After having been to Sihanoukville before and having some knowledge of the area my friends and I decided to stay at Sunday Guesthouse due to lower prices and being set back from the main drag. The place is brand new, really clean and has all the trimmings eg Wifi, hot showers, balconies, cable, elevator. However where are the staff? We stayed for a total of 4 nights and only briefly communicated with staff checking in and out. Both communications were cold, unorganised and very short. Other than that there was nobody in sight, litterally, with the exception of the occasional housekeeper and security guard. This wasn't an issue for us since we knew where to go and what to do but If you're new to the area or need advice you won't be able to find it here. With saying this Sunday Guesthouse has 2 seperate buildings directly ajacent and we were placed in the newer building at the back but you'd think if they were expanding the business they would hire enough staff to at least be present in both buildings. We were happy to take care of ourselves but lets just say it wouldn't be hard for someone to rob the place as the keys all just hang in the unmanned foyer. A bit weird? Maybe an off week, who knows. Good for a bed not for company.

Room Tip: The new building at the back was very nice. No staff though?

If you're looking to be right in the mix of the "backpacker district" this isn't the place. It is about a 10 minute walk until you get right into the heart of it all. This place was well worth it though, the price for a massive double room was 15 bucks. When we wanted to party we just walked down the road and enjoyed buckets and food on the main strip.
This is quite a newer place, and make sure that you are put in the newer building not the older one.
Walk across the street and you hit a Lucky's, walk down and to the right you're at the lion round-a-bout and right in the backpacker scene. If you're looking for a tidy place, at a decent price check this place out. Lastly, if you're looking to converse in English with anyone, I think that we only met one gentleman that spoke broken English. Wasn't a bother though, just walk to the backpacker district and you'll receive all the information you could possible want about the area.

Room Tip: Go for a corner room and balcony.

Me and a friend came back to the hotel one night and the gate was closed. we yelled and knocked on the gate, but nobody opend. After a while wewe decided to open the gate, when we pulled the handle the whole gate crashed into the street nearly hitting us. we tried to put the gate back, but it was too heavy.
The next morning we were calle down to the reception where we were told that the gate had hit a car when i fell. and that we had to pay 1000USD for the damage. They told us they had it all on tape and that we tipped the gate intentionally. we knew there was no car, and asked to see the survallancevideo. They refused to show us the video and called the police when we refused to pay.
they held us for several houers. and it all ended whit us paying 100USD each because we had to go to the airport.
Worst hotel experience ever!

This comes with a caveat that I cannot compare hostels in Phnom Peng BUT although the family were friendly, the guest house is very tired and dated and down a dark and dingy road. I will credit the rooms were large and beds comfy. A large bathroom with both a shower and a bath BUT cold water ( they advertise hot water) and no plugs .... Bathroom tiles old and needed a good clean. The road the hotel is on is out of the way of the main town and I recommend staying loser to the river where its looks cleaner and more lively and more used to tourists. Room and bathroom windows mozz netting had holes in them so we were grateful we invested in Mozzy nets..the first and only time we used them in our three week tour of Thailand and Cambodia ( didn't even need them when we stayed in a raft house on the River Kwai), The food was basic here and they had little information about local attractions/ tours or information of travelling onwards. They do show the film the Killing Fields every night at 7pm..... It is worth seeing this before you actually visit Cambodia especially if you do visit S21 or/and the Klling Fields.
I cannot recommend this hostel but also cannot compare to others in Phnom Peng. I would, however, recommend staying close to the river which looks safer and cleaner...
Do not book your ongoing trip via the hostel but go into the main town area where it is cheaper and the same bus. We booked via the Hotel to be taken straight to Koh Chang ( direct without stops....we should of known!!!) and were sold the same luxury bus with toilet took us even on the boat to Koh Chang. Not a luxury bus, No toilet, picked up and dropped off many locals adding to the journey time, and dumped at the border! No explanation etc on what to do over the border. There was a mini bus waiting which we had to change twice and they dumped us at Trat although we paid to go to Koh Chang.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

We booked in here last minute for £10. So wasn't expecting anything special but I must say it was a really nice room, large, clean, big flat screen tv. It was a bit of a walk into town and the beach but ok to stay in for 1 night. The staff locked away our valuables when we went out and on returning the manager had left and we could not retrieve them which was a bit of an inconvenience but at least they were safe for the night! Was a fairly pleasant stay and would probably stay here if there was no where else nearer the beach.

Quiet large & boring hotel (~45 rooms), about 15 min from the beach, but no other advantages, no restaurant, there’re more charming places in Sihanoukville, Negotiate and agree the price before you take the room, room prices vary from 1 h to the next. We had to pay up as we stayed 2 instead of 3 days.

I usually stay in this guesthouse while in SHV, as it's just perfect match for my needs. Clean enough, staff friendly, even there is no safe in rooms, I've never heard anyone would have got their belonings stolen here (I have dozen+ of expat friends who live in SHV). Any problems, and their do their best to get it fixed.
It's Cambodia, and Sihanouk Ville especially, so best is not always something in western standards could expect.

Rooms are relatively cheap, $12 per night even during peak season (excluding Christmas eve and NYE), and you'll get room with hot water and AC. Fridge usually by request, and balcony too if rooms are free, for no extra cost. Pretty good internet connection which works in rooms too.

Place is also owned by locals, which helps if you rent a motorbike from there and have issue with traffic police. They have generator for electricity, I didn't experience any blackouts in hotel, while half a dozen outside during my stay.
