This restaurant is the place to eat in Half Moon Bay (El Granada, actually). It is packed on a week-end night so either make reservations, or walk in about half an hour early. The hour and a half quote was less than 30 minutes. Just enough time to start a glass of wine and an appetizer watching the sun set over the marina. Awesome. Food is very good, a little pricey, but what you might expect for seafood. All four wines we tasted were pleasing and reasonably priced.

I have been to San Francisco many many times and this is always on the top of my list. First of all, if you sit outside you are practically right on the ocean. Absolutely stunning on a sunny day! On top of that, the Lobster Rolls are incredibly delicious, lobster literally spilling out of the tasty toasted bun. In fact we usually split one because it is too much for just one person. I also happen to love the Caesar Salad there. I have only been there for lunch so I can't speak about the dinner menu. Another option is to get your food to go (they have a take-out area) and then head down to the beach. What could possibly be better? Go early, before noon or you will be stuck in the long lines of traffic forever. Love love love this place!

Driving along Highway 1 at lunch time, I was dreaming about a clam chowder..and suddenly I saw Sam's Chowder House... from the road the restaurant didn't look that special.. but I decided to give it a try.. what a surprise when I walked in the dining room and discovered the amazing patio with a fabulous view on the ocean..! And the food and the service was all the same perfect..! Best Clam Chowder, delicious oysters, divine keylime pie.. A complete enjoyment... Will return as soon as possible (although I live in Switzerland!)

The reviews did not disappoint. The food and service were excellent. The restaurant was already packed with diners at 11.45am on a weekday. I definitely recommend to eat at this place.

Realizing that Sam's major appeal is the ocean, it does not need to stretch its culinary wings to get great reviews. After all, seafood by the sea should be a no-brainer. It ain't the only game in town ( but pretty close to it.) As a transplanted East Coaster (40 yrs in CA), the food is no better nor the scenery any better than your average coastal eatery from Maine to Florida. Too many flies inside and no AC on a hot day does not allow me to give Sam's any more than 3 stars. The food - what there was of it - was just fine. Our 4-top all remarked about the small portions......but large prices. It takes a lot for an ocean view restaurant to get past "average" for me, and Sam's absolutely does not.
