Stayed here for a brief mini-honeymoon, and we were both extremely happy with the choice. Our suite (#5) had a careful, personal feel throughout, including a (fully functional!) antique record player and an Eames chair in the bedroom. My only regret is that we were in and out quickly, it would be a lovely place to spend a whole quiet day, if only there wasn't a Seussian wonderland of a National Park 10 minutes away.

The architecture has an industrial and Modern vibe that is nonetheless quite homey feeling and perfectly in tune with the surrounding desert and the feel of the city. Its right off of the main road but nonetheless feels safe and secluded.

Its worth noting that the setup is somewhat geared towards encouraging you to meet or at least spend time near your neighbors. There is a lot of charming communal space. Suite 5 also has a lightly voyeuristic layout -- no shades in the living room, and an outdoor shower that is mostly but perhaps not entirely obscured from the common patio. It all feels right for the space and community, but someone seeking to feel utterly alone and away from other people might not be well served.

We were sad to leave so soon and would love to return

Mojave Sands is our FAVORITE place to stay when we come to Joshua Tree. The perfect mixture f privacy and relaxation. Do yourself a favor and spend the little extra cash for the suite. It comes with a FULL kitchen and the bathroom is AMAZING. Thank you Susan for always making our stay at Mojave Sands INCREDIBLE. The hotel is also super close to the park which is a major plus!

“Colors explode, sharp shadows – a black window shattered by the desert sun, jagged blacks, jittering whites and yellows, greens.” Robert Cabot The Joshua Tree 1970

It is fair to say that we felt a level of trepidation driving down 29 Palms Highway and knowing that our destination was a Palms Highway address – the architectural style of the Johsua Tree township isn’t the most inspiring.

But turning into the Sands was a singularly pleasant surprise. The design is quirky – lots of steel in a bricolage style – but it works wonderfully, thoroughly in keeping with its environment. Inside, the unit is fitted out to the highest standard – spacious, cool and relaxing. Unit 5 is the biggest and has an outside shower which is delightful, and you can watch the sunrise from the shower (see photo below) – (the vertically challenged (less than 6’ 3”) may need to stand on a box). The Sands is a great base for exploring the area, and if hiking the National Park is not your thing, it is a great place to just sit and watch the sky.

This is our new favorite place to stay. Very relaxing, beautiful decor, cozy room, awesome commom area, very clean, very accommodating. And, the best smelling soap and shampoo. Very easy access to the park and food and stores are within 2 minute drive. Private parking lot. If we ever make it back to Joshua Tree, we will be staying here.

We were very impressed by all the work that went into restoring this old style road-side hotel. Endless iron work and countless details were added to make this location truly a unique stay. The fully enclosed parking and courtyard area made it feel as though we were in our own private compound. My only complaint was the piercing whirl that came from the units heat pump. Luckily it wasn't too cold and we were able to turn it off for the night, otherwise it would be unbearable. Seems like an easy fix though and you should find this place up be as enjoyable as we did.
