I stayed 2 nights at the Surf Motel recently and I was pleasantly surprised by the upgrades that the new owner has done. It looks pretty much the same from the outside, but just walking into the lobby I was shocked at how nice it is. We used to stand at a long countertop which gave the feeling of waiting in line at a convenience store. Now there is an open feel to the lobby with a large desk with two very comfortable leather easy-chairs to relax in from the drive. It feels more like walking into a colleague's office than a typical "motel check-in".
The rooms are the next surprise... the beds are tall, I don't know if they are pillow-top or if they have some kind of extra cushion under them, but they are super comfortable. They had fancy duvet covers on the comforter, definitely not what I am used to seeing in Gualala!! The absolute best upgrade was the TV, our room had a large flat panel TV with a great picture. I would guess it was a 36" or so?
I could see they are still making upgrades and changes to the property, but they certainly made the upgrades that will keep me coming back, I will definitely be staying there again.

Pleasant surprise...by the Sea!! Great location in a quaint Seaside town. Was greeted by our most gracious host and owner, Eric. Quick and easy check in with lots of 'tips' on where and what to do while staying at the Surf Motel. We were directed to our PET FRIENDLY room with a kitchen...2 kids, 2 Golden Retrievers and Mom found it quite cozy and well stocked wth kitchen ware and utensils. Absolutely gorgeous view of the Pacific out our picture window, not to mention outside and short walk to the bluff to watch for whales!! Short walk to a wonderful grocery market to buy supplies for 2 enjoyable evenings at the Surf Motel....We'll be back....as soon as we can!!
Thanks for a great and wonderful time!! Can't wait to see all the upgrades that Eric has been working on!!

Great price for a room so close to the ocean! Basic amenities but very clean and comfortable. Can't beat the value at this time of year, if you just want to get away for a weekend.

I'll highly recommend it to anyone who wants to explore the Rte. 1 coastline north of San Francisco.

We were on our way up the coast and got to Gualala as it was getting dark. (a Saturday)

At the Surf Motel two ocean view rooms were available, 159 and 179. We took the 159, all in all it was a decent bed with an unabstructed view of the ocean. there is a sandbar keeping anyone from getting to the ocean. The sandbar runs the lenght of Gualala.

The room was long, the bathroom clean, the wall heaters with the knob for hotter-> colder <- (I hate those :-) but we'd stop again if we were going through Gualala. I wouldn't make the Surf Motel a two day destination but it is a decent motel for the money. BTW no AAA discount available when I asked.

Nice place, a bit pricey for what you get (I paid about $100 for mid-week) but considering that Gualala has only four or so hotels in it...

The room itself was ok, there didn't seem to be anything particularly wrong with it. There was a refrigerator and a microwave, Those considering an extended stay here should consider bringing food from elsewhere, as there is a limited choice of restaurants and supermarkets in Gualala.

The beach is a few steps away, on a somewhat uneven path, so walk carefully. It's fun to sit on the beach and watch the sun set, and forget about things for a little while...

Gualala? It's a wide spot on the road, but at least the cars will (usually) slow down for you as you cross the street to get to the "Sundstrom Mall" (big, barn-like building full of antique and crafts shops). The Mall is also the place to catch the daily buses to Santa Rosa and Ukiah, btw.

We chose the Surf Motel on a recent trip to Gualala because it was centrally located in town and pretty much everywhere else was booked up.

As the name implies, this is a true Motel and as such offers very few services beyond basic lodging.

If you are unfamiliar with the Northern California coastline (as I was), "oceanfront" does NOT mean on the sand with waves breaking at your window as it does in Southern California or Hawaii. We were actually a couple hundred yards from the beach itself.

We payed $179 per night (weekend rate) for a deluxe ocean view room that was actually quite large and comfortable, like a junior suite at a traditional hotel. There was a gas fireplace, frig, and microwave in the room, along with a nice view of the ocean.

The room was clean although the carpet & window coverings were a bit outdated and we had a small problem with knat-type flies hovering around our windows. The bathroom is definitely nothing to write home about, but it was clean and functional.

The couple who own the Surf Motel appear to live on-site. They seemed disinterested in true customer service and appeared bothered everytime we went in the office. We asked about restaurant recommendations and the manager made a feeble attempt to push what was clearly one of his friend's restaurants.

I don't have a way to compare this to any other accommodations in Gualala, but I was not terribly impressed.
