“Good of its kind”

A good place to relax after the temples of Angkor and the tuk-tuks of Phnom Penh, and there isn’t much incentive to leave it, for the attractions of Sihanoukville town are pretty much zero, and the hill station of Bokor is almost three hours’ drive away. The restaurant just off the lobby is a bit ho-hum, but if you eat at the Lemon Grass restaurant down on the beach (or at The Deck tapas bar which is effectively part of it) you will do better, and get a free ride there in a golf cart into the bargain. Spa good; cheesy live music in the lobby in the evenings bad. The service is a bit patchy, but the fries at the poolside bar are excellent.

Room Tip: You have to overlook the pool and the ocean; anything else will just be dull.

We had a friends wedding which was held here so thought it would be easier to stay at Sokha, and I must say, from reading previous reviews on TA I wasn't sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised:) The grounds were well kept, beach was super clean, facilities great, breakfast delicious, staff really friendly - one night I was very sick and the cleaner came in and just went that extra bit and made sure I was ok and comfortable! Some may feel it's a little on the pricey side, but worth that little bit extra for the clean beach with no hawkers.

Stayed at the Sokha for a week and had a great time! The private beach is superb, clean, quiet and the best one in the entire area by far! If you're coming for the beach, you can't and won' t be disappointed.

The deluxe room with pool view was nice and clean. The beds were comfortable and there was a pleasant little balcony as well!

There is indeed room for some little improvements, but they are mostly minor and I think people have been making a big deal out of them in this thread. Fresh juice and mango at breakfast would be nice, beach towels could be nicer, the temperature at the gym could be cooler, etc. But come on, is this really worth complaining about?

As a final note, more frequent shuttle services would be a definite improvement given the area, but tuk tuk rides are pretty cheap so it's not a big deal.

Highly recommended hotel if you can afford it!

The resort hotel had magnificent roofs Cambodian style but the rest of the decor was disappointing, furniture had seen better days, was cheap for a 5 stars, the gardens could be better with more foliage to make it more private as Grand Soluxe Angkor palace had. too many Russian thugs about bringing local girls prostitute (one night we were woken up by a fight in between a girl and a foulmouthed thug in a bedroom next to us!!!), not something you expect in a family hotel... the sex tourism is a shame in such a country which suffered so much and is trying hard to go up again. Casinos a gogo not helping its reputation. the hotel had one redeeming feature in its Lemongrass restaurant so well designed and where the food was delicious but very expensive. This resort needs a new look with better cambodian furniture and public places for seating, ie landings or concourses needs overhauling decorating. Gym good, pool ok, beach nice but again furniture suffering. staff adorable as usual.Food average, could do with checking good local restaurants and taking stock.Music live everynight terrible, american middle of the road stuff, and every night same same! would not go again nor recommend, Indepedence hotel looked better, classier although lunch ate there was really bad! Hope they'll upgrade clientele and looks as this is a huge hotel resort which seems to be the only one. competition needed but Sihanoukville needs a good clean up, and a good planning to become a nicer destination, nothing much there to see.and flora and fauna has been destroyed so the beach ideal is not there.. one day I hope unless it's goal is mass tourism with sex/casino low common denominator. good luck.
PS; the enormous mark up for taxis were a rip off, charging 460$ to go to Phnom Pen although we found a taxi for 60$...so 400$ for hotel??? all like this, exhorbitant fraud.

Room Tip: only choose pool side or sea side as others overlook carparks or aircon units, depressing! beware.

We spent 5 nights here (Over Chinese New Year) as part of a wider trip and were a little disappointed as it was not the peaceful tranquil place we were hoping for!
This is a big busy resort I am not sure if it was because of the Chinese New Year events but there were large groups of Asian guests who were extremely loud everywhere we went, people are entitled to make a noise and travel together of course and have fun but this is just a word of warning to people of what to expect.

The beach is lovely but seems uncared for, simple things would make such a difference, if they put out ashtrays for example people would not throw their butts on the sand, they shouldn't anyway I know! Also the lack of beach service is a bad thing, surely they want you to spend more so why not have someone walk up and down now and then, we were not bothered as we were lucky to sit by a beach bar most of the time, but a resort marketing themselves as 5* should at least try to provide a 5* service.

The room itself was fine, be warned if you book a "Garden View" this could mean a view of the Casino car park! For us we didn't mind as we just sleep in the room but some people would be bothered I guess.

After being in Cambodia and Laos for a while and camping in the jungle on the banks of the Mekong we had survived getting sick once, day one here we both got ill! this of course could have been a coincidence? However there were small things that raised our concerns; none of the staff preparing food and drinks round the pool wore gloves, there were often times when I was handed a glass by the rim, on more than one occasion I saw staff sneezing in their hand the going back to tending someone’s order, at the lunch buffet the place was teaming with flies and the food was uncovered - this is not what you expect for a 5 star resort! In complete contrast the food and standard at the Lemongrass and Deck Bar is world class! In fact this is the hotels saving grace and we ate there several times and were not disappointed, it is very expensive though.-The entertainment was quite funny, a man pretending to play the clarinet but actually miming it, the same for the guitar - hilarious!

All in all the resort is fine but really needs to pull its socks up, we stayed at the sister hotel in Siem Reap and it was far superior.

This resort hotel looked very promising on arrival with impressive Khmer style architecture and extensive grounds bounded by a long stretch of private beach. I can't fault our reception which was handled quickly and efficiently even though we arrived on a Friday afternoon at the same time as a big influx of Cambodian weekend guests. The hotel is very well presented with attractive sculpture and artwork and well tended greenery in the reception area and adjacent corridors. Our room was spacious, light and airy and the bed proved to be exceptionally comfortable. Just as well, as both my wife and myself spent much of one day pretty much confined to our room but more of that later. The bathroom was unexceptional but clean and functional. Again just as well!
Outside, our first impressions were favourable. Good facilities, a pleasant pool area with a bar, gymn, spa etc, all at hand. The aforementioned beach with sunbeds and beach parasols, shaded in part by trees, with two beach bars and at the end furthest from the main buildings,The Deck bar/restaurant and Lemongrass Restaurant where we enjoyed a tapas style late lunch are all part of the ambience.
The gilt began to wear off the gingerbread later when we tried to seek out a relaxing place for a sundowner before dinner. The hotel's website boasts 10 eating options and 5 bars. If this is a true representation of what is on offer, we failed to find half of them, though several of those which we found were none operational during our stay.
Our expectations of good cuisine had been fired by the tapas at The Deck. Sadly that was the last really good dining experience we had at Socha and indeed my wife went down with diarrhoea and vomiting on our first day there, after dining in the Champa Resaurant and I followed suit on the second after dining at The Deck in the evening. We reported this circumstance to the management, not by way of a complaint but as a precautionary measure to suggest they might like to review their operation, to be told we had suffered food poisoning, a phrase we had been careful not to use, but which was used again in a note of apology which appeared in our bedroom together with a complimentary bowl of fruit as recompense!
In spite of two days of illness, I don't wish to be negative about this hotel. It has a degree of charm and the sunsets viewed from the beach bar were exquisite. The staff are friendly and try to be helpful but appear to lack direction. I seriously question the management technique and input at this place.
If we return to Sianhoukville, which is not beyond the bounds of possibility, I think I would explore other options in regard to accommodation but the Sokha does have an undeniable something, which if the management got it's act together could turn it into a class act.

I really expected a better experience for the money I paid for one night at this resort. The facilities were patchy in quality and quite tired-looking. There was a late and noisy wedding party on the front garden which wasn't mentioned during check-in. The service was OK, but some of the staff didn't seem to know how to smile. The beach area was reasonably good, apart from the amount of rubbish (plastic bags, lids, rubber gloves) in the water. I was disappointed to see that. I also did a snorkelling safari with the resident water sports company. If you aren't very mobile and fit, don't bother. They use a little speed boat and getting on and off the boat is not easy. I will give credit for the little secluded spot the guide found, and the coral was quite interesting to see.

So overall, not bad, but not as good as I'd hoped.
