“Sunday Night Special”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

Several years ago we had gone to the Applewood Inn Restaurant and thought it was overpriced and the food just so so. The desk clerk at our Inn said we should go there on a Sunday night. That they offered a 3 course dinner for $30 and if you took wine made in the Russian River, there was no corkage fee. We figured that was pretty cheap, we would give them a try.
I did expect small servings and not great service, since we were going to order the special and take in our own wine. Not so.

The waiter immediately opened our wines and also brought an ice bucket for the white. The first course was a huge salad, with pear, blue cheese arugula and mixed greens, with a wonderful dressing. The entree was duck confit and the best prepared duck I have ever had. The dessert was a lemon iced ginger cake. I am not a cake person so this was just OK to me. This is the reason for the 4 star and not 5.Overall I would say be sure to go to the Sunday night special. It is a great dining experience without paying the higher prices.

“Fine dining in the Redwoods”

If you want an excellent meal on the lower Russian River, Applewood is the place. Outstanding dishes served in a lofty spacious dinning room. We spend every New Years Eve here.

“Did Not Disappoint”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012 via mobile

I always worry about starred restaurants being over-rated or over-priced. Neither is a problem for this darling restaurant. Food service ambiance wine list and value were all first rate. Only small glitch was the house Pinot (Hogshead??) that was nasty. Server admitted that it has been inconsistent which would make me think they should find a better alternative.

“Disappointing, average experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

We stayed in Sonoma County for 4 days and picked this restaurant as our special romantic evening, at the advice of the Inn keeper at where we were staying. When our inn keeper called to make reservations same day, we were offered only 1 time of 7:30. Upon walking in, we discovered about 4 tables in the whole restaurant actually had customers. I read other people had this experience as well. May be that they seemed to be understaffed. Our waiter was very rushed and carried on little to no conversation with us and disappeared for a great length of time.

I posted pictures of our entrees that look beautifully presented, but bland in taste. My scallop appetizer was well prepared, but my Halibut entree was over cooked and tough to cut, which is ridiculous for a halibut. The sauce was bland and the corn was boring. My boyfriend loved his appetizer, the steak tartare, but said his Steak Tenderloin was bland and the mushroom confusing. Potatoes were nothing special.

Our experience wasn't horrible, but it was very disappointing. This is not a Michelin quality restaurant. The award just seems to give them a reason to charge higher prices for mediocre food. And the service is disappointing as well. After a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert, our bill was over $200 before tip. I've had way better dinners in Milwaukee restaurants. One very positive note; the atmosphere is very romantic. And with so few people there, was very intimate. At least the wine was good.

“Tough competition in this area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012 via mobile

We went here while staying at the Farmhouse Inn, which is a great restaurant but not necessarily a great place to stay. There was a mix up with the booking that I had made on a poor cellphone line and, given it was Saturday night and they were very busy, this was handled really well. But we thought the food was not to the same level as some other Russian Valley Restaurants even allowing for the slightly lower prices at Applewood. Applying European criteria we thought the Michelin rating was not deserved. The food needed more refinement and the service team needed more co-ordination.
