If you want to avoid "$$$$" restaurants and didn't call way ahead for reservations at trendy places, you can just slip on into Mateo's. We sat out back on a warm night in a very attractive patio area. In fact, no one was in the actual restaurant, it looked dead. But the patio was buzzing. The patio has a garden where they grow and use fresh produce. The waitress told us they use 100% local and organic food!
It was very hard to decide on what to order and reading the SF Chronicle reviews made me want to order it all. We had Margaritas of different varieties (spicy, not spicy) and a very well plated and deliciously fresh Ceviche for an appetizer, although the Tacones were very appealing.
I wanted the tacos but they were out of crispy rock cod for the day (hint: because its fresh) so I went with a Comida (a platter of food), and my wife got a mix of tacos. I'm not a food critic so I'll stop there and just say it was a very good meal. To cap off the meal we had a dessert that was a cinnamon roll from a local bakery with Flan poured around it. Delicious.
Check out their menu online. Its creative and very good. You won't be disappointed if you go to Mateo's.
