Absolutely gorgeous and well maintained.  A very challenging coarse that may be a bit lengthy for the below average player.  I would suggest playing from the front tees to make your round more  enjoyable.  After all, you want to have fun after spending all that money.

This is a course that is adjacent to The Colony residential area. Each player must pay $45 for a cart, whether you want one or not. Serious golfers play here. The course plays well and is well tended to by dedicated staff. Nothing cheap here...

This is by far one of the best keep secrets in Northern California, the Links at Half Moon Bay has two fabulous 18 hole courses, the Ocean Course which is approx 10 years young and the Old Course some 33 year old ( a great links course). My favorite is the Old links Course, long tight fairways full of trees and traps placed to challenge your skills

I played the Old Course in the morning and the Ocean Course in the afternoon.

PROS:
1. The staff here were really accommodating. From the valet, proshop, starter, to beverage cart, everyone was friendly and helpful.
2. The Old Course was in really good shape when I played. I'd played Pasatiempo the day before, and the greens on the Old Course were in better condition.
3. The first 16 holes of the Old Course meander through woodland-style land, then the last 2 holes open up to really beautiful ocean holes. It's a pleasant surprise to drive up from the 16th green to the 17th tee and be treated with a ocean view.
4. The 18th at the Old Course is a great closing hole with not only a flanking ocean view, but a large gallery of spectators on the hotel patio.
5. The last 3 holes of the Ocean Course are 'fun' holes and also provide nice ocean views.

CONS:
1. The Ocean Course has a pedestrian path that winds through a few holes. The most annoying is definitely 18. I'm surprised it's not a safety issue with pedestrians very close to the landing areas. We even had a family walk out into the fairway to take group photos, WHILE WE WERE TRYING TO PLAY THE HOLE! Nuts!
2. The fairways of the Ocean Course often run parallel, so expect to have a lot of golfers spill over into yours.
3. I played on a Saturday, and there were no marshals on either course. Pace of play wasn't an issue at all on the Old Course, but on the Ocean Course, we ran into a 6some on the last 3 holes. That was really frustrating.
4. The biggest negative of the whole experience was that THERE'S NO DRIVING RANGE. I'm really surprised that they have 36 holes and nowhere to warm up.

Overall, the courses were really fun layouts. I would play the Old Course again in a heartbeat, but I'd look for alternatives to the Ocean Course.

Recently played Half Moon Bay's Ocean Course. Greens fee was approx $150 on GolfNow.com. Regular rate approx. $200.
The previous post has various negative comments-some are true, but would definitely give Half Moon a try.
Note that previous poster lives near the ocean. For those of us who don't see the ocean except for a special week of vacation each year, this course has wonderful views on nearly every hole.
The course is not manicured like Augusta, but is in very good to excellent condition. Not a problem for anyone.
In addition to being able to see the Pacific from nearly every hole, the last 4 holes play right along the ocean. Beautiful.
Let's do some comparison shopping for Northern California golf....Pebble is over $500. Obviously a better course, but very expensive. Cypress Point is beautiful and approx. $350. Spanish Bay is a very tight course, but has the benefit of being near Pebble Beach. No course in San Francisco offers the views of the ocean that Half Moon offers.

Warning: Play the Ocean course. The old course only has 2 holes on the water.

For the price and the view....Half Moon is beyond compare
