what an awesome place! It’s on gorgeous land. Really the way you should see it is by trail ride. Nora was an awesome guide and took great interest in the safety and enjoyment of each of those riding that day. Hats off to Socks & Tiny – those horses were comfortable and safe. Going by horseback really enables you to see a lot of the property. The wine itself was amazing!

“Horses, wine, and three appellation valleys. Wonderful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

The Chalk Hill chardonnay was recommended by our friends at Venge in St. Helena. When we saw they provided horseback rides on polo horses we were sold. We arranged the ride with Rafael and arrived early Sunday morning; they told us no one would be there so they gave us the pass code and said they would meet us. Our trailboss took us up to the 'stables.' A huge round structure with rubber pavers, whirpool bath (for the horses), horse drier, etc. Better than what the clydesdales get at that hop brewer. We rode for a couple of hours, seeing all the vineyards, wildlife, and on one ridge you could look out and see three different wine valleys. The polo field is indoors; impressive. You can enjoy a catered tasting at the polo grounds; that is on our list to do. Afterward we enjoyed the tasting. The tasting room does not compare to the rest of the property. I commented they loved their horses and grow grapes and make wine on the side. The Chalk Hill Cabernet won second place in our annual blind tasting party for what that is worth; it is very nice.

“large estate with great variety of activities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

My partner and I visited Healdsburg for a long weekend, and Chalk Hill Winery was one of the wineries recommended by the concierge at our hotel. Unlike a lot of the wineries with tasting rooms far away from where they actually get their grapes, Chalk Hill was a huge amount of land on the actual winery property, with rolling hills and a maze of different planted grapes. It was interesting to learn that Chalk Hill doesn't sell or buy any of its grapes, so that's a great way to do quality control if you have a good product.

Of course, I am not rating Chalk Hill based on the quality of its wines because that's too subjective of a measure. (While I do think they had very good wines and we did take home a few bottles, it's up to each individual person to decide on that.) What I will say about chalk Hill is that it provides a rather large selection of activities to do on the property that other estates and wineries either can't or don't offer. They had options for wine pairings with lunch, touring their facilities and horseback trips in their woods, for instance. Even though we didn't, you certainly can spend a good half of a day at Chalk Hill exploring all they have to offer in a gorgeous setting around some fabulous wines.

“Horseback Riding at Chalk Hill Winery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

My husband and I booked a 1.5 hour horseback ride through the vineyards (vineyardrides.com). The owner, Rafael, was fantastic and our guide was even better. We are beginner riders but I think anyone would enjoy this as they cater to your level. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

“Great Winery Tasting/Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2012

Had such a pleasant tour/tasting with our guide! It was a beautiful late October day and Fletcher offered the first part of the tasting upon arrival, then piled our small group into the Humvee to tour the vineyards, horse arena, and lush gardens with glass in hand. An unexpected surprise came when we saw the gardener working and then spent a half hour or so climbing through and eating fruit and herbs right off the vines while listening to more interesting facts. I highly recommend a visit to this gem of a winery!
