“Coffee in Idyllwild and in the Center of Town”
Review of Higher Grounds

We've been to Higher Grounds quite a few times over the last few years. They're easy to find with plenty of parking. It's right in the center of the main part of Idyllwild. The coffee is good...not fabulous, but good. They have seating inside and out. The inside areas are usually full but we've almost always found a place to sit outside. That's enjoyable to watch people walking around town and nature but cigarette smoke does waft through from time to time from other guests. I tried to order a cold drink the last time I was there but they were out of several choices. I ended up getting iced, black tea but it was not good and it was cloudy (weird)...I won't order that again. But, I will probably go back for coffee again. Although, I did notice this last time that there are some more coffee shop choices up there now to try.

This place is great! I have ordered a non-fat, cafe mocha and it was delicious. They have several tables indoor and a small patio where patrons can enjoy a beverage and apparently are also allowed to smoke - this feature I didn't like though since I hate the smell of cigarette, especially in the morning!
I ordered a blueberry muffin and it was very good.
The young woman at the counter is very nice and extremely efficient, especially with her multitasking skills when several customers are in line at the cash register.
The place is clean, they have toys kids can play with while parents are enjoying their morning treats, they have books you can borrow while enjoy your mocha!
Great place to start your day!

Ordered the strawberry/banana smoothie. It was average which is good. Also ordered iced tea, very strong but tasty. Sat on the deck and enjoyed the breeze. Paid about the same as most coffee shops. Location across from the beer garden is nice so you can hear the music.

This cute coffee shop in Idyllwild is just like the town itself...unique and artsy! The coffee is delicious, and they also have muffins, etc. that are quite tasty. I absolutely loved the vibe of this place...artists chatting, tourists relaxing, hippie-types enjoying their surroundings. It's a nice spot to sit and enjoy some good coffee, while taking in your surroundings.

Idyllwild is, in part, a community in which fine artists, writers and others in the arts are active and interactive. Evidently, more than a few denizens among that arts subculture are driven by some mystical creative force to hang out at Higher Grounds, where one senses a touch of zealotry and, maybe, just a hint of pretense.
The coffee (actual coffee, mind you, not something laced with steamed, frothed, flavored and flashy additions) is fair. There is a selection of muffins which, truth be told, look pretty grim but are in fact quite tasty, or at least the blueberry version was.
But the scene is worth the visit: Artists communing, writers hammering away on lap tops, much conversation about the struggles and agonies of being an artist and all of it right out there in the open so everybody -- everybody! -- knows there are SERIOUS artists in the room.
Higher Ground pretension aside, the arts do in fact thrive in Idyllwild, a rich tradition worthy of celebration. If you want to experience one slightly overwrought slice of that tradition, drop in here -- just bring a sense of humor. . .
