“Nasty and Tasteless”
Review of Serendipity Beach

Serendipity Beach
Reviewed March 10, 2013

You want to go to a nasty beach where it is party time, where young girls are abused, where beach boys and girls are in plenty supply, where anything goes? Then this is the place for you. If you want a family beach then go elsewhere to the resorts. I wish Cambodia and other Asian countries would outlaw the sex trade especially with young girls and boys. Too many creeps around this place.

This place is fine if you like to be constantly drunk, listen to rubbish music and get no sleep. The beach itself is dirty with rubbish and unkept. The set up of the beach is like a tacky spanish resort with rows of sunbeds and be prepared to be constantly hustled by rude beach sellers who are more than happy to throw a bit of abuse at you when you say 'no'.
The people here all seem lazy and not in a chilled out kinda way.
Our hotel was in the quieter area but still we were kept awake till 5am by the thumping music at the other end of the street. I spoke to the hotel manager and he said its because they pay the police off, why don't the hotels do the same. I'm paying enough to stay here, $35 per night (and not worth over $15) and the hotels either side and charging equal or more so I don't see why they don't stand up for themselves and let their customers enjoy the peace and quiet.
The accommodation here is all very poor and not good value for money so don't expect any kind of luxury or service. Your probably better off staying a bit further out at a nice resort with a decent swimming pool. Or Otres beach is lovely, we just spent a week there and are heading back for another week. It costs $4-5 for a tuk tuk from the town centre.

did not rate this beach. very dirty too busy and very pushy beach sellers, sun beds that they have used for 30 years and you have too keep your eye on your belongings. if you want a relaxing day on the beach go to otres beach a few kilometers away.

Realistically, Serendipity beach is just the North part of Occheautal beach, and it's not entirely sure where one becomes the other. Both are packed with bars, most of which will serve BBQ food, western and Khmer dishes. Serendipity has possibly slightly more bar than restaurant feel to it. The curve of the bay lets you sit sipping a cocktail watching dusk fall over the huge expanse of beach; very diverting. As the evening goes on it gets a bit busy. Both of us suffered a dose of Montezuma's revenge after eating there, so food hygiene might not be great. The beachfront itself is a bit scruffy, and you do tend to get pestered by street traders and beggars; that said the level of hassle here is imperceptible compared to Egypt or Vietnam.

Coming from Australia we have been spoiled with beautiful beaches even in built up areas. From the posters of serendipity we were expecting something reasonable. Couldn't bring myself to swim in it. Otres much better - at least I could swim and much less crowded
