We spent 3 nights here over the 4th of July weekend. There were pros and cons to this hotel. For spending close to $300 a night to stay here, we had high expectations which unfortunately were not met.

Pros: so new that it still had the fresh paint smell to it, near restaurants and the water, the rooms and decor were gorgeous, a good number of newer cardio machines in the gym with 2 plasma TVs, and the view of the harbor was nice. Free parking in the underground garage was nice too. The rooms had a large mini fridge, coffee maker and bar, 2 TVs, fireplace, sitting area, and new, nice furniture. The staff at the front desk for the most part seemed friendly.

Cons:
1) the spa is advertised online as opening in early summer. Incorrect- try late fall. No shops and restaurant attached as advertised, from the looks of the construction, no way that those are opening any time soon either.
2) Their website advertised itself as a full service hotel with concierge and bell service- we wondered where this was as we dragged all of our luggage right passed the front desk on our way in and out as they watched us, and when we needed info on local attractions, they referred to the same brochures we did for directions which we could have done ourselves, and which we did multiple times. We didn't see a valet either- another false advertisement.
3) There is a small restaurant/pub as you walk into the hotel- there is no sign with their hours of operation or a menu listed outside as you would see at any other "restaurant."
4) the gym only has cardio machines, a handful of weight machines, and water- no towels (isn't that unsanitary?) and no free weights. If you like to work out on vacation, this is a bummer.
5) Our 2nd day there, we were away from the room for few hours, returning around 1:30 pm for a much needed nap. Housekeeping hadn't cleaned the room but because we wanted to sleep, we put the do not disturb sign on the door. An hour later the phone rang, and we answered after about the 4th ring- they wanted to know if we wanted our room cleaned. That was the end of the nap.
6) My biggest gripe- I overlooked a drawer as I packed up my clothes on our way out. I live over 2 hours away and didn't realize this until I got home that evening (this was a Sunday). After the hotel person looked into it, a few minutes later I was told that housekeeping had my things- I was in the area the entire day, I could have retrieved my things had I received a call on my cell phone, which they had under my reservation. I am sure they would have found a way to call me if I had left a bill unpaid. Yet no phone call after finding a drawer full of clothing? I explained my dire need of those clothes, as I was going away the following Friday so I gave my credit card # and stated to ship it the next day. Thinking that these people were competent enough to do this simple task, I naively said 2 day service would be fine, so long as I got it by Thursday.
To make this long fiasco short, I ended up having to call multiple times Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (no phone call to me explaining the delay, except for Wednesday when it was picked up finally), speaking to numerous people and having to re explain the situation to everyone. Needless to say, the package didn't arrive to my home until Monday (how is that 2 day service, anyway?), 3 days after I left on my trip (and I had to inconvenience yet another person- my neighbor- to pick up the package for me during my absence). Had I known of their unorganized management, I could have just driven back there during the week. You'd think they would have done it overnight on Wednesday knowing I had called for 4 days in a row at that point telling them that I needed it by Thursday.

Overall, we felt that the hotel spent so much money on the decor of the hotel that they opened prematurely, without training their staff on how to deal with their patrons and adding the final touches on their hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I am deeply sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations.
We have recently updated our fitness center, and the website does reflect the updated timetable for the spa and restaurant. As for the delay in cleaning your room and the disorganized fashion in which we returned your items to you, it sounds like we really "dropped the ball" on several occasions. I have used your letter as a training tool with the management and staff to avoid any issues like this in the future.
As you were not happy with your experience when you visited us, I would be very interested in speaking with you further about your stay. I can be reached at the hotel at any time. Thank you again for your feedback.

Sincerely,
Ben

This is by far one of the best experiences I have been lucky to have had. The Staff was courteous and more than willing to go out of there way for us. The room was beautiful ! Overlooking the harbor, watching the boats come in and out. You don't even want to leave your room. This is one of the cleanest places I have stayed at, you would think you are the first one to ever stay here. It's close to the little beach town......about a 2 min walk, with plenty of places to eat. If you are looking for a great place to stay in Half Moon Bay and be treated like your there #1 guest....I would reccomend staying here.

According to the website there are twenty-five shops and restaurants that are accessible from the hotel lobby and a spa on site. Upon arriving at the hotel none of the shops are open and neither is the spa. When we entered the room our confidence in house keeping took a big nose dive. There was a half empty bottle of water on the counter by the sink with the lid to the water bottle in the sink, the inside of the fridge was filthy, and there was an ashtray that was on the patio that was full of cigarette buttes which totally grossed me out since smoking is VERY adversive to me. Since we had asked for a non-smoking room, I didn't expect to get one that allowed smoking on the patio, which would explain the odd odor in our room. The website also states private balconies, but with the room we were given the set up of the balcony made it so that our balcony looked at all the other balconies and when our curtains were open people on their balconies could look into our room, so NO privacy. At $400 a night I expected the property to have all the amenities that the website represented.

Thank you so much for your feedback, and I sincerely apologize that our amenities were misrepresented on our website. I have since updated our information to reflect the completion dates for the shops and restaurants.
I am also disconcerted to hear about the fact that you were checked into a room that was not clean to our standards. I understand that cleanliness is very important in hospitality, and I have shared your feedback with the appropriate Housekeeping staff.
Thank you again for caring enough to tell us how we're doing, and please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss the issue further.

Sincerely,
Ben

We spent 2 Relaxing days at this beautiful brand new luxury hotel and spa. The staff was friendly and the weather was spectacular. Western views from windows and our private deck offer views of the fishing fleet and if you look off in the ocean you can see the famous Mavericks surf break. During winter storms the surfers ride 60 foot waves there.
There are good local eateries from Italian to a fresh fish place on the water called Barbar's Fish Trap. All are within walking distance of no more than 10 minutes.
The golf at the famous Half Moon Bay Links is not to be missed. Ocean views and wind, Very tough course. Really has the feel of an old course in Ireland or Scotland.

We spent our third night in a bed and breakfast located next to the hotel. During one of our walks we met their innkeeper Mary and she invited us in to look. The Pillar Point Inn was the name . The inn was a perfect end to our stay. A quiet night complete with distant fog horns, ocean air and a great homemade breakfast.

We traveled from Idaho to Half Moon Bay and found the most charming Oceano Hotel and Spa. The Oceano Hotel and Spa is located a short distance north of Half Moon Bay at Pillar Point Harbor. Staying at the Oceano Hotel and Spa was an experience where we found all the amenities one would expect from a very good first class hotel. Every room has a seaside motif and offers a beautiful view of the bay and harbor. The oceano also, offers rooms for a long term stay that are equipped with full kitchen facilities. An enclosed shopping mall is presently being constructed in conjuntion with the Oceano Hotel which will offer an added shopping experience. Also, many fine restaurants are located in the immediate area that cater to most any taste.
We can certianly recommend a stay at this complex.
