This is a very small restaurant with a local Mexican-American decor. It is a very casual atmosphere. The service was EXCELLENT and the food proportions were large. [photos included with this post]
This is not the usual type of Mexican restaurant I would choose to eat in (looks too hole-in-the-wall for me but it was recommended and not very far from our hotel. The food is slightly more greasy than I am use too but not as much so as you find at a lot of these types of establishments.
We had the Chile Rellenos ($8.45) and the Stuffed Zucchini ($10.25). They have seafood items as well. There is also domestic as well as imported beers ($3.00 & $3.50) in addition to Margaritas and Wine. We very much enjoyed both meals but our favorite was the Stuffed Zucchini.
The Chile Rellenos was the kind where you really taste the chile (not too spicy) and cheese and not at all heavy on the egg batter (how a Chile Rellenos should be). We don’t like the kind that taste more like an omelet. The sauce was a little different than we are use to but it was good - more like an enchilada sauce.
The Stuffed Zucchini is stuffed with ground beef and topped with ranchera sauce and melted cheese. It was so very tasty!
You get complementary chips and salsa. The salsa was a bit too spicy for my taste. And there was complementary flan at the end of our meal - they gave us a big slice to share between us. The flan is the best I have ever had - it is thick and creamy.
We came late on a Friday night and there were three musicians wondering the floor playing some very enjoyable Mexican music on their base, accordion and guitar.
We will definitely return when we find ourselves in the area. Or maybe we will make the trip from San Diego to Los Angeles just for the food at Zacatecas (seriously).
