There's much to love about Evergreen Lodge -- it's rustic and charming to the max. The quintessential "cabin in the woods" feel was delightful, and I actually enjoyed being cut off from society for a few days. Our cabin was quite small, but clean and comfortable -- fine for my husband and me. I loved the rockers on the porch and the gorgeous tree-lined paths! The bathroom in our Lupine cabin was incredibly small with a pocket door but, again, it was fine and even adorable to us. (No air-conditioning, though a large fan was supplied.)

A few things to consider . . .

• It's almost an hour drive from Yosemite Valley, where most of the action is. At the end of a long day of exploring, that 50-minute drive up the side of a mountain with hair-pin turns can be pretty stressful. The property itself is in the woods and NOT on a cliff, but you'll be traversing several cliffs to get there. The drive is very pretty if you have the stomach for it, though, with several turn-outs to park and take in Yosemite en route to the valley.

• No television, Internet or phone in our cabin. One of the communal buildings did offer wifi, but the connection was admittedly spotty and did not work for two of the three nights we were there. Still, it was actually rather relaxing! I'm a self-professed iPhone addict . . . and even I enjoyed the break. But something to consider if you need to be in touch. (But hey, you're on vacation, right?)

• It's close (just a few miles) from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which was very quiet and beautiful. It's much less hectic than Yosemite Valley but gets none of the acclaim, and there's plenty of parking there. If you're staying at Evergreen Lodge, be sure to pop over for a morning walk.

• The property boasts a full restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and we had many meals there out of convenience during our three-day stay. They were all wonderful! The food was great, the service stellar. Sylvia was our server every morning, and her friendliness and positive attitude were refreshing. It was great having a restaurant within an easy walk of our cabin after a long day, especially since we wanted to be out of Yosemite Valley before dusk (again, that drive is killer).

• Evergreen Lodge lies just at the edge of burned area of the 2013 Rim Fire, and the destruction is still very clear. The property itself is beautiful and untouched (though the fire reached right to the edge of the sunset deck), but your drive -- as of May 2014 -- will be through active logging areas where tons of burned trees still stand. Just don't be alarmed as you edge closer to the lodge.

• Lots of activities for families right on the property, and Evergreen leads their own optional, fee-based tours and trips most days. The options sounded wonderful, even though we wound up going on our own. On-site games like ping pong, shuffleboard, pool and small ziplining were really fun, too, and great in the evenings.

Hi, I’m Lee Zimmerman, one of the owners of the Evergreen. I’m delighted to read that you appreciated the Evergreen experience, and thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. It’s good of you to point out that guests need to plan accordingly for the drive back to the Lodge after a day in Yosemite Valley. Although many people think of the Valley when they think of Yosemite, the park is actually 1,200 square miles – bigger than the state of Rhode Island! Thank you also for spotlighting the Hetch Hetchy area.

More importantly, thank you for complimenting Sylvia specifically for her friendliness and positive attitude. Most everyone at the property reads our TripAdvisor reviews, so it is very touching when a guest cares enough to mention someone by name.

Congratulations on taking a break from the smartphone, and thanks for pointing out that the service is spotty at best. Know that we do invest in the highest possible satellite bandwidth available to our area, and it’s barely enough to support the demand in our public areas. Good for you for not letting that get in the way of your fun!

Note that the logging in our area is now complete. It is part of the process of recovery, and next the National Forest Service will be replanting targeted areas of need. We hope to welcome you back to see the recovery of the affected areas.

Nearly one hour from Yosemite Valley through 25 miles of white knuckle hairpin turns with the final six miles including a lumber cutting scene straight out of Axe Men, Evergreen is a nice family venue of individual and duplex cabins. Staff is great, property is relaxing even though a forest fire last year came right to the property line. The cabin was maybe 100 square feet, which was probably in the middle of sizes available. The smallest are ridiculous. That said, it was very clean. There's a restaurant on the property with great staff, though the menu was a little upscale for my simple taste. Nice game room and plenty of families to do. Only downside is the drive there.

Hello, I’m Lee Zimmerman, one of the owners of the Evergreen. I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the property, the service and the activities during your visit. Sorry that the drive made you uncomfortable and that your visit coincided with the National Forest Service’s logging operation. The logging is part of the process of rejuvenating the forest after last year’s Rim Fire, which passed through in patchwork fashion along Evergreen Road. Logging near the Evergreen is now complete, and next comes replanting in targeted areas of need.

I am also sorry to hear that your cabin was too small. There are many sizes to choose from, and I hope we’ll have a chance to welcome you back to a cabin that is better suited to your expectations. The smallest are our Vintage Cabins which are 250 square feet, each with a 75 square foot porch. We also offer Deluxe Cabins, One-Bedroom Cottages, and Two-Bedroom Family Cabins that range in size from 400 square feet to 600 square feet, each with a 100 square foot private deck. Additionally, we have custom camping sites where we have set up tents that are 120-150 square feet, along with basic camping gear. On the other end of the spectrum we offer the John Muir House which is 2,500 square feet and accommodates parties of up to 10 guests at a time.

Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to share your review.

We returned last week from 4 nights in the "custom tents" at Evergreen Lodge. What they don't say on their website is that most of the 6 miles leading to their lodge has been burnt completely or to some degree by wild fire. It was interesting to see however the 1st morning the chains saws and logging trucks started up 100 ft from our tent, after 3 days they had moved back to an area about 100 yds from where we were sleeping. This started anywhere between 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. each morning! The lodge is also a good 40 minutes from Yosemite Valley adding a lot of travel time if you plan to go back and forth. On a positive note the restaurant had the best food we found on our trip including The Alwahnee. The recreation room was great also and the tavern has tons of warmth and character, a wonderful place to sit and catch up on your day. I would say go for a meal and a cabin not necessarily camping. I think the least they could have done was given us a discount given the logging and missing camp chair. Sleeping bags were definitely not good to 30 degrees, luckily we had brought extras on our trip just in case.

Hello, I’m Lee Zimmerman, one of the owners of the Evergreen Lodge. Thank you for staying with us. It’s good to hear that you enjoyed our restaurant, activities and service. I am very sorry that the logging activity disrupted your visit. You have every right to be upset about it – we were not given advance notice of the National Forest Service timing on this operation and it caught us off guard as well. The logging near the lodge is now finished fortunately, which is of little comfort to you no doubt, as it clearly affected your stay. We wish you had mentioned your frustration to us during your visit so we could have tried to make things right immediately. I hate the thought of you walking away frustrated and disappointed. In that regard, we will try to reach out to you directly as well at this point.

The logging is part of the process of rejuvenating the forest after last year’s Rim Fire, which passed through in patchwork fashion along Evergreen Road. Next comes replanting in targeted areas of need. While we can’t do much about the Forest Service’s choice of timing, I hope you felt we did a great job at making all other aspects of your visit rewarding. I also hope that you were able to take home plenty of fond memories of the lodge and of Yosemite despite the frustration you encountered.

We stayed here for 2 nights over Memorial Day weekend.

The drive from the lodge to Yosemite's Curry village took us almost exactly 45 minutes (we did not encounter any traffic).

The drive from the lodge to one of the park gates is only about 9 miles or so, but the drive inside the park from the gate to the village took much longer. However, the drive is very scenic.

This lodge is in a charming wooden area. We had an one bedroom cabin. Our two children slept on the sofa bed, and they were comfortable.

The cabin is a bit rustic, but clean and comfortable. I was happy that the bathroom is quite spacious. I hate tiny bathrooms. There is a small refrig inside the cabin as well.

The lodge is in a remote area. But it is somewhat self contained with its own restaurant, and they offer a poolside BBQ buffet, as well as a general store that offer snacks and sandwiches etc.

We ate at their restaurant on both nights. They offered a menu with a decent selection of different types of dishes, and the prices were reasonable, and tasty enough for a mountain lodge.

A member of our family has Celiac disease, even though they don't have a Gluten Free menu, they seemed knowledgeable enough and were accommodating to our dietary restriction.

This lodge is very family friendly, and we saw lots of children during the Memorial Day weekend. They have a nice pool, with a jacuzzi, and a bar. They also have game rooms, a rope course, and a kiddie zipline that my 10-year-old just loved.

They general store offered hot breakfast and picnic lunch sandwiches. But this is where they disappointed me a bit. While planning for my day hike, I had called them twice, and both times they confirmed that they will have hot breakfast at 7AM when their general store opened. Not true. They had no hot breakfast out, and we were told that it could be an hour before the hot breakfast would be ready.

I also wished that they made tastier sandwiches for the to go picnic lunch. The selections were slim, and the sandwiches were quite bad. Even though I was very hungry at lunch time during my day hike, I barely ate half of my sandwich.

The day we were leaving, we decided to have breakfast at their restaurant. They were plenty of tables, but the kitchen was very backed up. We waited and waited, finally had to leave without our breakfast.

This lodge is very close to the Hetch Hetchy reservior. It is very worthwhile to drive out there for a quick look.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay here. The service was good, and the staff friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this place for families visiting Yosemite.

We chose the Evergreen Lodge just outside the west entrance to Yosemite for a recent celebratory family trip, including my husband, myself and three young children (1, 5, 8 yrs.). Rarely is a place just as nice as it is portrayed in the pictures and descriptions online, but we were pleasantly surprised to find this the case here! There is SO much to do, especially for families with kids, that we chose to spend one of our three days in the area just playing at the resort. I won't go into all the amenities, as that can be found accurately described on their website, but I will say that the restaurant offers nightly specials in addition to their rather varied regular menu, so even though you pretty much have to eat dinners there, we were kept happy for the four nights we needed to.

The only disappointment was perhaps that they tout their activity center as a great place to plan excursions, but unfortunately no biking outings were available due to the previous year's fire (not their fault, of course), and we were also slightly misled with regard to how long it would take to get to the Ahwahnee Hotel (1 hr. 15 minutes to be safe!). Additionally, the do rent DVD players, but they are no bigger than any old portable DVD player one might have at home, so bring your own if you have one!

Lastly, for those who are looking for specific location advice, we were lucky to stay in Cabin S12, which is a two bedroom, newer unit. It was perfectly positioned right next to the big children's playground, so we could literally watch our kids play from inside the cabin. Great if you are parents, but maybe not so if you are sans kids!

The Evergreen Inn is close to Yosemite and really close to Hetch Hetchy. It is family friendly with a salt water pool and a lot of play equipment for children, including an adult-friendly zip line. The restaurant is excellent and the young staff is enthusiastic. A highlight is an outdoor fire in the evening with the makings of s'mores.

We went on a road trip to Northern Ca to visit college campuses as well as enjoying a mini vacation. Our first stop was Yosemite. We rode from one end of the park (on the So Cal side) to the other end where upon exiting was the main road. From the main road you take another road 7 miles to Evergreen Lodge. It is in the middle of the forest and so peaceful. We got a 2-room cabin. Very clean, huge bathroom, nice size rooms. Great place to relax & get away from TV's, wifi, phone calls. They do have a centrally located room where you can access the internet if you choose. There is a restaurant that serves delicious food, a bar to enjoy a drink , a convenience store and a rec room with games for the kids. You won't be disappointed (or bored) as there are lots of activities to keep you busy. On the evenings we were there they offered smores for everyone. What a treat! The staff were friendly & very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas. You can't beat the tranquility, attentive & friendly staff here at Evergreen Lodge.
