I've stayed in this hostel twice now...obviously a glutten for punishment. My first experience here was back in 2003 and I was bitten by bed bugs, the place had the stench of pee as you entered the building and the staff were really unfriendly.
I went back again in 2007 and it had made a few improvements but I'd only stay again if I were desperate. The only real redeeming factors about the place is that my boyfriend and I met some great people in our room and Hermosa is a great little beach town, with a pretty decent nightlife if that's what you're after.
The rooms have up to six beds in, each with a small bathroom which is quite good. The staff were also much friendlier than last time. The hostel does offer a free breakfast but always on a first come first served basis which is understandable. If sleep is a main priority of yours and you end up in a the rooms at the front of the building, then you won't be very happy. This is because the rooms face the main square where all the bars, clubs and restaurants are, so lots of noise is to be expected.
I love visiting the coast of LA and I love Hermosa but now I''ve resigned to paying for a private apartment as I really don't want to have to stay in this hostel again. If you are on a really tight budget, which we have been, it's an ok place to stay at best but I wouldn't stay here if it could be avoided. I've stayed in a lot of hostels and I haven't stayed in many that are this bad...either I'm really lucky or they could really do with an upgrade.
