My partner and I visited Healdsburg for a long weekend, and Chalk Hill Winery was one of the wineries recommended by the concierge at our hotel. Unlike a lot of the wineries with tasting rooms far away from where they actually get their grapes, Chalk Hill was a huge amount of land on the actual winery property, with rolling hills and a maze of different planted grapes. It was interesting to learn that Chalk Hill doesn't sell or buy any of its grapes, so that's a great way to do quality control if you have a good product.
Of course, I am not rating Chalk Hill based on the quality of its wines because that's too subjective of a measure. (While I do think they had very good wines and we did take home a few bottles, it's up to each individual person to decide on that.) What I will say about chalk Hill is that it provides a rather large selection of activities to do on the property that other estates and wineries either can't or don't offer. They had options for wine pairings with lunch, touring their facilities and horseback trips in their woods, for instance. Even though we didn't, you certainly can spend a good half of a day at Chalk Hill exploring all they have to offer in a gorgeous setting around some fabulous wines.
