Two of us ate at Madrona Manor last night. One of the best meals I've had, anywhere.

The service was polished - friendly, attentive, knowledgeable (especially about the wine - the wine pairings are heartily recommended), but not overbearing. The food was divine. At first we though the portions might be a little on the small side, but as we savored each mouthful, we realized that the balance between quantities and courses was near perfect. (And the amuses bouche and palate cleansers were wonderful, too.)

The highlight for us in a meal of wonderful moments was probably the cheese course: 8 superb cheeses sourced locally and world-wide, presented with a knowledgeable, witty banter (and we're not great on banter, so this was a pleasant surprise). Novel, but effective presentation - the chevre was warmed before us to bring out the flavor - and a portion of the unwarmed version provided for comparison. Yup - it works. With dates and grapes. Divine.

The liquid-nitrogen-chilled ice cream was quite a show, and fairly tasty, too. But we still went back to those cheeses when we discussed the meal. And the Oh-Toro Tuna "Crudo" with estate beets. And the Vidalia Onion Velouté with banyuls vinegar, 63ºC egg (itself a small wonder), and Parmigiano-Reggiano froth; and the ... but you get the idea. We polished every plate. $315 for two, including wine and tip.

I just went back to Madrona Manor to have dinner with a few friends. Wow! Dinning in Sonoma County is, and should be, a memorable experience, but Madrona Manor is certainly taking it to a new level!!!
Madrona has always been THE Romantic spot in the County, with it's pristine Victorian setting, carved wood fixings, antique decor, flowers, and it has never been rushed in any way, the table you get, is for you and you only for the whole night !, the food is just pleasurable, beautiful, served at the proper temperature, and in a timely fashion, and now they have a new Cheese Cart with a representation of the best, and I mean best, of Sonoma County and Europe. I can't stop day dreaming about the one with the Black Truffles, or the one from the Northern Pyrennes, but they were all so good it was hard to pick a favorite! The maitre D, Josef, who by the way , is equipped with a wealth of knowledge and charm, helped us make our selection. Ask him about anything culinary, wine, cultural or travels. You will be delighted.
Everything was like a dream, amazing food, wonderful wines, nirvana-like atmosphere ( and the most attentive service) , the tasting menu is not only very carefully planned, but it is a great value as well! but at 78.00 for 6 courses ( 8 if you count the starters and the not at all tiny "palate cleanser" ) it is very much a bargain! just when we thought we couldn't have another bite, we were Amazed, make that Bewildered, ( Followed by Flabbergasted after we tasted "it," what is this "it" , ready????
TABLE SIDE ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!! and no I do not mean a cart size Ice Cream Truck, I mean they produced the ice Cream before our very own eyes! this elegant wooden cart carried the finest ingredients, Cream, Sugar, Soaked Cherries, Fresh Vanilla, etc, they brought it to the table, mixed all in a bowl and then took out this small steel container filled with liquid nitrogen.( the rest is literally "foggy" in my mind) In less than 5 seconds, among the "fog" ( think Dry Ice when you add water) they turned the liquid into goey then into perfectly textured, just the right temperature, premium Ice Cream!!!!, by the time Josef was offering Whipped Cream, house made Chocolate Sauce etc, this experience was so exciting, it had reduced me back to when I was 5 or 6. I was about to fall out my chair! I thought the era of Baked Alaska, Bananas flambee and anything with showmanship at the table was over, but this restaurant brings it back in an spectacular way. The competition is getting to be really fierce in the restaurant Scene in Sonoma County, but that is only for the benefit of the diners. Do not pass up the opportunity to eat at Madrona, but be ready to spend at least 2 to 3 hours being pampered and delighted! way to go Madrona Manor, you have a sincere fan here!

Dinner at the Madrona Manor Restaurant is not to be missed if you are traveling in the Healdsburg area and are interested in fine dining and wine. We have dined there 3 times since late October, 2006, most recently at the end of January, 2007. The meals have been consistently delicious and beautifully presented. The menus are carefully conceived (the 5 course tasting menu is our favorite, but we have enjoyed the 7 course as well as the a la carte.) We love that diners have the flexibility to exchange one course in a tasting menu for another, an accommodation which the dining staff does with gracious ease. This restaurant aims to delight its clientele! The wine pairings are superb, with most of the wines coming from the best of the local vineyards. The menu is constantly changing with seasonal ingredients, most of which come from their own gardens and top regional suppliers. Great attention and care is paid to every detail, including the ambiance. The dining rooms are all lovely and inviting, the service is better by far than any other of the fine restaurants in the Healdsburg area, and the ambiance is romantic but not at all stuffy......it's sort of relaxed elegance. In good weather there is dining on a lovely covered patio surrounded by gardens. Madrona Manor Restaurant is our #1 favorite restaurant in the Healdsburg area, and we have tried them all.
