La Quinta Inn & Suites Irvine Spectrum
Ranked #15 of 22 Hotels in Irvine
Reviewed August 9, 2012

We have stayed in LaQuinta Hotels and none were like the nightmare we experienced. I am disabled, have a service dog and asked for a room on the ground floor close to the front desk. We gave our credit card to insure our room in the "NEW" section and I was told by the front desk "no problem". We had traveled 14 hrs, got there about 9 pm and the front desk said they could not guarantee a room in the front building. We were put in the silo. All concrete walls, which makes you feel like you are in prison. No amenities. The shower did not have a lip and the water ran all over the bathroom floor. The air conditioner blows directly on you in front of your bed...ended up with a sore throat.

The train was very close, a swimming pool away and went by every 2-3 hrs. We did get a ground floor room. The breakfast area did not have air conditioning. Was unattended and with so many people...it was a constant mess, along with the stuffiness. This seemed to be a good place for families who wanted to let their kids go without supervision in the breakfast room.

We did our home work and that is why request was for the new section. Beware, as they do not hold your room. The room price was HIGHER PRICED. We are used to staying at all the Marriott Courtyards for $40.00 less! The Mariott's have granite throughout & upgraded room. A real dining breakfast and service. We spend 3 disappointing days at LaQuinta and will NEVER go back nor recommend. I should have paid attention to the review of 10 mos. ago that also had same experience & left in 15 minutes.. Thought management changed.
Before retirement, I traveled in my job. In 30 years, I never had an experience as I had with this hotel.

Room Tip: We cannot recommend this hotel.

We stayed here 2 nights and were previously warned about the train being close. Even though it was close we did not mind. The breakfast could have been better BUT it was such a neat hotel. We loved to look at the pictures of the history of the hotel and thought our room was FANTASTIC. We had such a great stay

I have had better breakfast in anothers La Quinta; here it just was milk, cereal and waffles.
We were in a third floor no elevator. The restaurant area was in construction, and some metal walls were with rusty appearance. The A/C was dripping over the carpet.
Good housekeeping.

I pity the reviewer who didn't do his homework on this hotel. Knowing what to expect, my family found it unusual and charming. We were interested in the history and appreciated the historical photos on the walls.

The good: Our hexagonal room was big enough for three of us to move about freely, and we appreciated the 3 beds (two doubles and a sofa sleeper). The sink was separate from the tub/shower/toilet, and there were 5 lamps to brighten the room. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty, and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful (especially David). Our concrete walls, far from feeling prison-like, provided a quiet, cool atmosphere. The flat-screen TV had many cable channels, and there is plenty of free parking.

The not-so-good: Despite the kindly concern of the front desk, it took a long time to get issues resolved. The first was a sagging shower curtain which prevented me from showering for the 2 hours it took someone to fix it. The second was a request for pool towels, which wasn't filled for more than an hour (there was a hamper for "pool towels" but no supply of towels). The third was a request for a third towel in our room (after 3 of us had stayed there for 3 nights), which wasn't filled despite a member of the housekeeping staff out in the hall (I finally just asked her for another towel). The sofa sleeper was in terrible shape with a bad slant and uncomfortable springs in the mattress.

I would stay here again (and hopefully the construction would be done next time), but only if it were just 2 of us and a king bed.

Room Tip: Don't be put off by gray exterior - definitely ask for a "suite" in the silo on the pa...

We have stayed here several times and always had immaculate room and great service. This time, the room had a towel by the sink, soap in the sink, and trash in the trash can. The rest of the room has obviously been cleaned and the beds made with clean linens. We were tired so reported to the desk when we checked out. They were concerned and wrote down the issue telling us that they would talk to the person involved. We were satisfied.

I have stayed in this hotel a few times, the room I had this time in the "barn" building was great. The rooms in the reception building seem more "tired". The downside was it did back to the railroad tracks, not a big deal for me as I sleep with earplugs anyway, but I think it will drive some people crazy.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the free breakfast is quite acceptable, but if you want more there is a Dennys right next door.
Overall recommended, cheap (for OC) clean accomodation. Keep in mind, that it does get busy sometimes, and if you want to extend your stay (as we did) you can be out of luck.
