“Almost a disaster”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014

It came highly recommended for the food and there are not many good choices in Invernes, so my husband and I chose to have a dinner there during our President Day?Valentine Day getaway. What went wrong? let me count the ways. We called in advance to make a reservation but found out that no reservations are taken for groups smaller than 6. A very pleasant voice (Luc?) suggested that considering the special weekend we should come early and they would take care of us, no problem. We came at 6 pm (never dine so early, but we REALLY wanted to make sure we do not have to wait too long. There was only one pair ahead of us so it appeared that we were OK. had to wait outside, though, because the place is VERY small. It was cold and it was long. The tables seemed to be clearing, people leaving, but nobody called us in. 40 min later, when finally it was our turn, we were called in and seated at the counter. When we asked about two tables that stayed vacant, we were told that those were saved until a third table is vacant, and then they would be moved together for a party of six. In fact, three parties of 6 and more had tables, most of everybody else had to dine at the bar - and that's on a Valentine Day weekend when most people are COUPLES who came for ROMANTIC dinner! If we were told that BEFORE we waited 40 minutes in the cold, we would have made a different choice. (We are not very young and do not enjoy people reaching out for their bears over our dinner plates and that's exactly what happened.) The person behind the bar was arrogant and not in a hurry to take our order. Our neighbors to the left, a young couple, who waited in the cold even longer, finally got enough of him (they actually thought that the guy was tipsy, but we thought he was just full of himself) - they got up and left without having their dinner. We stayed through and finally got our food; it was mixed. Fungi oysters were delicious; the yellow tail entree was interesting and a reasonable size portion; but the crab stuffed sole was boring, mushy, tasteless and colorless. It was almost good that the portion was very small. We decided to have a piece of cake for dessert, but at that time free ice cream has arrived - "to smooth things out". We looked around and saw that the barmen was busy serving this free ice cream to other couple at the bar, evidently they needed some "smoothing out" too (they confirmed it later back in the hotel). We patiently consumed the not-so-wonderful ice cream (you get what you pay for, I guess) and left very puzzled. The place seemed promising, we read many good things about the food there. Perhaps, it has some identity problem: it is too small for a bar & restaurant combination and should chose one or another. And if you cannot accommodate customers with a table, just tell them in advance. And the last but not least, a dollop of mediocre ice cream does not make up for rude attitude, the person behind the bar that night needs some manners polishing to do. Oh yes, could the problem be that the owner (Luc) was not there that night?

Great staff and the most interesting, fun and delicious meal we have had in a while. Outstanding oysters of course. Very busy, no reservations for parties under 6.

“good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

Small restaurant with small menu but good. Service as very good. The room echoed which bothered my husband's hearing aids, we were unable to converse. I had mussels and my husband had chicken. Both we would recommend.

“A Warm Welcome at an Inverness Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

We are delighted with this addition to the Point Reyes foodie scene. We have eaten there both summer and winter. The fish was excellent as well as the soups. We have tried to resist the desserts but their chef's excellent offerings are too good to resist. The restaurant can been crowded and there is often a wait. We were welcomed and a spot at the bar was created while we waited and tried their wine served from a spigot. Fresh from the barrel.

“One of the best meals I've ever had in a restaurant”

Seriously delicious. It's a lovely little restaurant. We sat at the bar and enjoyed oyster after oyster. I'd recommend stopping by Blackbird next door for a coffee.
