This is our second time at Franks Place and it was well worth the return visit in spite of a couple of negatives.
We brought a group of 8 this time with the incentive that when in Palm Springs, one should experience the old time Palm Springs vibe. And what better place to do that but in the old Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez Indian Wells Hotel.
Even though it was the Sunday BEFORE the US Thanksgiving, the Xmas twinkle lights and Xmas trees were up. The fireplace was lit, mantle decorated and the ambience was perfect.
We made reservations a week before and were immediately sat at a large table with perfect view of Ted Herman big band and easy access to dance floor. But, the big band was so LOUD that conversation was impossible with anyone other than the person next to you. Also, it appeared the band may have had some new members? As a few times they had to restart the numbers due to miscues and errors.
Last year when we went on a Sunday evening in Dec, Frank DiSalvo sang for most of the 6-8 pm Sunday evening show. This visit however, altho he was in the lounge visiting and shaking hands with some guests, he only sang for 20 mins in the second set from about 730 - 750. The rest of the time, it was just the band playing or one of the two " guest singers" ...An older fellow and a woman. Both were quite good but lacked Frank's showmanship. The evening is advertised as "Ted Herman Big Band with Frank DiSalvo." ..no mention of other singers.
I was well aware of the $10 entertainment cover charge and had no problem with that BUT thought it would be for entertainment provided by Frank and the band...not The Band, two guests and a only 20 min set by Frank...a bit misleading IMHO.
Foodwise, I enjoyed my Frank's Pasta and the $32 bottle of Calif cab was good however once the server opened it and poured the first glass, he never returned to refill the glasses...and I waited plenty long with an empty glass to give him a chance as he was busy..maybe they need more servers.
A bus boy cleared our finished plates when two in our group were not finished...maybe I'm old school but I was taught to wait until all were finished before clearing dishes.
We will be back but likely not for dinner..instead will try Happy Hour on a Fri or Sat evening when Frank is advertised as the entertainment 600 -930 so we should have a better chance of getting more than 20 mins from him.
