“Restaurant Review - wonderful”
Reviewed May 29, 2011

My partner and I had been searching all over town for lobster, and not the smaller Bay Lobster. It was a lost cause so we finally gave in and went to Sokha, thinking it would be highly expensive, but would have what we wanted. First, the grounds are gorgeous. The restaurant is set apartment. I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were. Yes, they did have lobster, but not prepared the way my partner wanted, for some reason only a soup would do!). The service was impeccable. Although we were only offered the seafood menu initially it turns out there is a tapas and a Japanese menu. There is also a good wine selection with several by the glass, prices go up for the bottles, naturally. Amusingly, the easiest thing on the menu to prepare was by far the last to come out.....maybe because it wasn't seafood and the kitchen wasn't really prepared for it. We had cocktails and then a bottle of Malbec. We then went down to the beach for awhile, but came back to order more drinks. The staff were funny and very, very well trained. We then rented a hotel van to run some errands and get back to our own guesthouse. People could not have been more polite and accomodating. The food was delicious and we are thinking to go back. Next time in town, I'll want to check out the accomodation prices....this is low season.

This hotel is by far the best in town but thats not hard! The beach is pleasant and clean and the poolside nice too though full of kids! Maybe if we had them we'd be more tolerant... The breakfast is ok, enough choice etc, but it doesn't feel all that fresh and the cooked stuff not hot (pet hate of mine!)

Room was lovely and always cool and the staff were nice enough. Their lemongrass restaurant is AMAZING!!!

Maybe this review reflects the comparison we made between sohka and raffles in siem reap?!

First impressions of the hotel & reception area were good. We received a nice refreshing welcome drink on arrival and all staff at reception were friendly and efficient. Whilst we were escorted to our room, we were given a brief summary of the hotel amenities and our luggage followed very close behind us.

We had opted to pay a nominal fee for a Club Suite room and we benefitted from a large airy room with a chaise longue, a huge circular bed (!) and fruit & flowers on arrival. Nice view overlooking the pool area and across towards the sea. Good standard of cleanliness & decoration and fully equipped with cable TV, fridge, safe, hairdryer etc.

Pool area was large & surrounded by nice gardens, with a plentiful supply of sun loungers and pool towels. No animation team, but there was an activities board near the pool bar. Friendly & helpful staff at the pool bar – lovely swim up bar, but usual high prices for drinks/snacks + tax! The pool area was very quiet for the entire duration of our stay, so we often had the massive pool all to ourselves, which was fabulous.

A short stroll to the private beach where there were more sun loungers & a couple of beach bars. Lovely soft white sand and fairly shallow, warm, calm sea. Again, all quiet and absolutely no beach hawkers! Nice place for watching the sunset.

Food & service at breakfast were excellent. The waiting staff were slightly over-attentive if that’s possible (!), but always very friendly. We dined at “Lemongrass” twice during our stay, which has a beautiful setting overlooking the ocean. Great choice of food from across the Orient – obviously higher prices than outside the hotel, but a real treat not to be missed.

This is a great hotel for being close enough to the bars & restaurants of Sihanoukville in the evening (the hotel even puts on a free shuttle bus!), but also being able to escape from the backpacking crowds and the street hawkers who do tend to hassle you at the public beach area. This is a great place to unwind after all the busy sightseeing in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh – a high class hotel which would rival any 4* or 5* in the region.

Sokha Beach Resort is in my view the best beach resort in Cambodia. The private (and immaculately clean) beach, great service, good quality and reasonably priced food, and arguably the best spot on Cambodia's coast for a sundowner beer make this a great all-round option.

I have always found the Sokha to be a very relaxing place to stay: you can check in here and forget all about the world beyond the resort's boundaries for a couple of days if you so choose. The resort has everything you need for a beach escape, including immediate access to the beach, water sports, a huge pool with safe swimming area for kids. The staff are attentive and eager to please (during our last stay, one of the groundskeepers walked a few hundred meters to carry a couple of day-beds down onto the sand for us, then another hundred meters to bring us fresh towels). And if you do want to explore, tuk tuks into town or across to one of the other beaches cost a few dollars.

We have stayed at the Sokha Beach Resort several times over the last 3 years, in several different room types. All were large and well appointed, but the over-water chalets were the stand-out option (the private jacuzzi on the chalet deck with views over the beach was an added bonus!)

It would be remiss of me to fail to mention the eating and drinking options as well - the food is great and much more reasonably priced than I had thought it would be, in particular at the new Deck tapas bar and Lemongrass restaurant at the far end of the resort's beach. The seafood at Lemongrass was a particular standout - I can strongly recommend the scallops and the whole grilled grouper (both of which came in easily under $20). If it's a clear night, sit out on the deck and watch the moon rise over the water, while crabs scuttle about beneath the wooden boards - magic!

A way from the town, the beach is delightful….until your gaze meets the shanty town on the far right! You can see where the hotel beach ends in both directions because of the sudden amount of litter

The food is adequate but nothing more and I was perturbed to see the number of flies on the food at breakfast time – this needs to be sorted out!

The pool and sea are delightful and the staff are a joy (including Dr Seng the in house Dr on whose services we were obliged to call but please note that our need of him was nothing to do with the hotel)

This is a good hotel for a couple of nights R and R after temple trekking but I don’t believe that it alone would be worth the long distance haul

I was a bit concerned about those posh bungalows – sat in murky looking water on stilts overlooking that shantytown.

It is hard to believe that a resort so much higher priced than all the others in the area would have a swimming pool with no stairs (except in the baby pool), no hand rail, round (not flat) uncomfortable ladder rungs, and so little access for entry and egress. Such is Sokha! It has a gorgous beach but permits noisy smelly jet skiing. It has a large lovely restaurant with only fair food. It has gorgeous property with big corporate events in the middle of everything. Although the beach at Sokha is really great, it might pay to stay at a much cheaper hotel and take a tuk tuk to the beach. After all, at double to triple the price of other small hotels, you can pay for a lot of tuk tuk rides.
