We happened by The Wurst while walking around town in Healdsburg. Having spent the week eating in fancy Napa Valley eateries this was just the ticket. while we were looking at the menu the owner Charles Bell came up an explained all his different offerings, the ingredients, the heat and suggested toppings. We don't like sauerkraut but you've got to try his; it is great. We loved the different homemade relishes, ketchup and mustard. Good choice of beers too. I wish we has one here in the east. If this isn't on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives there is no justice in the world. Friendly staff, involved owner.

We enjoyed fresh and flavorful brats and polish sausage (the latter recommended by the owner and direct Detroit, his hometown) while dining on the outdoor patio. Good food and friendly service. A really nice edition to downtown Healdsburg.

Lots of variations of bratwurst, dogs and burgers. This place is usually jamming, but the attendants are there always checking up to make sure people are happy. Very nice staff.

The indoor area is noisy, chairs all around are high - as are the tables so be prepared to let your legs dangle. You enter and read a board filled with many hot-dog selections and a few sides and make your choice. The servers bring you the food by number. Here's the drawbacks: Though the food is ok, I can make a very good hot dog at home and the buns are the basic you'd find at a grocery store. The cole-slaw is unique being a vinegar sauce rather than mayo based so be prepared for a change-up. Sodas have been shipped in form Detroit, so that's pretty fun. The catch, is we walked away hungry but spent a good amount of food. I think I'd vote for a picnic in the downtown square and a sandwich form a deli. I can say I've been back a few times with out-of-town guests, but will likely put an end to this adventure now.

So we cruise around the town square in Healdsburg looking for some lunch and somehow on a busy Saturday on Labor Day weekend we find a parking spot right in front of The Wurst. The universe is directing us to eat here, right? They specialize in different kinds of hot dogs and sausages served on buns hence the name, clever if you read it but not so if you hear it. We wend our wat through the crowded front patio, filled with patrons sitting eating alfresco under outdoor umbrellas shielding thm from the bright Sonoma sun. The universe has apparently abandoned us because, once inside the industrial space, we both order the house hamburger. We then realize after ordering at the counter, taking our order sign to one of the long communal tables and pouring a couple of plastic cups of water from the shared table water pitcher, we didn't order any of the sausages! D-UH! The universe then slaps usnon the side of the head and we get right back up and order one of their signature sausages, the Detroit with onion rings and sauerkraut and special mustard. First the bugers. They're okay, nothing to write home about and for over 8 dollars, a bit pricey. The're called Smash Burgers but they aren't all that smashing. The wurst was also a bit pricey as well. For the same amount you get a reasonably chubby sausage with adequately fried frozen onion rings and a soft bun. Again not all that remarkable. What is remarkable is the very friendly and helpful staff, young and energetic and happy to please. What is also remarkable is the great terrace out front on a sunny day. I'd come here again just to sit outside on a sunny day, munch a hot dog and quaff a beer from their more than adequate collection of draft and bottle beers and watch the world go by. Not the wurst way to spend lunch.
