If you want an excellent meal on the lower Russian River, Applewood is the place. Outstanding dishes served in a lofty spacious dinning room. We spend every New Years Eve here.

I always worry about starred restaurants being over-rated or over-priced. Neither is a problem for this darling restaurant. Food service ambiance wine list and value were all first rate. Only small glitch was the house Pinot (Hogshead??) that was nasty. Server admitted that it has been inconsistent which would make me think they should find a better alternative.

We stayed in Sonoma County for 4 days and picked this restaurant as our special romantic evening, at the advice of the Inn keeper at where we were staying. When our inn keeper called to make reservations same day, we were offered only 1 time of 7:30. Upon walking in, we discovered about 4 tables in the whole restaurant actually had customers. I read other people had this experience as well. May be that they seemed to be understaffed. Our waiter was very rushed and carried on little to no conversation with us and disappeared for a great length of time.

I posted pictures of our entrees that look beautifully presented, but bland in taste. My scallop appetizer was well prepared, but my Halibut entree was over cooked and tough to cut, which is ridiculous for a halibut. The sauce was bland and the corn was boring. My boyfriend loved his appetizer, the steak tartare, but said his Steak Tenderloin was bland and the mushroom confusing. Potatoes were nothing special.

Our experience wasn't horrible, but it was very disappointing. This is not a Michelin quality restaurant. The award just seems to give them a reason to charge higher prices for mediocre food. And the service is disappointing as well. After a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert, our bill was over $200 before tip. I've had way better dinners in Milwaukee restaurants. One very positive note; the atmosphere is very romantic. And with so few people there, was very intimate. At least the wine was good.

We went here while staying at the Farmhouse Inn, which is a great restaurant but not necessarily a great place to stay. There was a mix up with the booking that I had made on a poor cellphone line and, given it was Saturday night and they were very busy, this was handled really well. But we thought the food was not to the same level as some other Russian Valley Restaurants even allowing for the slightly lower prices at Applewood. Applying European criteria we thought the Michelin rating was not deserved. The food needed more refinement and the service team needed more co-ordination.

We stayed here on a special so we didn't necessarily go all out on the menu, but we did order some additions, like the seared foie gras which was mouth watering. In addition, the scallops, beef tartare, lamb, and steak were all prepared very well. The deserts did not stand out but by then we were already in a blissful coma from the massage and dinner.
