees. Due to this pond we think there were many mosquitoes, so we never really enjoyed the balcony, especially not in the evening.

The room was ok, it had a fridge (check against the list when you arrive as all on the list wasn’t in the fridge-bar when we got there) so we could put our own beer, coke etc.
We got four bottles of water each day which was excellent (included in the price).

The only real “bad” thing is that they cleaned rather bad, so once I took the broom from the cleaners and cleaned under the beds myself (rather dusty, and as we had one sleeping on the floor we wanted it to be clean). The cleaner came running after me and then did the job though.

For all football fans (real football, I mean soccer for you Americans who read this, your version should be called handball!!!) I can mention that they had several channels showing especially English football, but also other leagues. I got to see Aston Villa – Reading at 7.30 pm thanx to the early game in England (seven hours time difference), and being a big Villa-fan I of course enjoyed this opportunity.

If you wanted to use the hotel computer for surfing they took a heavy 8 dollars an hour (or was it 6...hm, can't remember). It’s only one dollar in all the places in town (very near). They have wireless LAN also if you bring your own computer. I don’t know if they charged for it though.

Food in the hotel was very good, with a good variety of international and Khmer dishes. But of course three times the prices in town and the other beaches.

As we stayed daytime in the hotel we ate lunch there as well. Still, considering the cost in Sweden (where we come from) it was still cheap. In the evenings we took one of the tuk-tuks to go elsewhere. During the two weeks we didn’t get ill once either (I mean stomach).

The beach was as others have mentioned excellent. Rather full though when we got down there after 10 am, but always room somewhere. At the end (beginning?) of the beach there were some vendors with shacks selling coke, water, beer etc at much cheaper prices than the hotel though. Two large bottles of water for 1 USD (don’t pay more) e.g.

The pool was surprisingly small for such a large hotel, but never crowded. Me too (like you Aussies etc) get mad with the people putting their towels in the morning and don’t show up until afternoon. Stop that!!!! Towels were free, as all chairs/sun beds etc, which always feels as a “gain” (compared with the Mediterranean where you could pay up to 7 euro for a whole day even if you don’t want to be there all day).

Another “gain” is the shuttle service that leaves twice a day. It’s odd schedule they have with pickup times, but anyhow, it’s a cheap way to get to victory hill in the evening if you’re going to eat there e.g. or go to the Snake House etc.

Yet other “gains” were the free exercise facilities with a large number of modern machines.

For us with kids under 12 they had a playroom (for free of course) where they could paint, build Lego etc. There were some personnel there too always (or just around the corner). When the sun was the hottest around noon it was good to throw them into this a/c room (even a bit too cold, but it’s just to tell the personnel to crank it down a bit).

The personnel, as the Cambodian people in general, is extremely friendly. Yes, their English isn’t the best, but hey…. They’re learning fast. Give them a break and don’t complain so much (especially you yanks who think all the world should be like the US… stay home if you can’t take it!!!), they’re really trying their best, always. Try some “Susseday” (hello) or Akoon (thanks) and you’re well appreciated.

So, all in all, an excellent place. Pricey but well worth it.

For you Swedish readers, we went with Fritidsresor, just fyi.

We stayed here in april 2007. The best choise in town i would say. Hughe and clean rooms and nice staff. Evening clean up, free daily newspaper, fruit and so on.
Try the spa, its free and next to the beach. I took a sauna every morning before i went to the beach and it was very relaxing. The restaurants are expensive. So we hired a tuk-tuk every night to eat something in the village. This is to far to walk in my opinion. The garden and pool are a little basic but this still is cambodia! The beach is guarded with military precision, i felt a bit uncomfertable with this. The localls were not allowed to come even near.
Overall a good choise

This place was quite amazing, with the only fault really being that their check in process is absolutely slow and painful (oh, and the biting things in the water, but that's not the resort's fault!).

We were staying there a few times, in between going elsewhere for a night or two, and this confused their reception staff no end. We were also left sitting on their 'welcome couch' for more than 20 minutes at one stage and when we asked how much longer it would be to check in (we were already later than the normal check in time) they said they couldn't tell us as the previous guests hadn't checked out (as if this was our problem)!

Having said that, the rooms were great (and we stayed in a few different ones, including one with a cool round bed), the breakfast and dinners very good if you were eating there. Lemongrass was a quality place right on the water to eat and drink and only a short stroll away.

The cocktails in the pool were, as always, very fun. I do think they might not have seen a group of 7 thirsty Aussies like us before, given the wide eyed approach to serving our many Margaritas etc. The food/drink shacks on the beach were also pretty cool.

The beach was lovely and free of the rubbish that plagues other beaches in the area.

Quite evident though here was the very peculiar Euro habitat of "reserving" lounges, seats etc. next to the beach and pool with their towel, even if they're not going to be there for hours! I think you folks from Europe need to get over this vile habit - use it or lose it dudes, or we'll just keep stealing your towels and disposing of them and leave you scratching your heads about what happened.......

Finally, their shuttle bus to Serendipity was a great resource which we used often, though if it doesn't seem to be coming at the time it's supposed to it's worth asking, as it seems if they haven't done a drop off then the pick up shuttle won't leave (unless you ask). They were very accomodating when we did have to ask. Tuk-tuks abound near the entrance, too, though, in case you don't want to be confined to the bus timetable. Don't pay more than $2US for 2 people though! One tip is if you're coming back from somewhere else by tuk-tuk get them to drop you at the beach and walk up, rather than getting whacked with the extra buck when they know you're staying at the resort. (That is, if you care about the extra buck...it's funny how you start to when you think you're paying way too much!)

  • Disliked — The European habit of trying to reserve seats, lounges etc. in the good spots when they're not even using them

The Sokha hotel is what you'd expect (in a good way) from a hotel in this star and price range. I definitely recommend it as a splurge stay in Sihanoukville.

The room was big, beautiful, and well-air-conditioned; the bathroom was lovely and had a separate bathtub and shower.

The hotel is on its own big beach, which is big and beautiful and not very populated. You can also walk to the public beach (there's no obnoxious barrier between them; seems to be some kind of honor system) and to a small fishing village at the other end (with painfully adorable kids who like saying "hello!"). The beach here is pretty flat, so I think it would be great for kids; it was definitely great swimming for us.

What I also liked is that the place was pretty understated. It was big and fancy and had a nice pool and all that, but it wasn't overly opulent.

Breakfast was a huge buffet with lots of western and Khmer food, and it was included in the price. The hotel also has a couple restaurants; we ate at the one on the beach, and while the food wasn't amazing, the view and atmosphere were.

The service was fantastic, no problems at all and everyone was very helpful. My boyfriend wasn't thrilled with the high numbers of tourists, but hey, it's a hotel. And I was more bothered by the sex-tourism ambience we came across at a restaurant in town than by the non-sex-tourists at Sokha.

Our only complaint was that they charged a huge amount for bottled water. You can't drink the water there (as they explicitly note in the room), so it seems like bad form to charge as much as $4.50 (!) for a 1.5 liter bottle of water. But really, that's the only negative I can think of.

We have stayed in this hotel for 10 days. It is a resort like hotel.
The rooms are nice and light but a little bit worn; there were black spots around the bath tub and underneath the airconditioner were quite a lot of moisture spots.
The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The staff is superb; everybody is very friendly and helpfull. We had a sea-view room and that meaned that you could see the sea but no frontal sea-view.
Prices in bar and restaurant are quite high. I think $ 5,50 for 2 cups of coffee is rather expensive, especialy for Cambodia.
The beach is beautiful and well kept and also the swimming pool is very nice. Sometimes not enough chairs available though because there are also visitors from outside the hotel and so during the weekend it was hard to find a chair.
I had a real good time in the Sokha beach but maybe 10 days was a bit much; a week would have been better.

I stayed at Sokha last november with 2 friends.

I read in another review that the reservation service was awful: it wasn't for us! We changed our reservation lots of time because we made a travel around Thailand, Laos and Cambodia and the hotel changed our reservation without problem everytime!

The room was very clean, new and large enough for 3 persons. The bathroom had shower and bathtube and every room had a balcony.

There are 3 or 4 restaurants: we tried only the buffet one because we went in Serendipity Beach that is close with tuktuk.
The buffet was very big and everything delicious: I'm Italian and I like to eat well...the food it was!! And the price wasn't too expensive.
The breakfast is gorgeous...there is a varied selection of different dishes.

The hotel has a beautiful swimming pool and it is very clean.

The beach is the best one of the town and it has comfortable beach-beds. The sand is perfectly clean: there are attendants who clean the beach lots of time during the day.
All along the beach there are bars and two places where you can take massages...

All the staff was amazing and speak a good english. In the hotel work a huge quantity of persons and they try to answer to every request!

The only thing that I have to complain is:
we decided to go to the Riem National park with a tour organized by the hotel, everything went well except for the lunch, only a poor sandwich..we paied 80 dollars and it's lot of money for Cambodia!!

The last thing...I would like to go there again !!!
