If you want to avoid "$$$$" restaurants and didn't call way ahead for reservations at trendy places, you can just slip on into Mateo's. We sat out back on a warm night in a very attractive patio area. In fact, no one was in the actual restaurant, it looked dead. But the patio was buzzing. The patio has a garden where they grow and use fresh produce. The waitress told us they use 100% local and organic food!

It was very hard to decide on what to order and reading the SF Chronicle reviews made me want to order it all. We had Margaritas of different varieties (spicy, not spicy) and a very well plated and deliciously fresh Ceviche for an appetizer, although the Tacones were very appealing.

I wanted the tacos but they were out of crispy rock cod for the day (hint: because its fresh) so I went with a Comida (a platter of food), and my wife got a mix of tacos. I'm not a food critic so I'll stop there and just say it was a very good meal. To cap off the meal we had a dessert that was a cinnamon roll from a local bakery with Flan poured around it. Delicious.

Check out their menu online. Its creative and very good. You won't be disappointed if you go to Mateo's.

This is by no means your typical Mexican restaurant--it's more like "Latino meets cuisine nouvelle.".Only too late did we notice that almost every other table had orered their special appetizers (the ones that look like ice cream cones!

My wife and I recently visited Mateo's Cocina in Healdsburg and were fortunate enough to come accross and enjoy the culinary talents of this casual but well run restaurant. We are both mild heat eaters so were a little concerned but were easily led through a very diverse and accompanying menu. We had a tasty and fun experience and really enjoyed their recommendation of the Thomas George Estates Pinot with our food. Happy Cooking Mateo!!!

We had read about this place and thought we'd give it a try. Our server, Gwen, was friendly and helpful. The manager, David stopped by to see if everything was going OK. The food is an unusual mix of Mexican and Continental. The prices are fair and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

We ate at Mateos in Healdsburg tonight. We were hoping for good Latin food after a long dAy driving thru wine country. We were seated in the dining room which has nice decor, comfortable seating, etc. Reading the menu and deciphering the dishes was long and tedious. Itnis a fussy menu that tries too hard. Our meals were at best just OK. Not worth the expense. This is a pretentious restaurant with little substance to back up all the hoopla conveyed in the menu. (ie, a salad with 'burnt peaches that are "...so burnt they liquify and disappear" is just silly. Over priced, pretentious, not very good.
