“Butterfield B & B is a Joy”
Reviewed January 22, 2006

My husband and I stayed at the Butterfield B&B on Jan. 20-22, in the Stanza Italia Room. The room was comfy and inviting. The bed linens were extra soft and the bed was just as comfortable. I appreciated the extra touches Dawn puts into each room: body lotion and French milled soap, robes and soft towels. We came to relax and decompress from the holidays. We wish we could move in. Ed and Dawn are excellent innkeepers. Breakfast was delicious. My husband and I loved the poached pears! Ed and Dawn made us feel like we were visiting with friends.

I confess to reading the reviews regarding the room we stayed in "Stanza Italia" and while the bed LOOKS lumpy it is really quite comfortable, and this is from a person who is used to a high-end double pillow top mattress. Honestly, the bed was wonderful and the dreamy linens along with the antique quaintness of the room really made this an experience worth going back a second time. And a third!!!
The inn-keepers were charming and very hospitable, and the other guests were interesting people. We had a very lively discussion at breakfast (delicious food, by the way!) and enjoyed experiencing the other guests views of the bed and breakfast.
I would not hesitate to highly recommend this romantic getaway to all my friends and family!!!

We stayed at the Butterfield January 13-15, 2006. This was our first stay at a bed and breakfast and we had the best time. First, we arrived later than their normal check in time, and were warmly welcomed. We stayed in the Stanza Italia room, and we loved it. (Do not believe the the other review about the musty smell, it is nowhere to be found) The room was very warm and inviting and had everything that you could need. It was a very cool weekend when we were there so the fireplace was great. The owners Dawn and Ed were great, very nice and great conversation. The breakfast in the morning was delicious, my boyfriend can not stop talking about the french toast. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves Julian and wants to stay in a relaxing "home away from home" enviroment

While we had an overall better experience than the couple who posted about the Stanza Italia room, we certainly agree with some of their comments.

ESPECIALLY ON THAT MATTRESS.

I have not had a harder night's sleep in a hotel in my life. While that old bed looks pretty, you can see the massive hollow in the middle of the mattress from 10 feet away. Sleeping in it, my wife and I found ourselves rolling into the sunken center and knocking into each other all night long - in order to physically stay balanced and keep from rolling inward in that collapsed old mattress, we had to buttress ourselves with the largest pillows provided.

I like the antique bed, but antique mattresses are for the birds.

It was a rough night without a lot of good sleep - even though as the other post stated the location of the Butterfield is wonderfully remote and quiet outside of town.

I felt the room was clean, but it does look much more impressive on the website than it actually is. (Chalk that up to good marketing!)

We had no issues with breakfast, outside of maybe the serving sizes were a bit small.

The owner's themselves were wonderfully friendly and engaging - also helpful in pointing out the things to do in and out of town.

We enjoyed our stay in Julian. It's a beautiful quiet getaway for a day or two. It's kind of quaint and nice that it's NOT built up and over-touristy. It's true that all the hotels seem expensive for what you get. It's not Palm Springs luxury, but you pay that price. The Butterfield, I believe was actually one of the more affordable places at $150 - $180 a night...at least of the few hotels/B&B's that would even allow a one-night stay.

I just hope our money and the other Stanza Italia couple's money gets invested in a new mattress!

As they say, I'll cut to the chase...a new mattress is on order for Stanza Italia and due by the time my posting is published. I appreciate this review, especially the variety of positive opinions about us and Julian. Thank you!

A side note...all of the other beds in Butterfield and Black Oak Cabin have been replaced in the past couple of years, and one of the newest beds has been noted as being "too hard" and "too soft" in the same week!

We strive to offer the best "bed" and "breakfast" everyday. If a guest is unhappy with anything at Butterfield, we take that input to heart and hope to have another chance to provide a pleasant and comfortable stay. Come and see us, and try the new bed in our second most popular room, Stanza Italia.

We were looking forward to our stay at Butterfield, based on other reviews and the relatively high price, however we were greatly dissapointed. Overall, the location was quaint and quiet. The hosts were friendly and laid-back upon our check-in and throughout our stay.

Now for some constructive criticism..the Stanza Italia room was dated, musty, and in need of a deep cleaning. The bed was uncomfortable with a visable sunken pattern in the middle and needed a good flip or replacement. We found the video selection comprehensive but the TV was fuzzy. The next morning we found the breakfast to be decent, but they didn't even serve a couple eggs..hey, for $180plus/night one should have some choices. Lastly, the main common area had a musty smell that didn't quite sit right. To sum it up, the reality didn't match the impression given online or in the other reviews.

We'd recommed staying at a cheaper hotel elsewhere b/c you'll get about the same comfort and amenities. If possible, ditch the overnight stay and just spend the day in Julian and do the Volcan hike or one of the other short ones...Also, don't get your hopes up on the cuisine but enjoy a bite of apple pie. That is about all you need based on the 1/4mile tourist trap. Stay down in San Diego or San Juan Cap and make it a day trip instead. Come to think about it, we should've camped!

Nonetheless, we had a relaxing and peaceful visit, but wish we had more positive things to say about Butterfield and Julian.

Constructive criticism has always been welcomed throughout my life. As the owners and operators since 1999 of Butterfield, Dawn and I always thank guests when they provide input on issues, problems, and improvements. A Bed and Breakfast, as any business, must continually improve and listen to the thoughts and needs of our guests.

By the way, the "tourist trap" comment was unnecessary; people love the quaint ways of smalltown Julian, its shops, restaurants, and friendly atmosphere. Not everyone's cup of tea, but the slam was unwarranted!

This particular guest shared with us in the in-room comments card the issue with the bed and the low TV volume, and complemented us on the video library and bathroom design/amenities. We are mystified about the "musty smell", we and our guests all that week did not detect it at all.

The remark about the "dated" look of Stanza Italia is harsh, as it was completely remodeled in the past 2 years. The decor and style of the room is not to everyone's liking, but "dated" it is not.

Our breakfast service is consistently given high marks. At the time of reservation, we ask about food preferences, allergies, medical issues, to ensure a contented meal. In fact, we do provide a special meal as requested, we just need to know in advance. That morning, our 2 course breakfast was enjoyed and complemented by nearly all of the 10 guests around the table.

Our pricing is in the range of comparable inns of the area, and has never been an issue. In fact, occupancy and repeat guests and referrals all bear this out.

B&B's are all unique and represent the heart and soul of the owners. We were not able to meet the expectations of this traveler, but we expect others will be as highly appreciative of Butterfield as were the guests who stayed in that same room before and after this reviewer.

Take a moment to scan previous reviews for other viewpoints. I wish we could have another opportunity to please this unhappy reviewer, but reality says not everyone will be happy with our establishment. We will continue striving to provide a wonderful experience for all who visit Butterfield!

What a great time we had staying at this cozy B&B.
The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated.
The hosts were very friendly and the breakfast was enjoyable.
(The only thing we missed was some bread)
The grounds were well maintained and offered many ways to relax.
We will definitely stay there again and can recommend it to anyone.

Just spent a weekday getaway trip to Julian during apple season. Found the Butterfield Bed & Breakfast to be a very charming and comfortable place to stay in the mountains of San Diego's back country. Just outside of Julian's business district the Butterfield provides a true feeling of being up in the mountains. Surrounded by trees, with a great hilltop view the property offers walking trails and sitting locations to take it all in!

Rooms are well themed and nicely appointed. The innkeepers, Dawn & Ed, add to the charm of facility and they make a wonderful gourmet breakfast! One would not be disappointed by by staying at this comfortably warm B & B.
