“A Train Workshop and Roundhouse that is still in Motion”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

We toured Northern California with a focus on natural landmarks and of course, the history of the gold rush became an important theme. The Railtown 1897 State Historic Park was a great place to end our visit as it's history ties in with the end of the Gold Rush ...too late to keep the placer mines stocked with wood. The work shop has every tool, equipment and train parts imaginable. We even got to watch and hear about work being done on an engine. Many movies have been filmed using some of these trains. It was an enjoyable tour and browsing through the buildings and trains was fun.

“Great display of History!”

The "Railtown Park" is a great place to teach young ones about trains! A fun day spent climbing on old engines, peering into the past and learning unique histories about some of the trains utilized in our nations "early years"

“Railtown Historic Park”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

We stopped to see the historic park. There are some old steam engines in a roundhouse that appear to be under repair. The tour is limited for safety. Some old passenger cars are on a siding adjacent to the visitor center novelty and book store. The tour staff is small.
Don't arrive close to closing as you will be disappointed. Staff leaves promptly on time and you will be charged full fair to look in the roundhouse, even when a guide is not available.

“Lovely train ride, but the highlight is the Roundhouse Tour”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

First, if you're looking to visit Railtown, be sure to first check the website (better yet, call) to find out the train ride schedules, as even during the peak summer months, trains do NOT operate daily.

We came here during the week, and visited on a Wednesday when train rides with an old Diesel locomotive are offered. The fare is very reasonable, and the 45-minute ride was quite enjoyable for us and the kids (4 and 7 year olds). Throughout the ride, the volunteer conductors told stories about the history of the railroad. You can even buy fresh popped popcorn at the station (only 25 cents for a small bag!) and bring onboard the train, nice!

The best part of visiting Railtown, for us, is the Roundhouse Tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable, patient, and really good with kids. We got to walk leisurely through one of only two continuously operating Roundhouses in the country since the steam days, while learning about the history of each of Railtown's treasured locomotives. If you have a railfan in your family, you must take this tour. If you want to learn the history of the Gold Rush, you must take this tour. Do not miss it when you come to Railtown.
