The Strawberry Hill Cabin is not just a cabin; it is an experience. The minute we entered the cabin, the sound of soft classical music set the tone for the next two days. We had breakfast with a mama deer and her two young ones, we listened to woodpeckers as we drifted off for a nap during the early afternoon, and we were stopped on the road by wild turkeys! I've never seen a wild trukey in my life. In the span of two day we counted 20! This cabin and all the charm it brings was one of the best vacations I ever had.

I highly recommed it if you are looking for a secluded place to hide out. And if you want variety, you can take a short trip into town and get dinner or pie. Oh, there are places to go hiking for the easy-going hiker (like me).

There are places, and then special places, and then there are places like Big Cat Cabin.

It's a meticulously restored 1920's California cabin set on one of those rare view-rich ridges so hard for most of us to afford in the modern world, with an original stone fireplace large enough to roast a pig, and enough windows to make any modern energy conserving fanatic blanch. The long, slow, late-afternoon sunrays that flow straight through the cabin from a sun setting over the distant Pacific Ocean ought to be enough to inspire repeated visits. But then there are the views, from the sweetness of a lightening dawn with the rustling of deer and wild turkeys, to the long sunny days, to the impossibly lingering sunsets, to the Milky Way in the crystal midnight air. Oh, and no noticeable neighbors...

Then, too, there is the design sense of the two artists who restored this space - it's a space of warmth and clarity at once; spacious, comfortable and clean in the way classic simplicity is clean. Then there is the full kitchen with the vintage stove, and a pantry, and a wooded bath, and a windowed corner with a writing desk, and books, and even a stereo system...and... It's almost too much, to have all this and then a bit of favorite Bach quietly complementing that space. It's just what some of us are looking for. We've been there many times, and plan many more.

Artists’ Loft Bed and Breakfast is three cabins in the trees and hills near Julian California, though the word ‘cabin’ seems far too modest a term for these. The views are long and the area quiet. The newest and also largest, the Artists’ Loft, is about 1800 square feet with a beamed cathedral ceiling in the living area. It has two bedrooms and all facilities for extended stays, but it is also wonderful for a weekend, like the one I spent there a few days ago. The Cabin at Strawberry Hill and Big Cat Cabin are, like the Artists’ Loft, beautifully appointed in country elegance with the artistic sensitivity of the owners; both artists. I have stayed in all the cabins over the last few years. Each unique; all have been great places for me to let down my urban guard and settle into a natural rhythm for a bit. I think of it as ‘resetting’. If you’re looking to relax your mind and stretch your imagination, I totally recommend any one of these gorgeous, comfortable, and peaceful ‘cabins’.
