Staying in Palm Desert for the week and went to Idyllwild for the day. This restaurant was recommended in the Fodor's Guide as the restaurant in town. Stopped in for a quick lunch but the our food took forever to order and even longer to come out, so it was anything but quick. Food was good, not great. My plate was dirty since it was set on the patio table before we were seated. Overall I probably would not recommend this place given the number of restaurants in town.

The smokey smell outside the restaurant drew us in as did the reviews on TripAdivsor. We absolutely loved the French Onion Soup! The pasta dish our table ordered was the Garlic Shrimp and Scallops and it was cooked to perfection. A petite filet was ordered and it was average for the red meat dish. The ginger halibut was chosen for the seafood dish and it was disappointingly sweet, not what was described. The last dish was their Chicken Diablo, it was finished in a beef broth and Madeira wine, though it did have spice it was a Chinese flavor to it and it was swimming in the bowl. If we were to go back we would stick with the French Onion Soup, salad and perhaps a pasta dish. To be fair, we did not try any deserts but they looked fabulous.

We were 2 couples vacationing in Palm Desert and we decided to drive up into the mountains. It was 80 degrees when we left Palm Desert and it was 41 degrees and rainy in Idyllwild which is an hour north and about 5,000 feet altitude. We toured a little and decided on lunch and a lady recommended Gastrognome. it was cozy and the food just outstanding. We started out with soup and 2 of us had wonderfully delicious onion soup, my husband had the southwestern potato soup that was a bit spicy and he loved it. We then had sandwiches and salads and everyone was pleased with their choices. We had hot tea and dessert and I personally had the banana foster cup. It was homemade and absolutely wonderful. It was a toasted hazelnut cup probably made with ground nuts, egg white, sugar and butter(my guess) and it was filled with bananas foster and topped with top quality ice cream and dribbled with chocolate sauce. It was unusual and truly heavenly. There was a full service bar, but it was quiet since it was lunch, and we ate in the lovely dining room with stained glass and a fireplace and cloth napkins.

We were really excited about eating here, since it looked pretty upscale for the area. The meals we ordered came out pretty plain. They weren't bad, just not very interesting and really lacking in flavor. The French Onion soup was pretty good, however.

We had a really hard time ever getting the attention of our waitress. When we were seated we had to wait forever to get our drink order, then another long wait until we could put in our food order, and then it seemed like the meals would never come. Getting our check and then getting someone to come back and actually run our credit card was another painfully long wait.

Overall we really didn't like our experience here. It was too expensive for the experience and we definitely felt cheated on what was supposed to be our "nice night out." We love Idyllwild and will definitely come back, but just not to this restaurant.

I love this place. The food is great and the homemade bread is addictive. I like bringing my dog Molly and sitting on the patio overlooking the town. Great people watching spot. Best Cheeseburgers I've ever had. Extensive menu with everything from Steak to Vegetarian choices. The service is always spot on and friendly.
