My wife and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at the Butterfield Bed & Breakfast. It was a wonderful relaxing weekend retreat. The breakfast was world class and I enjoyed the ginger cookies so much I got the recipe.

Initially, we didn't know what to expect since we rarely patronize Bed & Breakfast; typically, we stay at modern hotels since we usually visit cosmopolitan cities instead. However, the Butterfield B&B surpassed our expectation in every way! We're so glad that we found this wonderful B&B.

First of all, the innkeepers, Ed and Dawn, are a "class act," and they provide excellent accommodations for their guests. For instance, our room (Country Corner) had EVERY possible amenities, ranging from spa robes to a coffee maker with extras; there was even a makeup remover and umbrella. LOL

Furthermore, Dawn is a superb cook, and her brownies (afternoon tea) are so moist and delicious, and her artichoke quiche (breakfast) were scrumptious, which were paired with savory sausages. Also, it was delightful how beverages and snacks, such as iced tea and popcorn, were available to guests at all times.

Finally, Ed and Dawn were very hospitable, warm, and helpful, as well as being excellent conversationalist. In addition, the acres of property that surrounds this B&B is very scenic and tranquil. Overall, we absolutely fell in love B&B; however, it is "Ed & Dawn" who makes this Butterfield Bed & Breakfast a fabulous getaway! Thank you Ed and Dawn! :D

My hubby surprised me with a trip to Julian this past weekend. We were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and he couldn't have picked a better place! The bed and breakfast is nestled amongst the most beautiful and peaceful grounds. The room was very clean, cozy and inviting. The food was delicious and Dawn and Ed were very gracious and welcoming, treating us like family. We had a very relaxing weekend. I can hardly wait to go back!

This was our third stay at Butterfield B&B and we’ll be back! By now it feels like coming home when we stay there. Ed & Dawn are genuine, friendly and accommodating hosts, the rooms are cozy, clean and comfortable, the food delicious.

My husband & I recently stayed 6 nights because we had business in Julian, but stayed longer than the business required so we could also do "touristy" things in & around San Diego County. All the good & positive remarks made about this place by previous guests ring very true. Dawn & Ed are excellent hosts, and Dawn works miracles in the kitchen with her phenomenal breakfasts garnished with herbs snipped fresh from her garden which is just outside the kitchen door. There's an extensive DVD library in the common room for those days/nights when the weather is too bad to be outside. The rooms are true to photos posted by others. We stayed in the Stanza Italia, a suite with just the amount of space we needed for 6 days. The fireplace is a wonderful touch & the bed extremely comfortable. Whenever we burned the starter log at night, the next day there was a new one for that night. The value for your money goes a very long way here, and morning walks yield an abundance of chirping, welcoming & tame wildlife, even the wild turkeys just a 1/2 block down the road! When we return to Julian on subsequent business, we will definitely stay here because the value we got for our money went a very long way. (We've had 2 previous stays at Orchard Hill Country when their prices were lower, and we believe Butterfield to be the much better value for the money, as well as having genuinely friendly & accommodating hosts and unpretentious guests.) When it's time to return to Julian, we will stay here again.

Butterfield Bed and Breakfast is a homey, welcoming Bed and Breakfast on a hillside overlooking Julian, at the end of some winding roads and nestled among trees. The rooms are character-themed and the decor is generally very folksy-Americana. We hit it off really well with some other guests as we enjoyed the firelit common room well stocked with games, videos, an apparently endless stash of home-made brownies, and even a piano and guitar at the guest's disposal. The hostess is friendly but professional, and seemed to enjoy joining us all at breakfast to chat with us. She needs little prompting to talk about Julian and its small-town ways. Speaking of breakfast, it was incredibly rich and opulent; the hostess puts a lot of care into the recipes, and the portions are so generous that I didn't get hungry again until dinner.

Overall, our visit felt like a visit to family; as with most of the better bed-and-breakfasts, a stay here is a social affair...you can keep to yourself, but you're missing some of the experience if you do.
