“top campsite!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2012

Stayed here few weeks back and campgrounds are big, with good spacing between them all dotted in ancient redwoods. Showers are super nice. The couple that run this place are so laid back and super helpful with tips and recommendations regarding the local area. Right by the lake as well and the owner has created a wicked little walkway down to the river across from the campsite as well!! Other great thing is no stupid RVs allowed!!!

My boyfriend and I were going to stay in the nearby state park but due to california's lack of funds camping is no longer available. We stumbled on schoolhouse canyon and were so pleased we stayed an extra night. The bathrooms were super clean, the camp spots were clean as well as beautiful and the camp host was friendly and helpful. I will be back and I reccomend this park to everyone.

Campsites are beautiful - tree-lined and shady with camping amenities such as potable water and SUPER clean bathrooms, hot showers and firewood for sale onsite. The location is great - near the river, near wineries and the local watering holes. Pooches are also welcome.

The staff is also fantastic - Chris is full of smiles and will go out of his way to help you out. When you check in, he makes it clear that it is a family-oriented campsite and quiet time starts at 9:30pm. His family has owned this campsite for 6 generations.

Definitely recommend taking your family here.

We stayed on busy Friday and Saturday night. The staff is very nice, say hello to the dog, also very nice. The wood bundles are a pretty good deal, worth buying it there and not from Safeway or something. They have a nice area across the highway that is on the river...but be careful crossing. Overall it's a pretty nice campground. However, it is a noisy campground. Being situated on the highway, you will hear road noise. Also, the sites are very close to each other. Both nights, despite quiet hours beginning at 10 and us being in the 'quiet' section others have mentioned, there were parties and loud talking and laughing until at least midnight. I did like the sites being close together in the morning as I made a point to allow the kids to scream bloody murder at 7:30am next to the people with hangovers. Not conducive when traveling with kids. My only other critique is that they charge a lot for add-ons. Showers cost a minimum of a $1, and it took half of the allotted time to get hot water. If you have visitors for an hour, you pay by the visitor, not by the car and they do charge ‘day use’. If you have friends in the area coming for dinner or lunch, I’d park in Guerneville and sneak them in your own car.

My friend and I stayed at this campground for one night, we would have stayed more if they had any campsites open for the night. I appreciate the "adult" section toward the back of the campground. It's nice to be able to sit out and talk without worrying about little kids. The owners are fantastic and we had a great time going into town (by cab) and having a night out. You can go swimming in the river which is right across the road on the campground's land. Armstrong woods and Korbel winery are close by too: don't stay here because you'll take my spot :)

When you're camping, you're not going to sleep well. The campground is situated in a narrow canyon and noise travels. There are several group camp sites where 4 or 5 tents/cars were situated. Despite what the website says, "If you want to party" this IS the place to go. Large groups talking in loud voices or singing with guitar at one site and stereo pumping out dance music at another-- it really is a good place for a family reunion or weekend away with all your college buddies. There is one bathroom building with 2 showers and 5 toilets for women so this can equal a long wait for a shower. There was a coed heaving in one of the toilet stalls in the morning. A little craziness that I suspect is not present on an average weekday. I would recommend this campsite on a weekday because of the friendly hosts and the relatively clean bathrooms and convenient location.

I selected Schoolhouse Canyon Campground based on no particular reason. My three kids (all under 9) and I spent three nights and four days midweek. The campground itself was great! If you are in the lower numbered campsites (I was in #6), then you are closer to the highway, but that is no big deal. Just don't expect quiet like you're in the desolation wilderness or something!

The staff are extremely helpful and very laid back. The campground is located near every activity you could want. Right next to Korbel vineyards, 5 minutes from Johnson's Beach (where we canoed, paddleboated, inner tubed, etc) and pee wee golf (kind of expensive, but the kids loved it), 10 minutes from Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve (Old Growth Redwoods), 15 minutes from fishing (Riverfront Regional Park), and 30 minutes from the Ocean (we went to Goat Rock and watched the harbor seals, but Bodega Bay is only an additional ten minutes south on the highway).

The bathrooms/showers are exquisitely clean, and that is much appreciated when you have youngsters who flinch at the sight of some big bad bug. Our campsite was very spacious. The kids had plenty of space to run around. The firepits vary from site to site. Some are the traditional state park round metal ones, others are more at ground level. No bears to worry about, and I never spotted a raccoon around. I still made sure not to leave food out.

The temperature at the Campground is always cooler than the surrounding area due to the redwood growth there. I did not see a campsite that had sun exposure. After a good warm day at Johnson's Beach, it was nice to cool down at the campsite.

Midweek most definitely did NOT require reservations although I made them anyway. Wish they took VISA!!! Cash only! The campground was sparsely populated while we were there (Tues-Fri). I cannot speak to what weekends are like when it is usually full.

I absolutely recommend Schoolhouse Canyon Campground to anyone. If you want a site with electrical availability, you will pay an additional per day fee of $7. The only disturbance I had there was when a car alarm went off for several minutes late at night after quiet hours. Unfortunately, it was my own car. My apologies to anyone who was camping there at the time!!!
