“Best place in Gualala!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

We spent 2 nights in the king suite with our dog. This motel has everything! Our suite was wonderful and had all the nice touches an inn in San Francisco would provide, there was even a telescope! The room was quiet and the view....spectacular! The feather bed was so comfy and the breakfast was quite a surprise. It was delicious! We even hat a Keurig coffee maker in our room!
There was a Bar-b-que, and a fire pit, and the walking trail was lovely.Everything was within walking distance. We could not have asked for more, and the staff was great. We will go back next year, and we highly recommend this great place.

Room Tip: Suites with the ocean view can't be beat!

We picked this place online. Sure glad we did! The "special" king room was beautiful. King bed, fireplace, unbelievable view, gracious hosts an a lovely hot breakfast. Does it get any better? Yes, as we watched the whales go by in the evening and in the morning early. First rate motel. Clean an very well appointed. Like the wife said, best wide screen TV we ever had. The window was about 5ft X 6ft!

Room Tip: The "view King suite is fantastic!

I wish I could take credit for the view out of the window, but alas it takes one Greater than I. So overwhelmed that you took the time to tell us and the Tripadvisor community of your stay and it highlights. Looking to have you back soon .

Mr. Surf and his wonderful staff thank you.

My husband and I stayed in room 113 for $99 a night from bookings.com. Our first reaction was at the size of the room. Its small. That being said... the place was like a swiss army knife, so the fact that it was small really didn't affect the quality of our stay at all. The room was really nicely furnished and had a fridge, a Keurig coffee maker, more cable channels than most motels, and even a small fire place that worked great. The bed was extremely comfortable. I went out on the deck and watched the sunset. It was a deep-friend cliche and I loved every minute of it.

I agree with other reviews in that I was SO impressed by the bedroom, but the bathroom was a total bust. The girl at the front desk, who was really friendly and helpful, made a point to mention that the owners had been working hard on renovations, and the bathrooms were the next in the list. I'll happily spend another stay here next year when we visit... so we'll see!

First off, thank you for your kind remarks. I was always taught if you reach for something in your room that should be there because of the value you paid, the inn meet the need, but when an item of value was there that you did not expect the inn exceeded your needs. We are working so hard to be that extra item of value.

Thanks again

Mr. Surf and all his staff.

Loved that you enjoyed our rooms and noted our hardwood floors and updated kitchen units, but we could never out do or upgrade the options that the sunrises and sunset give new decks and viewing areas. Hope to see you soon

The motel was an unexpected surprise for me and my family. We found this place last minute because it was getting too dark to travel. The reception was accommodating. The room beside the ocean cost a bit more for one night so we picked the one further away but close enough to see the waves crashing on the rocks from the distance out our window. It was reasonably priced for our budget.

The room 107 felt homey. It had a small fire place/space heater, large flatscreen tv, fridge and microwave. The bed was comfortable and shower with tub has abundant warm water. Definitely worth it!

The terrace outside is a great spot to view the ocean's majestic waves. The location may seem like a place you would disregard but it is pretty nice. Look around if you have the time!

I've been visiting Gualala regularly for 30 years or so - It's a small, relaxed, beautiful area. The Surf is a local icon and a nice place to lay your head while not exploring. Close proximity to Mendico, Point Arena, and plenty of other attractions.

This is a wonderful place to stay! My fiancé and I were in town for only 1 night to check out the Mendocino/Gualala area. The price was extremely reasonable for everything we got out of it. We had a room on the far side from the ocean, and still felt right on the water. We could hear the water at night, and walk to the little trails above the ocean. There is no easy access to the water. There were little seating areas with ocean view, and signs for trails to follow. (walking, not hiking ). The rooms are small, but very clean and quaint. The building is dated, but they have done and are continuing to do, remodeling. The service was outstanding. When we asked for an extra blanket for our 70lb dog, they gave us one of their own. They have a hot, home cooked breakfast included in the morning. Orange juice, eggs, biscuits, pastries, coffee, sausage, gravy and even made everyone waffles. Friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The area itself is very remote, and we still felt that at the hotel. However, we had everything we needed across the street - grocery, video, roadhouse, etc. We were not expecting such a lovely little place for the price, not to mention pet friendly, breakfast included and great location as advertised! Thanks to the Surf Motel, we will be back the first chance we get!

Room Tip: There are ocean view rooms available. Unless you want the kitchenette, I wouldn't pay extra for...
