Butterfield Ranch Resort
Ranked #8 of 13 Specialty Lodging in Julian

If you are looking for a convenient, friendly place to camp with your horse, Butterfield Ranch Resort is the place for you. The facilities are very nice, with everything from dry tent camping, to full hookup rv sites, nicely appointed cabins and even mobile homes for rent. The staff is very friendly, and the place is very well maintained, from the general store, to the clubhouse and 3 swimming pools. The horse corrals are directly across the street from the entrance to the park. We went there over the Thanksgiving weekend this year, and had a wonderful time. The weather on Friday thru Sunday was mid-to-high 70's every day. There are trails for riding or hiking on both sides of the road (County hiway S-2). The climate makes this an excellent place to stay and ride during the winter months. The park is a short way south on S-2 from the intersection of S-2, Hwy 78 and hwy 79, known as scissors crossing. The riding is exceptional, with well-defined trails that seem to go on forever. On the weekend we were there, there was a bar-b-que chuckwagon that came in to cook meals for those of us who were not inclined to cook ourselves, and their food was excellent. On Saturday night there was even live music. That was about the last thing we expected to find in the middle of the desert. Everyone at the park was very friendly and truly treated us like family. We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay, and are planning to go back at least one or two more weekends this winter, and into the spring. It's probably a little hot for a summer trip, although being at the northern end of S-2 it should be a little cooler when compared with Agua Caliente springs or Borrego. My wife and I recommend this as a very horse and camper-friendly place that is easily accessible from San Diego, Orange or Riverside counties.

We went out with a group of friends over Thanksgiving and had a great time. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, the showers and restrooms were maintained properly. They offered entertainment in the evenings, movies or an entertainer, during the day a guided walk to a nearby point of interest. Butterfield is a nice place to get away to.

We were looking for a close inexpensive family getaway for the Thanksgiving weekend (we live in the north San Diego area). The price was reasonable and they allowed dogs which is always important for us since we own two dogs and like to take them with us. Yes, it is an RV park, and yes they are close together with little between the sites, but there were hook-ups, picnic tables, fire rings and the area was so large, that it didn't bother us too much. They have laundry, flush toilets, and showers. Are they brand new and sparkling clean? No, but not bad considering they have been around since the 50's, I believe. There was always toilet paper, hand-soap, and paper hand towels in the bathrooms. You could tell that they were on top of this. They have a playground, basketball courts, and pools. One was heated for the enjoyment of the guests. There is also a jacuzzi with several powerful jets.

What impressed me the most about this place is that the people (employees) were so nice. You could tell that they were really going out of their way to make a positive environment. We may have experienced an unusual weekend schedule, being that it was Thanksgiving and all, but here is what we did.

Friday night they had Cowboy Jack as the entertainer. He is from Vista, California and did a great show (2 solid hours) by the pool. The camp managers handed out glow sticks to all the kids, and had several warm bonfires to sit around, while listening to the music. They even had marshmallows and my children roasted some. A few people danced and it was a genuinely nice evening. After all, there isn't a whole lot of stuff to do in the desert. The next couple of days, they had a giant bar-b-que. Starting at $5.00 you could get a plate of grilled food. We didn't do this, but I saw some plates as I was walking by and the food looked great. This bar-b-que option was offered for dinner and breakfast.

The second evening, they showed a video (Kung Fu Panda) in their nice formal sitting room. They supplied free bags of popcorn to all those who watched the movie. They even checked in with us halfway through the movie to see if we needed more popcorn. Really nice, and my kids (ages 10 and 13) loved it!
After the movie, we had just about enough time to eat dinner back at our trailer before heading out to the basketball courts. The managers had arranged for someone to come out from SDAA (San Diego Astronomers Association). The man brought a wealth of information to go along with his large industrial-like telescope that everyone could look through. My son talked with the man for hours about galaxies, stars, moons, and the such. AND, there were glowsticks given to all the kids again!

We have a pop-up trailer and went on the side with the rvs so we could take advantage of the hook-ups, but there is a section for tents, and they also have little cabin-like rooms for rent.

With the mud caves, wind caves, and unlimited off-roading nearby, there is plenty to keep you busy. The weather was perfect. We plan to come back again. Perhaps during the months where all the dessert plants are in full bloom.

Kudos to the managers for their efforts! They were much appreciated by our family!

This place is so not what is advertised on the website. They call this place an RV Resort HA! That is laughable. The lady who runs the place Sheila is very, very nice. But the "amenities" she mentioned were non-existent. She told me it was a "family-oriented" place. Umm, there is nothing to do there. This place is located on one big GIGANTIC ant hill!!! The playground? Umm, let's just say they haven't done anything to it since the 70's, I'm seriously not kidding about that. The three SPARKLING pools as they advertise were pathetic. The pool we were located by was freezing! The other pool I saw was covered up, so we couldn't try it. We asked to use the spa and the response was,"Do you really have to? It costs us $100 to run it." We said, "Yes, we would like to enjoy your "amenities" you mentioned on your website." Okay so we go and guess what? We catch the "hired help" getting it on in the spa!!! Yes people we had our kids with us!!! I can say however the group of about 10 men who rented one of the cedar cabins across from us seemed to have a nice time, but they were there for 4xing so if you don't have kids and rent a cabin it maybe okay for you. If you are looking for a family camping resort, this is not the place. I was glad to get out of there! We just went last weekend (10/17-10/19). Oh yeah and don't believe the "renovation" claims on the website, I seriously couldn't tell anything was done, the bathrooms were gross, the pool was subpar as was the spa and the playground was horrible! FALSE ADVERTISING!!

Most all the guests we have had out here love it, no kidding, they come back time after time. I'm sorry you didn't have a good time here at the ranch. I would have rather given your money back then to have you so disappointed.

Unless you are familiar with the weather in that area, do not take the word of management. They lied to us! 15 to 25 mph winds were considered "breezy" to them! I saw them lie on the phone to a potential patron as well. Memorial weekend had horrible weather, which I know is not the fault of the resort, however do not lie in order to get people to go. The winds were absolutely horrible and we had to cut our trip short. The pool was not heated as was advertised either!
