“Do not go here!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

This is seriously the WORST hostel i've ever stayed in. The room smelled like a public bathroom, with old sheets and no closet, chair or table. The people working there were really unfriendly, except for the French lady owner. There was no decent place to sit down to meet other travellers, except a little room full of drunk kids and old dudes. By the way, there is two REALLY LOUD BARS on the first floor that makes it impossible to sleep before 02:00 AM. My advice; DON'T GO!!!

I would like to say this was an awesome hostel! I have been to many and never been to a US hostel. I would say my experience was overall positive..great staff, friendly guests. Best location you could ask for, right in the middle of the action and a few steps from the beach. Might be a little loud from the bar downstairs but in general if you are a traveler you should be able to handle it. If your looking for a European style hostel feel this is your place. I went down to long beach for business between stays and its nothing like this area!

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs if your sensitive to noise at night!

I have been at too many hostels to count over many years, and this hostel does stand out as one of the better.
Its cleaned regularly, including toilets shower which is important.
Theres quite a lot of space with two common rooms and kitchen and plenty fridge space
Close to beach
Laid back atmosphere, some of the staff live and work there, so it has a much more homely feel.
So if you just relax and blend in, the staff will be very helpful.
Beds could be better.
Yes, beds near front are over pubs, so loud. At the back they are fine, and have ocean views.
But, you can go out for the night without need for taxis as the main night area is out the front door.

Had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Surf City Hostel.
It's a 20 stride walk onto the beach and you can hire a bike and ride for miles along to Santa Monica - it's the prettiest of bike rides.
It is a hostel - so no you don't get a 5 star room and an en suite and it is right next to some relaxing, friendly bars so bring some earplugs just in case the natter stops you from nodding off - but that also means you can enjoy walking right onto the beach for surfing and then fall out of the shower in the evening to happy hour - and a friendly, welcoming crowd plus a fine selection of cuisine. The rooms were clean as were the showers, I didn't notice sand trodden through but that sounds obvious by a beach, the breakfasts were generous amounts of jams and toast and peanut butter and cereal and occasional doughnuts. And the host and staff were really welcoming.

Room Tip: If you're on the higher floor it will be quieter. I shared an en suite but the communal shower r...

The hostel is pretty much on the beach, you come out the door and the the sand and sea are steps away. There is no better location in Hermosa Beach!

I've stayed all over the world in hostels and hotels of all classes and it's true this is a very basic hostel. If you're coming to LA to explore and to enjoy the Californian lifestyle though then why on earth would you be doing any more in your accomodation than having a shower and going to sleep?!

If you're wanting to sit in a room all evening or go to bed at 9pm then go to a hotel! If you want to enjoy the great nightlife on the Pier which is just downstairs then this place cannot be beaten!

One word of advice for those driving is that there is no parking nearby unless you're willing to pay or move your car every few hours. There is some free street parking not far from the supermarket up the road about 10-15 minute walk away though which has been fine for me on all my visits since my first in 1999.

Great place, many good memories!

Room Tip: It's not a quiet hostel, but a room at the front of the building is great because you can see th...

this isn't the kind of place to stay if you are a princess as it is right on the beach so lots of sand is walked through, the showers and bathroom isn't immaculate but you can not fault the location. The french lady that runs the place is really lovely and so are the staff. It is directly above bars so perfect if you like to drink but probably not if you don't want any noise!

You will read negative reviews about Surf City Hostel and it doesn't deserve the bad reviews. Yes, this hostel is lively being that it is directly above Watermans Bar and off the Hermosa Beach Pier. If you are looking at staying at Surf City Hostel, you will have the opportunity to meet individuals from all over the world. While we stayed for a week, we had multiple roommates from England, US (Texas), US (San Diego and Kansas City, Sapain, and Australia. At breakfast we were able to meet many others. One of the guest has been there at Surf City Hostel for a few weeks was so cool to take us to the Hermosa Beach Farmers Market. If you are expecting "the Hilton" you are looking for wrong place. But if you do decide to stay at Surf City Hostel, you will make friends quickly!!!!!

Room Tip: We were in 206, and it seemed to be fairly quite. In the morning around 6 am you hear bottles goin...
