“Chalkboard makes a big deal of small plates”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Wife and I had the awesome pleasure of experiencing Chalkboard last week. The food is creative, unique and exquisitely presented. The wine list and the pairing flights offer wonderful opportunities to experiment and taste a wider range of wines. The cocktail list includes inventive new drinks and the ambiance is relaxed but upscale. Executive Chef Shane McAnelly and General Manager Sean Coleman have made a new Healdsburg hot spot out of the old Cyrus at the Hotel Les Mars. All of this at value pricing. Amazing! 2 people with 2 flights of wine and 6 different dishes for less than $110!

“Interesting”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

The restaurant is in the back of the building, no view and kind of dark, but a cosy set up for evening dining. The menu was diverse and advertised as small plates. We shared a salad, the soup shooters, a vegetable, pasta and pork belly. The vegetable special wasn't very exciting, the rest quite nice and plenty of food. The service was average, it was functional at best.

“Wonderful discovery in Healdsburg, CA”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

Chalk Board is a great culinary discovery in the former Cyrus location in Healdsburg. Open just two months, the food, wine, atmosphere and service were really excellent. A really wonderful evening.

“Amazingly consistent for a new restaurant”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Though not long in this location, the restaurant provided consistency rarely seen in a restaurant still in its infancy at less than three months. The decor was handsome and masculine without being offensive (if only I could master that ability).

Everything was above par if not spectacular. Started with the cheese offering which provided a fine sampling of local fromage. Followed that with the sliders that though popular because they were a little fatty were my least favorite of our dishes (although the homemade biscuits served on were fantastic). Quickly redeemed itself with the little gem salad that lived up to its apt name.

However, the true jewel of the meal was the gnudi. My dining companion muttered that she could have just eaten bowls of that. With fresh mushrooms, lemon, and butter swimming alongside homemade pasta, I couldn't agree more.

In a place where high quality food has tough competition, was more than pleased with this experience. For the writer who was concerned about portion size, growing up in Los Angeles in an era of small plates, I can usually concur. Fortunately, Chalkboard does not serve "elf- food". We found 4.5 dishes more than enough for two people.

The staff was professional and demonstrated a knowledge about the fare and wine that surpassed their young years. The manager also was extremely helpful and gracious in talking with us about the history of the property and even suggesting a good place for after dinner drinks.

I look forward to seeing this youngster grow up, but if early appearances matter, this place should have a bright future.

“Great little restaurant”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

This restaurant is attached to the Hotel Les Mars but feels nothing like a hotel restaurant. The food is wonderful, the wine list great, and the service friendly and eager to please.
