“Completely Done Right for us”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

Done Right is absolute heaven on Earth. Beautiful people and beautiful staff with possibly the best 'Western' menu option in the whole of Cambodia. My girlfriend and I stayed TWO MONTHS in Done Right during the quiet season. We were looking for the perfect stretch of beach to pass a few weeks in Cambodia and we were directed to Otres Beach just near Sihonoukville. The beach when we arrived was just what we wanted, quiet bliss on the edge of a National Park, pure paradise.. and right down at the end of the beach we found Done Right.

It was perfect. Just how you'd imagine the cast of 'The Beach' living and getting along if everything went perfectly well for them! We were given a long-term deal on our Dome which became our beloved home for those months we spent there. Otres Beach is a remarkable stretch of untouched Cambodian coast with plenty of little places to put your head down but we felt that Done Right, being one of the very first places to set up on Otres, was definitely the most integrated and accustomed to the area and the western/cambodian staff had an enormous sense of community between them and neighboring settlers, who became like family to us.

Like I said, we spent 2 months there. We saw some unfortunate things happen. Once the water went brown for a week, because the Well ran dry and they had to dig for a new one. I've noticed a very nasty review here from people who came to stay in that unfortunate week which is completely unfair. [--] happens. I had something stolen from me at the bar from a kleptomaniac traveler, and had it retrieved by most helpful staff who spent days solving the crime on my behalf. Again, this was just a random unfortunate occurrence which could happen anytime and anywhere. There were very infrequent electricity problems, again one of which has made it here as a nasty review by a fleeting visitor but Done Right is essentially existing on the fringes of where civilized Cambodia meets nature and of course there are going to be some problems.

Done Right is not just about a one night stay. If there are any bad reviews of Done Right on this website, I've noticed them coming from disgruntled short-stay travelers, all TOO familiar with specific mods&cons and wanting very specific types of rooms they've become accustomed to prefer. Done Right is more Boutique Festival than Travelodge or Hilton. It strives to bring you a super comfortable haven far off the beaten track, far enough to detach yourself from civilization for as long as suits you. I can not recommend it highly enough for traveling couples who fancy a good rest from moving around too much.

Hope to see you all again soon Done Right. Sorely missed xxxxxxx

My husband and I originally stayed at Done Right as it was one of the only places left with a double room when we first arrived in Otres Beach, plus we were greeted with such friendliness from the start. We had planned to stay for a few days before heading out to the islands, but loved it here so much that we ended up staying for 2 weeks. We would have stayed longer, but the visas were running out and we wanted to see a little more of Cambodia before we left.

Otres Beach itself is fantastic - beautiful and a really chilled place to hang out. There were also some great parties, where we proved to the youngsters that the oldest backpackers in town could still out-party most of them!

Done Right suited us down to the ground - we loved our quirky little eco-dome, and the laid back and friendly vibe of the place. We felt right at home from the moment we arrived, so couldn't see the point in moving anywhere else. Sure, the domes can get a little hot during the day, so we'd go to the beach just across the road, catch the sea breeze, and cool off in the water. Cleanliness-wise it was good enough, certainly as good if not better than many places we'd stayed at in SE Asia. We found the bed to be refreshingly comfortable after a lot of the concrete-disguised-as-mattresses that seem to be the norm in Thailand and Laos! As we stayed for a couple of weeks, we did find that we had to request for the room to be cleaned and clean towels, but this was always done on the day we asked. We didn't have the problems with mossies that others have mentioned, and although we started getting a few too many ants at one point, this was also dealt with immediately with a can of ant killer and an offer to move rooms if it didn't sort it (it did).

The only things that I think could be done better would be to supply loo paper to the rooms, as others have said - it's all well and good just helping yourself to paper from the dispensers on the tables, but I'd prefer to be given a box or a roll to have in the room. There was a bum gun though, so it was easy to go native if that's your way - personally I still like to have some paper so I can dry off after using them, though! The water doesn't look mega-clean as also mentioned, though this seemed to be a general thing across Otres - someone at another place told me it was the amount of iron in the water there, which made sense as it did have a slightly metallic smell. A few more washing lines to hang washing would be good, too - we hand wash a lot of our clothes, so rigged our own "line" up by our dome using a bungee, as the only ones supplied were mostly in the shade and quite limited.

The food was fantastic, with both Western and Khmer choices. We did our best to work through the menu while we were there, and especially enjoyed the group dinners. Do try the Khmer food across the road at Sunshine though, especially the Lok Lak.

All in all we loved our time at Done Right, and will definitely stay there again if/when we get back to Otres (which I really hope we will!).

My advice is to get a basic but clean cheap room or stay in dorm. The main appeal here is the communal atmosphere, gym, friendly western and local staff, great food, live music, and tbh, just in general you can chill here, play pool, table tennis, meet friends, family dinners on Sundays.... All in all this isn't a hotel, it's a communal living area full of interesting and cool people who place social contact over luxurious rooms. All the negative reviews seem to be about the domes, but some people love them for the quirky factor! The people who run this place I now consider good friends. All in all, a blast!

The staff here were so friendly, especially Sam who helped us out a lot, great location the sea less than a minute walk and a good atmosphere, would definitely recommend, just watch out for the sandy coloured dog!

To contextualize this review, I have been travelling a fair few months in SE Asia and left Serendipity beach for Ostres beach. I was also well aware Ostres will be slightly more expensive. I am mid 20s travelling with my boyfriend.

We paid 20 dollars a night for the dome. The dome was very warm and stuffy and due to the design, allowed no ventilation and the skylight ensured the room was incredibly bright as soon as sun broke. The idea is a quirky one but unfortunately, it was an uncomfortable stay. Rooms could have been cleaner and I do believe they are a little over-priced for what they offer.

Staff were friendly enough though and based in a good location, just not our cup of tea.

I stayed at Serendipity for a couple of days, but hated the place and decided to move to Otres. This was the best decision I could have made! I was suppose to stay for 2 days, but liked Otres and especially Done Right so much that I almost stayed for 2 weeks.
I stayed in the dorm, the single room and later on in the triple room with my friends and the single room was ok, but definitely loved the dorm and triple room!
The food is great, the location is perfect, but the best thing about the place is definitely the staff! You get to know everyone there and they really make you feel like home. If you can, definitely try to stay for the family dinners on Sundays! You all have dinner together with who ever wants to join and after you can enjoy the live music! These guys are awesome!
I've been traveling through South East Asia for a while now and stayed in a lot of nice hostels, but this one is my absolute favorite and I plan on coming back for sure! If you don't like this place, you must have done something really wrong ;)

We managed just one sleepless night here before moving. On viewing the geodome we were assured the design allowed it to cool down at night so much so that you would need a blanket-this was far from the truth. It was the hottest time of the year and unfortunately the power cuts out regularly but they have a generator, just no one bothers to get up and turn it on during the night when the power goes at 1.30am so we were left to cook in the little domes without the fan or any ventilation whatsoever. Its actually much cooler outside than in the geodomes-not a good design for the hot weather. And the skylight means your up at first light anyway.

Sheets were stained and dirty, bed was a thin foam matress, fan was old and pathetic. Toilet paper wasnt provided, we were told to help ourselves to serviettes from the restaurant tables. Shower water smelt bad.

As it was the quiet season the domes were going for $18, they are actually worth a lot less. Staff were friendly and helpful. Seemed to be a lot of europeans working there though which takes away from the experience somewhat.

We moved down to Otres 2 which is quieter but has a cleaner beach. Shangri-la offered us a large room with hi speed fan, comfy hotel style bed and clean bathroom for $25 including breakfast! Well worth it!
