“Brilliant location and phenomenal restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2009

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon and it was the perfect setting. The gardens at the back of the hotel are inspiring and the fruit and vegetables are used in the restaurant. We would without a doubt recommend booking the restaurant- we had the 7 course tasting menu with the cheese course and the ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. Outstanding!!!! The maitre d', Josep, was a very charming man and "the tour of the world" cheese selection was so much fun. The head chef, Jesse, also came out to speak to all the guests at the end of the night and he was very humble and lovely- for a man so talented! Congratulations Madrona Manor on an amazing location, fabulous food and brilliant service!

Having read an article in Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report not long ago, we were intrigued to try Madrona Manor, a country inn on eight acres just outside the picturesque town of Healdsburg, for a three-night stay in April, 2009. The first two nights were spent in the Garden Cottage. The two rooms were petite but comfortably and artfully furnished. The king bed was luxurious. The cottage was set off by itself alongside the garden, so very private--perfect for a honeymoon couple, or any couple desiring quiet. The third night was spent in one of the two grand and spacious second-floor rooms on the front of the original house which have access to the balcony over the front porch. The balcony offers the best view on the property of the Dry Creek Valley and surrounding hills. As in all the old houses and hotels I've visited, one can hear other guests through the door if they talk in the hall. When we return to Madrona Manor, I would like to try one of the two Schoolhouse Suites just down the hill from the rest of the accommodations. We toured many rooms while on the property, and, for location and decor, the Schoolhouse Suite was my favorite. Strolling through the fine old gardens and admiring the roses in bloom was a delight of our visit.

I must say that the restaurant at Madrona Manor is the crowning glory of the property. I sincerely hope that Chef Jesse Mallgren decides to spend the rest of his career cooking his inspired cuisine at Madrona Manor! What a personable, caring man! He makes a point of touring tables, inquiring of guests how they like their dinners. When I made a suggestion regarding the breakfast which is included in the room rate and which is not directly under his supervision, Chef Mallgren accepted it graciously, without becoming defensive. I have dined in many fine wine country restaurants in the Napa-Sonoma area, but I cannot recall another with a chef who is so personally invested in his restaurant and in pleasing his clientele. The restaurant is also supervised in a masterful way by Joseph Bain, an authentic French maitre d' who is a raconteur par excellence and who looks after his guests' every comfort and wish with such flair that one feels transported to Paris! A more romantic restaurant would be difficult to find: in the house itself, room after charming room offers privacy and elegance in antique furnishings, some of them from the first owner. In warm weather a wonderful covered veranda with views over sloping lawns, fountains, and towering old trees offers an alternative dining experience.

I conclude by offering a compliment to the owners, Bill and Trudi Konrad, for their continuing interest in their property and its guests. We often saw Bill and exchanged a few words with him. He also stopped by tables in the restaurant during dinner. Their oversight must also be felt in the excellent hospitality extended by the staff in reception, who were most informative and patient with our inquiries and shared interesting stories about the old Manor.

We did go into Healdsburg for an excellent dinner at Cyrus and a look around the elegant public rooms at Les Mars Hotel, but our hearts had been stolen by Madrona Manor!

We absolutely loved our stay here! The Manor and its gardens are lovely. We stayed in the incredibly cute Carraige House, in a room with a large, shaded balcony, complete with comfortable lounge chairs, a table and chairs (with umbrella) and a great view across the vineyards to the mountains. Absolutely fabulous! (This room, 503, is the same one another recent reviewer raved about.) We loved the balcony so much we made a point to come back in late afternoon to relax on it every day before dinner. Watching the stars at night from the balcony was also quite special.

Although the balcony was definitely the main draw, the room was fine, with a large king bed, a sitting area, bathrobes, fluffy towels, and nice toiletries. The Carraige House rooms are more simply decorated than the main house - the innkeeper was kind enough to show me two large master bedrooms upstairs in the main house, both with balconies as well, which were quite grand. (The one that had been the original owner's bedroom in particular was absolutely stunning.)

Breakfast was a buffet, with a variety of options, including croissants and popovers, cereal, cheese, ham, hard-boiled eggs, and a different hot dish (such as quiche) each day, along with what my husband declared to be excellent fresh orange juice. The innkeeper was there at breakfast to speak to each of the guests.

The Manor's concierge provided excellent recommendations for wineries to visit, and arranged for appointments where needed. The recommendations were great, providing a range of unique experiences.

The Manor is a very short (maybe 3 minutes?) drive from town, but provides a very relaxing, country inn experience. We were totally enchanted, and wished we could have stayed much longer. Run, don't walk, to this lovely place.

This was our third trip to Healdsburg. We stayed at Honor Mansion and enjoyed splendid accommodations the first two times. But after an awesome dinner at Madrona Manor, we decided that we must stay there on our next trip, and so we did. Big mistake--we couldn't help making comparisons to our previous visits and found shortfalls in several areas.

1. No complimentary wine in the room at Madrona Manor. Is this not wine country? We were very surprised because this is standard fare at Honor Mansion.

2. Madrona Manor repeated the unsatisfactory breakfast concoctions every other day. Honor Mansion offered different gourmet buffet break-fests every morning.

3. At Madrona Manor no morning coffee was delivered to the room--a hike up to the main building for a Styrofoam cup-to-go instead. At Honor Mansion a tray with a hot carafe of coffee, cups and saucers and biscotto was delivered to the room. Delightful--I MUST have coffee first thing in the morning when I open my eyes.

4. No afternoon tea/coffee at Madrona Manor, which was an everyday occurrence at Honor Mansion.

5. No evening wine tastings and snacks at Madrona Manor--on the schedule everyday at Honor Mansion.

6. Our dinner at Madrona Manor was a major disappointment. Our entrees were hugely unsatisfactory, especially my duck, which was a specialty of the chef. If the maitre d' weren't such a charming gentleman, I would have sent the dish back to the kitchen as I should have done. It was inedible. But, I had no wish to embarrass anyone and hoped the chef would get the idea when my dish went back to kitchen practically untouched.

7. Would we stay at the Madrona Manor again? No. The Honor Mansion is more accommodating, and for less, I might add.

We just wanted to let you know what a wonderful stay we had at Madrona Manor and how much fun it was to spend my special birthday celebration in such a great place! We were thrilled with the rooms - 503 in the carriage house with a great balcony and a fabulous view overlooking the valley and hills beyond - and 202 in the mansion at the top of the stairs with a great four poster bed and large bay window overlooking the pool and the carriage house. The fabulous staff were gracious, service oriented and very friendly. We had a wonderful breakfast each morning with fabulous home baked croissants and beignets, great cheeses and fruit. The owner graciously waited on us both mornings we were there. It was delightful to hear from him the history of this magnificent home and fun to watch the old pictures on the digital frame in the reception area which highlighted the past of this wonderful mansion.
The pool was a wonderful way to relax and unwind in the late afternoon before dinner.
Regrettably we did not dine in the restaurant in the evening as we had hoped but perhaps next time when we come back for a return visit. Madrona Manor exceeded our expectations in every way. The only drawback was trying to go to Napa and Yountville for dinner in the evening was a much further journey over the mountains than we had anticipated and Trinity Road was a scary drive of bends and sharp curves!!!! Healdsburg was nice and quiet and relaxing with little traffic and few crowds.

We booked a room here after making a restaurant reservation. I negotiated an affordable rate (thanks Tripadvisor!), and stayed on the third floor of the Mansion. Our stay was wonderful, the dinner exquisite and the bed was heavenly.
Breakfast the next morning was ample, varied and delicious. We walked it off with a walk around the beautiful flower, herb and vegetable gardens.
