“A Gem by Armstrong Redwoods”
Reviewed April 23, 2011

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Fern Grove Cottages. We stayed in a studio which was cozy and very clean. The staff was very knowledgeable of the area, and happy to share tips. Breakfast included coffee, tea, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit and baked goods (bagels & cream cheese, danishes, scones, etc). The grounds are BEAUTIFUL with amazingly fragrant flowers, and redwoods dashed in and around the cottages. Also, free internet, and they had a computer and printer free for guests.

We didn't go on any wine tours b/c I'm pregnant, but we did go to Armstrong Redwoods - highly recommend this (lots of easy/moderate hike options and fantastic trees). Another couple staying at Fern Grove did wine tours and said there are a ton of places nearby.

Overall, this place was a great value and we would definitely stay there again!

We highly recommend staying at Fern Grove Cottages in Guerneville, CA. We only stayed one night but would wish we could have stayed longer. The first thing you notice would be the setting of the cottages in the beautiful trees. This is located not far from Armstrong State Park and Korbel Winery, both well worth touring. The cottages themselves are quaint, clean and comfortable. Ours had a full kitchen and fireplace with two bedrooms. We felt very welcome because of the friendly check-in by Margaret, one of the innkeepers. Since this was our first time here she answered all our questions as to what to see in the area. The breakfast area and lobby was very inviting and comfortable with a fireplace, books and a selection of music. Breakfast consisted of home made granola, jams and scones, yogurt, a variety of breads, juice, tea and coffee. Everything was displayed in a home-like setting. The large dining table encouraged travel conversation among the guests. In the afternoon guests were welcome to come to the dining room for a glass of sherry.

We highly recommend Fern Grove Cottages!

Traveled in Oct. 2009 (couldn't select that above) and really enjoyed our stay in our own personal cabin. We stayed in one of the detached cabins, with a wrap around porch and surrounded by trees, meaning it was fairly quiet. (Ask for this; you'll be happier.)

When you pull up, you see a big retro, neon sign saying "fern grove" -- which instantly takes you back to an old roadside inn from the '50s. There's a little check-in cottage, and then more than a dozen cottages crowded around a circular parking lot that's dotted with pretty flowers and redwood trees. Our cottage was set back a bit, which we preferred.

The cottage itself was clean and cozy with a working, standing fireplace (not built in the wall), an eat-in kitchen, a living room with a tv and couch, a bedroom with a wardrobe and comfortable bed, and a big bathroom with a sit-in jacuzzi tub for two. The decor, though, was uninspired -- functional, inexpensive but non-offensive. Soft sage, peach and brown colors, a shaker style bed frame -- a little bit country, a little bit cottagey, but not rustic at all, which we would've loved.

In the manager's cottage the owner serves breakfast -- scones and coffee, which was quite good. And in walking distance was a yummy whole-in-the-wall taqueria. A little more of a walk in town was a grocery store, post office and some other restaurants and tchochke shops, so you're not in the middle of nowhere. We drove to other food destinations (Farmhouse Inn) and took trips to the coast (about a 25-minute drive) and wineries (you're close to everything in Russian River Valley.

Would I go back? Yes! Loved the feeling of being at a camp without the camping part, and the privacy.

These cottages are very well-kept and quite nice. Margaret (owner) and her husband obviously take a lot of pride in their establishment and it shows. Our cottage was clean, quiet, and very cozy with a very good bed (very important). It rained during our stay and we enjoyed just being in our warm room reading and listening to raindrops fall. Guerneville is a great little town. A step back in time. Everything in town is within walking distance of the cottages. Good restaurants and live music. A wonderful place for a romantic getaway. Stay here, you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I had a great stay at this cute inn. We were most impressed with the friendliness and enthusiasm of the staff and enjoyed the interesting flower and vegetable garden. We had one of the smaller cottage studios which was more than enough for the two of us. The breakfast was quite nice and the famous homemade scones did not disappoint. We would certainly return on a future occasion. This is not a "luxury" inn but is excellent value for a wonderfully cozy cottage experience.

Stayed here three nights in July after some time in San Francisco. Lovely cottage, kind of quirky, retro furnishings. It was very comfortable and clean. Nice breakfast provided in main house and you get a chance to meet other guests if you'd like. Margaret, the owner, has tons of information about wine, wineries, vineyards, tours, tastings, etc. Very helpful in our planning. Cottage is snuggled into the redwoods. There is a saltwater pool. Very relaxing and fun.
