The Julian Gold Rush Hotel is the oldest continuously operated hotel in Southern California and is very well maintained while retaining it's historical ambiance. The hot breakfast is great and served in a room with the portraits of the original owners from the late 1800s, Albert and Margaret Robinson, and Abraham Lincoln. Tea is served in the same room every afternoon and you can use the room throughout the day. The rooms are very charming and cozy and historically small which adds to the connection with the past. No phones and TVs make the experience complete.

The hotel is family owned and operated by father and daughters. All of the staff is very friendly and eager to make your stay enjoyable. Julian is also a historic town with fun shops and an interesting museum. Julian is surrounded by beautiful country, apple orchards and wineries.

I have been staying at the Julian Hotel for over 30 years and enjoy every visit.

We are glad to hear you enjoyed the historical essence that the hotel has to offer. The hotel has a tremendous amount of history and we try to show it off but also allow for modern day conveniences, such as free wi-fi trough out Also for those interested in larger rooms they are available on the first floor and cottages.

My sister and I spent the night here and used a Living Social voucher for a weeknight stay as a girls night getaway. The voucher included a pie from the Julian Pie Shop. The pie shop offered ready-to-eat and ready-to-bake pies, just bring an insulated bag or cooler to keep your ready-to-bake pie in for your trip home. Check-in is at 3pm, we arrived around at 5pm and still had several rooms to choose from. The room we stayed in had a little extra space because the bed was positioned against the wall. However, that meant I had to craw over the foot of the bed or my sister to get in and out of it. After checking-in we made our way to afternoon tea that is included with your stay and is served from 5-6pm in the parlor. Both tea (an assortment of tea bags) and coffee (regular and decaf) are available along with a selection of cookies and sliced sweet breads for an afternoon pick-me-up. There is a basket located outside the parlor at the base of the stairs with menus from local restaurants, we narrowed our dining options down then took out on foot to explore the town and decide on a spot for dinner. The Witchcreek Winery has a wine tasting room and sales office a short walk down Main Street, they even offer a military discount. After dinner most of the shops were closed so we made our way back to the hotel and sat in the parlor until it closed at 9pm. There are board games, puzzles, and books available and the common areas and rooms have complimentary WiFi access. To join the WiFi network all you need is the password available at the front desk. After the parlor closed we made our way out on to the porch for a little while, then up to our room. There is limited closet/storage space so we opted to store the things we bought in town in the trunk of our car rather than in the room. There are window units available for air conditioning, it was cool enough that we didn't need to use it. The bathroom is very tiny but clean with little to no area to set toiletries. We could hear light street traffic in the room but slept soundly. In the morning we went down for breakfast in the parlor offered from 8-9am. Breakfast was filling, there was granola cereal, fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, bread, tea, and coffee. The Queens Oats granola is really delicious, we bought some to take home with us. There are a variety of packages available if you go to the hotel's website http://www.julianhotel.com I look forward to our next visit to Julian!

Room Tip: Get there right at 3pm to have the best selection of rooms available and pick a room facing the cour...

Thank you for the kind review. We are glad you enjoyed us and the town. Yes, the rooms are smaller due to the history of them. However we heard your concern regarding shelves in the bathrooms to place toiletries and we have since added extra shelving and hooks in all the guest bathrooms to offer that additional space. For those guest interested in larger rooms they are available on the first floor and cottages. There are also rooms away from the main st if you are concerned with any street noise.

We love this place, it has so much history. We love the scones and cream during tea time. We expected a continental breakfast, it was served hot to us. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. One of the other couples complained that there's no TV in the rooms. I think if you are going to be in Julian, it's a getaway, lot of hiking, talking and getting back to nature. I didn't miss the TV at all. Went out early morning to watch mother nature's TV, saw some deer, turkey, coyotes and lots of birds. One small note on my part, I'm not a big guy, but the shower is very small, every time I turned, I as hitting my elbow. And of course this is right stab in the middle of Main St, so everything is within walking distance (well the town is only about 3 blocks long)

We are pleased to here you had a relaxing getaway. Yes the hotel and town does offer many things for guest to do rather than TV. However for those that want to stay connect or watch programs online we do offer free wi-fi through out the hotel. The rooms on the second floor may have smaller showers than others, however we can try to set aside a room that may be more comfortable for you in the future with a larger bathroom.

I have stayed here before, and this time had a Living Social coupon for a weeknight (with a free Julian Apple Pie Shop pie as well). I was the first to arrive at 3PM check-in so had my pick of all the upstairs rooms. They are small, but immaculate, and nicely furnished with antiques and quilts. I chose #7 (the Nimitz room) which is on the northwest corner, so had two windows. It can be combined with #6 into a family suite if desired. Bathroom was adequate, and the bed comfortable. Free WiFi. There is AC, but the weather was pleasant so just kept the windows open. No TV or room phone, which is a pleasant break. Walls are thin, and there was some street traffic noise, but nothing that was excessive.

Tea was from 5-6PM and was a nice combination of quick breads and cookies with both hot and cold tea, and coffee. Unlike previous visits, the inn keeper did no socialize with the guests during the tea.Parlor closes at 9PM, which is unfortunate for those who may want to sit there and play some of the board games they have available (they need some jigsaw puzzles!!) in the evening after dinner.

Breakfast was served in the parlor from 8-9AM. Had the famous granola (as good as ever) and OJ plus eggs Florentine (in a ramikin), fresh fruit and yogurt, and some toasted Dudley's Bakery bread. Tables for four, which were not offered for sharing, so some had to wait, although I offered the rest of my table to a couple who joined me, and we had a very nice visit while eating.

Overall, a very pleasant stay at this historic inn, and I plan to return.

Room Tip: Recommend #7 for more light and privacy.

We are glad to hear you took advantage of the living social deal offered and enjoyed your stay. Also glad to hear you liked the opportunity to choose your room upstairs. We find that to be a fun experience for the guests. Yes, the parlour does close at 9pm on weekdays. However the lobby is available 24 hours with an area to play games. We also do have a large basket of many jigsaw puzzles to choose between in the lobby 24 hours. During breakfast we like to offer guests the chance to share tables with others rather than wait. We are sorry if that was overlooked during the time you were there. Sometimes we offer and guests say the would rather wait but once another guests invites them they feel more comfortable and decide to join. However we are very please to hear you offered and enjoyed the time with new people.

Julian Gold Rush is a historical hotel, founded by a free slave and his wife. Many famous people have slept there. It is on the main street in town within walking distance of all shops, and eateries, and churches. The rooms still retain the charm of times bygone, however, have updated bathroom facilities. My husband and I spend one afternoon, laying across the bed, chatting and enjoying the wind blowing in from the window and the peacefulness of the environment. The day before, we had enjoyed the local music festivatal in the area. We spent early mornings and early evenings sitting outside on the long veranda, talking with folks as they walked up and down the main street, often inquring about the hotel. We invited them to take a gander inside for themselves.
Breakfast was served on time every morning, carefully prepared and presented. Tea time was every afternoon at five with a variety of teas, coffees and sweets.
If you are looking for old times, wallpaper on the walls, brass beds, tiny chairs of your childhood, and a small space to hang one or two garments this is the place.. Charming, and full of memories, we will return to stay another spell
PS. Everything was in working order and clean as you can remember when people had pride in their possessions and homes

Room Tip: We had the upstairs room with the nice window and a window in the bathroom. I believe it was Jacobs...

If you want to enjoy Julian, be within walking distance of everything and get a real historic feel for the town, this is a perfect place to stay - just don't expect the accommodations to be modern or roomy. Like other reviewers we were given our choice of 2 rooms upon our arrival. Tiny, tiny, upstairs rooms that we could choose from with beds pushed up against the wall to make enough room to walk. Normally, in a large city with lots of night life it wouldn't matter if the rooms are tiny, but here in Julian at 9:00 p.m. the streets are rolled up and there isn't much else to do at 9:00 - no TVs in the rooms or in any common area, very thin walls, no room for chairs to sit in the room, and no common gathering area after 9:00 for you to sit/have wine, etc. with your friends. We sat outside on the porch with our wine which was pleasant and nice but couldn't move the chairs for the 4 of us friends to all sit together because they have the outside chairs chained to the walls! The weeknight rate was a bargain, the bed was perfectly comfortable, and the breakfast and tea hour were both great, but next time I'll opt to spend a bit more and enjoy a more luxury accommodation at Wikiup, Orchard Hill or the Artist's Loft that lends itself to a little more comfort and some nice areas for mingling with friends past 9:00 p.m. since we came up with another couple and wanted to be able to socialize.

We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. However sad to hear somethings were not to your liking. Yes. the rooms on the second floor are quaint. They are part of the original structure of the hotel. Some rooms on the second floor do offer access on both sides of the bed. We can always set one of those aside for you. Also rooms on the first floor and cottages are larger. The hotel has a lot of wonderful history and we try to keep true to the times however understand some modern day conveniences are desired. Although the rooms do not have TV we do offer free wi-fi through out if you want to view programs or movies online. The lobby is open 24 hours with sitting areas and tables to interact with others in the late evening if you choose. We are glad to hear you took advantage of the porch to relax. For future ithe backyard of the hotel we have native stone patio areas with chairs and table also available 24 hours.
