“Imaging you come back from a day trip and your room has been given to somebody else!”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

We stayed three nights at the Cove a/c room, when they kicked us out while we were arriving from a boat trip. 1 day before we had extended our stay and confirmed it twice. Now they told us that a group has arrived and they need the room. They offered us a room for 25$ without a/c, strange enough because when we arrived this room was offered for 24$. Then we had to go accompanied by a staff to our room and pack all our stuff while he was watching us not to touch the bed and anything else, because it was already prepared for the new guests. After this absolutely rude behaviour we decided to leave immediately. We have to say this place is overpriced for what they offer: You will not be able to use your balcony in the night because of mosquitos heaven. Breakfast is also not god, the coffee, if you would say that to it, is awful. So better get a real hotel room or go to one of they beautiful islands, but the Cove: never ever!!!

Stayed here for two nights last week and had a great time. The rooms have everything you need and are clean and breakfast was really good. The bar however is dangerous if you lack willpower to leave, due to the excellent, friendly staff there. The best place we stayed in Sihanoukville and would definitely go back. Thanks to Nick, Kyle, Maddie and the rest of the team there.

I had booked this based on the hotels' attractive website and reviews, which in hindsight was rather naive. We had booked one of the "new AC queensize rooms" which looked very pleasing on the website. Pictures only showed an attractive bed with mosquito net, and a view out onto the balcony and I realised why when we arrived. After climbing the very steep and somewhat unsafe stairs to the top we opened the door and the room smelt musty. There was absolutely nowhere to put anything. A bamboo coat stand with a few hangers. The "bathroom" was tiny with a handheld shower hooked on the wall which no doubt would have gone all over the place. There was an ancient TV and a severe lack of other amenities which one would expect for $39. No wonder there were no other pictures of the room. My husband was concerned about the stairs and we immediately went around the town and found a fabulous de luxe room with swimming pool access and luxury bathroom at the Serendipity Beach Resort for $45. We went straight back and checked out forfeiting one night's fee. It was worth it as there was no way we were going to trek up those stairs, sleep in a musty room or cope with the "shower spray". Admittedly the location is quiet compared to the rest of the resort, but the sea below is rocky and swimming would be a hazard. Although the Lonely Planet rated this as their top choice, it definitely needs some TLC. There are so many other places in the area offering better standards and this place is just totally overpriced for what it is offering. We were very disappointed we we had high hopes but in future a lesson to learn is to check Tripadvisor reviews rather than the hotel's website.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room at the top unless you like hiking!

My stay started with a mishap. The hotel was supposed to arrange for a pick up at the Phnom Penh airport. The pick up never happened, leaving me stranded at the airport with no idea what to do. The airport staff called the hotel repeatedly for me, but they never picked up. I ended up spending two nights in PP before making it down to Sihanoukville. When I finally got to the Cove, the management was apologetic enough, but...

My AC room was fine, but it was all the way at the top of several steep staircases. I knew there would be a bit of a climb, but I didn't quite expect that, and it was a hassle. The room was clean and well kept. The bathroom was... tired and could use some real refurbishment.

The public areas were nice enough. Lots of lounge chairs and tables. Management and staff are friendly. It's a short walk to other beaches. However, the website claims it's a quick walk to Sokha Beach. It's not. And what the website fails to mention is that the walk is in the back of all the hotels, locked metal gates/walls on one side of you, jungle on the other, and no shade on the dirt path. I walked for five minutes before turning back. It didn't feel right.

The beaches were a lot dirtier than I thought they would be. This is a Sihanoukville problem though, not a Cove problem.

We made a mistake in aiming for this place based on Lonely Planet recommendation. Lonely Planet described the hassle you can expect at Sihanoukville bus station and the syndicate running the taxi's although we didn't have any trouble. Due to this we thought we'd better have a clear plan about where to stay. The location of the hotel is very good and close to the sea. Not much of a beach at this part but only a five minute walk to the main beach. The rooms are only just big enough to fit a bed in, we had to negotiate walking around the rucksacks! Expect to get bitten at night regardless of mosquito nets. Our room was overpriced at $40 - I think this was the most we paid anywhere. If you are on a budget, dormatories in the town start at $2. We found Lonely Planet quite misleading about the town. All of the beaches are OK although it could be fairly noisy at night even though it seemed there were more bars than people in the evening.

what a disappointment! we chose cove beach because of the recommendation in lonely planet. the place is totally run down, the ramshackle bungalows are dark inside and little bigger than a double bed, and they charge extra for a "deluxe" bungalow which contains an antique television as an only added value.

the "manager", an englishman, spent his whole time at the bar getting drunk, treating his local stuff rudely and grunting at guest who dared to ask for their room key or if electricity would be back working again after 8 hours without it. in a low wage country like cambodia, this place would be ok for about 10$ a night, but for christmas season they charged more than 80$.
