Three of us stayed at the motel in a room with two double beds and a kitchen. Lots of room. The room was showing a little wear but was very clean. Down comforters on bed were great but double bed was small for me and my husband. The only thing good at breakfast was the waffles and those were excellent. We had a view of ocean across parking lot but there is no beach access from motel or anywhere in Gualala from what I could determine because the river is in the way. On south side of town you can pay $7 for access to beach or park on other side of Hwy 1 and walk in(about a 20 minute walk).

We loved Gualala so much the last time we visited, we made it a stop again on our annual motorcycle ride. We love The Surf Motel but thought possibly a fan in the rooms would help circulate the fresh ocean air on warmer days. The front desk staff is AWESOME, the view SPECTACULAR and the rooms very comfortable and well maintained. Definitely recommend to all traveling the coast.

We always say " A repeat or return visit is the greatest compliment you can give to us", thank you so much. It is because of our wonderful returning guest who allow us to continue to upgrade the inn. This last year we remodeled the kitchen suites and put hardwood floors in all guest rooms.

Thank you all so much

Don t rely on a last minute check on your phone or PC in that area, there s almost no signal. You have to trust your instinct on this one. Last minute check in, we were able to get 2 rooms, 1 standard facing the parking lot and 1 upscale with sea view. The standard is OK, good enough for the price knowing that you re located in a great spot. The upscale room facing the sea was a great surprise: very large, unobstructed view toward a very relaxing beach and super quiet. Too bad the fog did not let us fully appreciate the morning view over the bay.
Breakfast included is very good and the manager was courteous and helpful.
I would recommend a walk on the trail 1 mile away from the hotel in order to fully appreciate this little jewel.

Room Tip: no hesitation if you can afford it (~$180/$190): go for 1 of the 3 sea views.

No a/c in rooms, so small that you couldn't turn around to get dressed. Breakfast, if you want to call it that was a disaster. Bathroom tub had a crack in the middle of it that was mended. Room smelled musty. View by the water was nice. No AT & T cell service. Coffee wasn't done at 8:30 am when they open to serve breakfast. Eggs were not cooked fully & they ran out. $149.00 too expensive for this place. We will never go back. To give them a break, I don 't think they were ready to accommodate all at once for breakfast.

The rooms here are not spacious, by any means, but they were very modern and clean and cozy. After a day of biking, this was just what we needed. They do not have a family suite, so we had to get 2 rooms for my family of five. Staff was very friendly. Breakfast was good. Did not have laundry services on site. Right on the ocean with a nice vista point. But no beach access from here.

You have me thinking, can I make a larger offering by adding a connection door between rooms?, I will look into it. We are planing more changes after the season is over.

We will be adding a laundry room very soon.

Small coastal towns usually have little choice in lodging - and often more expensive because of it. The Surf is actually quite reasonable, considering its location (on a bluff above the Gualala River and ocean beach).

There are a couple of small eateries and two grocery stores a short walk away. You do need that walk, because these rooms are small - typical of an older property. Having said that, the outside of the building is fairly charming, as are the rooms - the furniture and beds definitely look and feel upscale - very comfy.

Breakfast is tasty, prepared by the manager (ask her about how she and her husband ended up in Gualala - interesting and entertaining story). At the end of the parking lot there is a park-like setting where there are chairs with views overlooking the bluff - great place for watching sunsets.

My adult daughter and I stayed here on a recent mother-daughter trip. We found this motel to be quite charming and pleasant. It is not fancy or luxurious, but it is clean, well-decorated and is in a beautiful setting. We did not have an ocean view room but it was a 1 minute walk out our front door to be at the water's edge. They have a great complimentary breakfast and a friendly staff. There are many nice little touches in the rooms such as hardwood floors and wonderful-smelling lotions and shampoos! We would definitely stay here again!
