“Ok place on the water's edge but only come during winter to see the surf break.”

We went here to see the famous 50ft surf breaks but was told that it's only a winter break. So, my review will be more on this place as a park. It's an ok place for a run and to walk your dog, and it looks quiet and 'peaceful' too. It is also next to the sea, which I think is a huge bonus as you get a great feeling being right next to the sea. It also offers a scenic view of the beautiful houses and buildings right next to the area. However, without the famous break (note I am reviewing the area without the famous break) this is just average. The beach is quite small although beautiful and the walking path is not long enough. I have to stress though that if I had come here during winter, this review would well have been different.

People know Mavericks because of the Big Wave Surfing contest. The wave break is to the west of the Pillar Point reef. When the big surf is rocking and rolling in the winter it is quite an awesome sight. But what most people do not know is that the big surf is uncommon; a winter phenominon that is caused by a confluence of tide, Pacific storms far off the coast, wind, etc. More importantly, most people do not know that this reef has some of the best tidepooling on the Northern California Coast. At very low tides you can walk almost out to the surf break and you will see all manner of sea life: various kinds of starfish, sea anemones, crabs, etc., and maybe even a small octopus or two. So check the tide tables because this is a reef walk not to be missed!

It was low tide and it did not look any different than the rest of the area. I missed the waves and wish I would have been there to see them.

Great memories of hiking with my family and friends to watch waves &surfing. Great place to watch fireworks if they are sitll doing them at the fourth of july. Stay on the harbor side for a good view of fireworks. Bring a picnic.

The only thing about the Mavericks is being able to see them from a viewing location. They are so far out, and the only perfect place to see them is military property. But we found a pier close by and were able to see these amazing beasts with our binoculars. Breathtaking
