Grandview Inn
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Hermosa Beach
Reviewed January 6, 2010

Stayed about the fifth time at the Grandview Inn in 5 years. It's a lovely hotel only about 50m from "The Strand" & beach. All rooms are very clean and the reception is always welcoming. Friendly and helpful staff. It's the best hotel for your bucks. The ocean view rooms over a beautiful view down to the beach and "The Strand". The suite is newly equipped with cooker, fridge, microwave. The rooms are generally a bit outdated but that's about the only negative thing to be honest. The Grandview Inn offers you the best value in Hermosa. It's a truly great place if you want to stay on the beach but not spend a fortune.

Desk clerk had reserved us for Jan instead of Dec but she agreeably sorted it out. Both she and her son had accents that were difficult to understand so I wasn't quite sure what had happened, or what either generally said. We agreed to a price reduction and a two night stay in an oceanfront room then we would consider moving to the room with a full kitchen.
The oceanfront room was ocean view but still nice. Main complaint is that the beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable, and they used the small pillows that are also hard. The room needs a coffee maker, since the one downstairs never had coffee and something to heat food and water in in the microwave. We received notice at 1pm that we had to move right away to the other room. We easily could have been gone from the hotel for the day and then what? I asked if we could stay and the mgr said no and that if we had wanted to stay we should have asked the day before. I think more in terms of that they should have asked us if we still wanted to move before accepting a reservation for the room we were in. My daughter and I spent an hour moving our things and neither the mgr nor grown son offered to help as they stood nearby talking.
Our second room only had a heater in the bedroom but since the living room has a sleeper couch a heater is needed in there, too. My daughter froze. This room needed a coffee maker, oven mitts, a mirror outside of the bedroom (full length would be nice) and the mattress in the sleeper couch needs to be upgraded.
The first floor only has an elevator, tiny entry and stairwell. The second floor is the lobby and manager's rooms. The luggage trolley barely fits in the elevator so be sure to lay suitcases lengthwise. I generally enjoy the smell of different foods, but coming from the manager's rooms early in the morning was a bit much. The location is two blocks from Hermosa Beach mall and one block from the beach. There is a lifeguard stand nearby, frequent volleyball games and the pier (so be careful surfing). Great location; hotel is acceptable.

I had hesitated to write about the Grandview as it's the sort of old style good deal hard to find now and best kept to oneself. You will not find the ersatz elegance of a resort inn or chain hotel. You climb stairs & pass through slightly unprepossessing public space but nearly all the rooms have classic traditional motel comfort & the upper floor (rooms numbered 200 etc) ocean-view rooms are terrific. The town location is also excellent. On off peak nights good rates can be negotiated but you must keep track of the exact deal, rates almost double on peak nights like New Year's. I can believe the stories of past management eccentricities but Trip Advisor has had a good effect here & now a polite young man is often at the front desk. I love this kind of place & good deals can be had. On celebratory nights (I was once there on St. Patrick's Day) the city side rooms can be noisy.

I recently stayed at the Grandview Inn for the second time, having stayed there before in February of this year. The price for an oceanview room (or any other, for that matter) can't be beat in Hermosa Beach. The rooms are very spacious, well-maintained and immaculate. The rooms have balconies to enjoy the perfect southern California weather.
This hotel is just steps from the strand and the beach and within 2 short blocks of the pier, bike rentals, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and anything else that's happening in town. They provide early morning coffee, with real cream and flavored cream! The staff is friendly and helpful. The parking is FREE. (Parking is an issue in Hermosa, especially near the beach, so this perk is invaluable) Besides the usual in-room toiletries provided by most hotels, they go one step further and provide things like tooth brushes, toothpaste, and a razor. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the premises (yay) and loud partying is not tolerated. (there are dozens of places to party within a few blocks) I will probably be visiting Hermosa beach twice a year from now on and I wouldn't think of staying in any other hotel!

We are coming to this hotel for the last seven years on weekends, just to spend a day at the beach. The Grandview Inn is the best place in Hermosa to stay. Superb location for active weekend, we have walking distance access (30 seconds) to the beach, to restaurants, coffee shops, and bike rental place. The rooms are spacious and remodeled, some have great ocean view, and all rooms have balconies. They have bathtub, toiletries, toothbrushes and very clean. The owners are very friendly people, they live in the hotel and if you need anything, you just go to the counter and they take care of it. We would highly recommend this place. Great value compare to Beach House at Hermosa (next door) with rooms twice more expensive or Sea Sprite motel with a very bad service and poor rooms.

Met my 24 y.o. son for a weekend of "bonding" (haven't seen each other in over a year). Rooms ranged from $139-$250. Not wanting to be couped up, I went with an ocean facing, balcony room.2 Queens room was $250; King bed room was $200 so I brought an air mattress for the younin' and took the King room for $200. Ocean facing, balcony rooms next door at the Beach House at Hermosa were $500 a night. Room has fridge but no coffee-maker, microwave. Routine was Starbucks for coffee, NY Times; Hermosa Pier to drink and read; 30 minute swim in 68 degree water; shower at hotel then out to breakfast. Hermosa plaza with 10+ restaurants and 10+ bars one block from hotel. Rented bikes and rode to Venice Beach (25 miles RT); needed massage (Massage Envy, $49 for newcomers....ask for Rosa!). Left the weekend a bit sunburnt and closer to my son. All is good.

Great value. Rooms are clean, has bathtub, toothbrushes, ladies shaver, toilettries, cooler, kitchen sink, everything is nice, TV with a ton of channels, although you will be spending most of your time hopefully outside: 30 seconds walking distance from beach, multiple bike rental places on the same block including one (hermosa cyclery) which recently acquired high-end road bikes (60/day 195/week) along with the regular (and much cheaper) cruisers and boogie boards and umbrellas. Then there's the pier across the block with tons of eateries, shopping all over, etc. (If you like hamburgers you need to try the kilauea at islands which is a couple mins in a car...google it). Back to the hotel - they have a garage too, and the staff is very friendly (I believe it is a family run operation) I've stayed here twice now, and they are consistent around the clock. I don't think there is a restaurant/pool/all that, seriously there are restaurants literally next door and the ocean is right there! If you are a pampered nose-bleed you might be disappointed with this review, otherwise this inn's for you!
