We are in NorCal this weekend for the national championship football game and friends recommended that we had to stop at this winery. We booked reservations online and are most grateful we did. The grounds are amazingly beautiful, even in winter. It was rainy and once inside we were greeted warmly in the main building by a smiling Jeff who gave us both a pouring of sparkling wine. He made a phone call and only a couple of minutes later, Jeff introduced us to Garrett who had came over from the Chateau. Garrett asked where we were from (Texas), where we were staying (Sab Francisco), if we were first time visitors (yes), if we were familiar with our wines(yes), about our wine preferences (whites and reds) and how we heard about the winery. Garrett told us about how the winery came to be called Chateau St. Jean (like a pair of Levi 'jeans' not john). He showed us the Chateau's fireplace room, the magnificent woodwork in the 100Y old residence and then into the dining room where we were seated at the only available table in an elegant intimate area with other guests. We were spellbound as Garrett described each of the 8 wines (4 whites and 4 reds) and examples of foods they pair with. Butch brought us a complimentary cheese plate and we then shared all 8 wines. I had the 4 whites while my husband had the 4 reds. Garrett also poured us a "mystery wine" and asked that we not guess what it was, but only if we liked it or not. (He said there was a right answer). We enjoyed all 8 wines, 7 of which aren't in the retail stores. We LOVED the mystery wine (a cabernet) and purchased 2-bottles when he said the restaurants in the area do corkage. We had a most enjoyable experience and time and didn't want to leave. Garrett answered each of our questions with knowledge and in a most unassuming manner. We overhead Butch talking to others, too. They both made us feel relaxed, welcome and made time for us. They were professional, yet fun and not condescending like some other hosts were. We stopped at wineries in Napa and Sonoma. In our experience, spend your time and money in Sonoma. It's friendlier, not high pressured or commercial and the wines are better priced and taste better. We totally highly recommend this winery, the wines, Garrett (and Butch) and that you book reservations if you do a reserve tasting. Have fun!

The large tasting room is fine, but I would spend the extra dollars to upgrade your tasting to a sit down tasting in the French chateau. Wide selection of their finer wines to choose for tasting accompanied by several cheeses, dried fruit and olives. It’s a nice step up from many of the other tasting experiences.
The wines are wonderful and you will likely buy a few bottles!

The grounds and the chateau are so tranquil, even with numerous visitors, and there is something for everyone here. Lots to see and lots of great wines to try. We did the Sips and Bites tasting on the patio and it was fun and informative and our host Butch answered all our questions while pouring generous tastings of our favorite wines.

We came as a group of ten and everything was handled quickly and efficiently, even with all ten of us choosing our four favorite wines to taste, all different. That’s standard for the $35 tasting but I’m still amazed they got it all ready got. Great time, great value, and great photos.
