“A Great Hotel But Not a Great Ritz”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Ritz Carlton in early July 2013, and had a blast. We booked a horse back riding excursion through the concierge and that was great and relatively inexpensive. The views were spectacular, and we had great weather (60s). The rooms were very nice, but nothing more than you would get in a nice Marriott or Renaissance hotel. I just expected a bit more from a Ritz Carlton based on prior experiences.

Food and Drink - the bar service was good, but be sure to request the brand of liquor you want. One time I ordered my wife a Cosmo with grey goose - it was great and cost around $17. The following day I ordered the same drink but forgot to add "with grey goose" and ended up with Absolute instead - still $17. As for the food, we only had lunch in the main hotel restaurant and weren't particularly thrilled with that experience. Navio looked nice, but we ventured into Half Moon Bay for dinner each night.

$500-700 per night! Our room was under the restaurant which was loud, but had a beautiful ocean view and balcony. Everything is overpriced like drinks, food, and massages. The pool is a very far walk from the hotel and they don't let you know you can use the spa hot tubs for free and not just with a $200 massage. I was very impressed with the view and the fire pit area, but it's easy to get bored there. The shower was way to small even for a thin person with no ledge to shave my legs. The towels were rough. I did love that they do a turn down service with pieces of chocolate.

Had to attend a business dinnner and meeting and overall was pleased with the hotel and service. A bit annoying, but understandable to only have valet parking. The front office staff was very efficient with check-in.
The room was large, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom seemed overly large. Not pleased with the tub (too short for a bath) or th shower (doors did not stop in either direction). Having a firepit outside the sliding glass window was a nice touch.
Was able to take a nice walk out above the beach and adjacent to the golf course.
Bar service outside was good. The prices were outrageous, even for a Ritz. Two drinks and a simple appetizer ( $ 80.00). WOW!
The banquet dinner of steak and crab was a nice presentation. Hard to explain skimping on bread. Servers were energetic and attentive.
Valet service in the morning was slow. Glad I called in advance.
There were lots of room service trays left outside doors (including our room at check-in) both days we were here.

This resort is placed in a beautiful spot...seaside cliffs and swirling fog. The facility is attractive, with a warm and welcoming lobby, and clubby bar, and dining area that overlooks the ocean view. The sleeping rooms have white painted woodwork, gas fireplaces, and have more of a Hamptons-vibe versus a Scottish one. The sleeping rooms i've stayed in (3 different stays) are suffering some wear and tear, and tend to have a somewhat musty odor that I assume is the result of the persistent fog and humidity. The most memorable...and negative...aspect of this resort is the appalling service. In this location, drawing from a modest economic base, you are not going to get a great pool of talented service professionals. And, it appears the resort does not succeed in training them. You get sloppy, haphazard, well meaning but entirely goofy service from alot of young whippersnappers who seam to be in their first jobs ever. For the rates, you expect a much more professional experience...but you will not get it. Add to that a sharp recent decline in the quality of the restaurant service and food...and there is limited reason to visit this resort apart from a day trip for golf.

Room Tip: Of course insist on ocean view

Do rent a car so you're not limited to the hotel and grounds. The hotel staff was responsive. Wine at check in was nice. Restaurant service was slow when we asked for bar seating instead of waiting for a "real" table. But only once. Food was yummy. Drinks are expensive. Area attractions are nice and it's close to the SF airport if one takes Hwy 1 through Pacifica. If you want to do Segway, it's only available on Fri, Sat and Sun. Ask for a room with an ocean view or with the outdoor fireplaces which are really good.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view, or an outdoor fireplace

The best thing about this hotel is being able to walk along the coastline over the cliffs and enjoying the stunning views. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I've been to with lots of seafood options like crab and sashimi along with the regular prime ribs and breakfast foods. The room was decent with a fireplace and a nice view. It is a nice place to relax for 1-2 days. Parking is not included.

I love the Ritz-Carlton: the staff are exceptional and the views from the hotel are amazing. However, on this occasion I booked late and was given a room in one of the annexes. It is a five minute walk there from the hotel which is fine if you aren't in a rush but a bit of a nightmare if you are in business meetings. The room itself looked a little tired and the walls were thin enough that on the first morning I was awoken at 6am by my loud neighbor on a conference call - very frustrating.

We ate in one of the private dining areas which was fine, if a little soulless. The food was delicious as ever though.

I still love this place, but this trip had its challenges
