“A true oasis of calm”
Reviewed October 22, 2013 credit card Amex Card Member Review

It's hard to put into words how welcoming and calm Highlands is. We have visited two times and cannot fault it. The grounds are quiet, relaxing and so well kept. The pool is so relaxing and our room was perfect for a few days of quiet in the Redwood forest. The breakfast is freshly baked and you can enjoy it with the hummingbirds flying about. What also makes this place so special are the owners. You only have to ask for suggestions on which vineyard to visit or where to watch whales surfacing after eating fresh fish and chips by the ocean. This is a truly special place.

Great accommodations, central location, clothing optional pool, and friendly hosts make this place a winner. Our cabin seemed to have been recently updated and the bed was fabulously comfortable. Sorta like summer camp in that it's in the woods and there's no TV in the cabins - so be prepared when the pool and lounge close in the evening. We are a hetero couple and felt very comfortable and welcome.

Glamping at its uber best. It feels like you are camping in someone's backyard, and it literally is. Cabins in the front and expansive lawn/yard areas in the back.

The outdoor shower by the pool is one of my favorites elements of the place. Staring at the stars was my pastime. Did not have the feeling of anticipation, if you were truly in the woods, so to speak, hence a great break option to a cabin or a hotel room.

Pitch a tent and enjoy the camaraderie of your neighbors.

Cabins are comfortable but very basic. Thin walls, no TV or room phones, but still gives a nice feeling of being in an outdoors and good views of the redwoods. Close to town which is also
a convenient location.

There is a large pool area which allows nude sunbathing and a hot tub area also allowing nudity.

Rooms include a basic continental breakfast. Management enforcing lots of "rules" which I know
offended several guests. I doubt if I would return to stay here again.

Room Tip: There is a description of each cabin (about 15 total), so it is worth reading the description before...

My partner and I have stayed here many times over the last several years and have always enjoyed the location, the delightful owners and the great location. The pool is one of my favorites, anywhere. We have also had great Guerneville stays at other local resorts, but our advice is to check here first if you are a gay couple as it is the best.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Pool suite is probably the best.

My partner and I stayed here over three days. The place is amazing. Friendly owners, comfortable beds, amazing hottub in the woods.... This place is like heaven. Wineries are literally about 4 minutes away. I recommend the Westside Drive Wineries....

We have just returned from another wonderful stay at The Highlands Resort. This was our 15th stay at this magical place. We could travel to Paris in the time it takes us to drive up there from our home in Southern California but we prefer to go to Guerneville so that we can enjoy the beauty, peace and quiet of "The Highlands". The nine-hour journey is always worth it. Where else in the world can you sit outside on the patio of your cabin with your partner and your dogs and drink steaming cocoa or wine into the wee hours surrounded by towering, magnificent coastal redwood trees just feet from you? And where else can you enjoy a massage inside a grove of redwoods?
This is a unique property and it's lovingly cared for with great pride by its owners, Ken and Lynette. The landscaping is absolutely spectacular during the spring and summer months when the gardens are in full bloom. Over the years we have stayed in almost every room/cabin and not once have we been disappointed. The cabins are rustic, well-appointed, warm and spotlessly clean. I mention "rustic" as it seems that some reviewers unrealistically expect Ritz Carlton amenities here. We stayed in cabin 5 this time which has a great new bathroom and two-person shower. Our dogs slept in front of the gas fire all night. We had a microwave, fridge, full sets of cutlery and crockery, teas and coffees and the bed couldn't have been more comfortable.
Breakfast in the lodge is always a great opportunity to meet and chat to the other guests. As we stayed over Christmas, Ken and Lynnette provided all of us with a (free) Christmas-eve feast of Lynette's home-made specialties (She is an amazing cook.) wine and champagne. Breakfast, including sausages, quiche, granola, OJ, coffee/hot chocolate was provided on Christmas morning.
A very high proportion of Ken and Lynnette's guests are regulars, including us. We have made numerous friends with them over the years and make new ones every time we stay there. It's not uncommon for guests who meet one another at breakfast or at the pool to go to dinner together later or gather on the patio of a cabin to enjoy a glass of wine, conversation and laughter in the evening.
I could go on and on but, suffice to say, we love this place and hope it will be around to provide a beautiful, magical place for the LGBT community for many years to come. We can't recommend it highly enough.
