The Cub Inn Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #5 of 6 Groveland B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 7, 2011

(*This is a good thing.)

At every other B&B in which I’ve stayed, some degree of “hotel-ness” prevails, be it a registration desk at the front entrance or distinct area for guest rooms. These things would remind me that, even though I was staying in someone’s home, the place is a business. Not so at the Cub Inn. You walk into Charleen and Joe’s beautiful log home, and just beyond the foyer is their living room. Off to one side is their kitchen – all part of an open floor plan. We stayed in their first floor guest room, which had its own bathroom off the hallway rather than adjacent to the room. I felt like I was staying at the home of a relative or friend rather than a place of lodging.

Informality and warmth is front and center. Joe and Charleen are incredibly down to earth, and while they certainly accommodate guests who want privacy, they seem very comfortable with having people in their space, God bless them. I found their attitude remarkable and refreshing.

Their home is lovely. One of the challenges about Yosemite lodging is finding a place close enough to the park that isn’t: 1) incredibly overpriced; and/or 2) shabby and gross. The Cub Inn is a great value, modern and comfortable. The log cabin theme is perfect for the environment; we thought the log shower in our bathroom was particularly cool. If I had one incredibly minor suggestion, it would be that they bump up the quality of the shower products (ours was a half-used bottle of a budget-brand shower gel that, out of necessity, doubled as shampoo.) The bathroom is so awesome that it would be a good fit.

The location, on the east end of Groveland, is a bit of a drive from Yosemite Valley, made worse by the summer crowds. But the distance is on par with other places that aren’t in the park, and the Cub Inn is much nicer.

Actually stayed here in July 2010 with my family of four. The Cub Inn is a large log cabin in the middle of the woods a few minutes drive from Groveland. It has three gust rooms, the largest of which can be adapted for a family of four.
Now, if you are looking for five star service and comfort, then the Cub Inn is not for you - and you probably shouldn't bother visiting Yosemite anyway if these are your priorities. The Cub Inn is comfortable, the hosts are incredibly friendly and the location is wonderfully peaceful. It is a place to come and relax and chat to the hosts and other guests over the home made breakfast or a glass of wine on the terrace in the late afternoon. If that is what you are looking for, then the Cub Inn is hard to beat. Only drawbacks are that you will have to get into Groveland for your evening meal (recommend the Mexican restaurant) which is not really walkable and the room was a little on the small side for the four of us. It's not cheap either, but we only stayed for one night and you should be able to negotiate a better deal for two nights or more.
My recommendation - spend a few nights here and enjoy the company and the nature. You will not be disappointed. If you are just passing through, stay in a roadside B&B, there are a couple in Groveland.

Room Tip: Stay for more than one night, The owner will negotiate a better rate

My brother and I stayed at the Cub Inn last August and had a great time. We were looking for a place to stay relatively close to Yosemite (everything within Yosemite was completely booked) and we came across the Cub Inn in Groveland. We had never stayed at a bed & breakfast before, and could not have asked for a better place for our first b&b stay,

The Cub Inn is basically a 3-room log cabin and is nestled in the woods of Groveland. The atmosphere around the Cub Inn is very serene and beautiful. It is run by Joe and Char who are the nicest folks. They treated us like family, even giving us water bottles for our hiking trips to Yosemite and a California map when we departed. It really felt like we were staying at a friend's house even though we had never met them. They also have a frequent visitor that comes up to the cabin, a deer named Robert! Char gave us watermelon scraps to feed him, which he seemed to really enjoy.

As for visiting Yosemite, we took Hwy 120 and the entrance to Yosemite is only about 30 min away. It's another 15-30 to the Yosemite valley if that is where you are ultimately heading. Joe was great in giving some advice on what to see and do. We spent two nights there and felt like we had seen a good amount of the park.

There's not a ton of things to do in Groveland, but if you're spending all of your time at Yosemite (which is what we did), all you really need is place to eat and sleep. There are a few restaurants in the surrounding area. We tried a pizza place nearby that was very good and we also ate at the Iron Door Saloon (it's a historic restaurant and bar), which was also pretty cool.

Overall, we could not have asked for a better place to stay on our visit to Yosemite!

My husband and I chose this inn based on the reviews on Tripadvisor, which we trust for accurate and honest reviews and we were so glad we found this place! We were on a road trip - drove from San Francisco and arrived at night.

The inn might be a little difficult to find at night (it's very dark for us city-dwellers), but Joe the innkeeper gave us directions and was there to welcome us and put us immediately at ease. We were so impressed with Joe's stories of how he and his wife built this house together - the living hall and kitchen are large and inviting, with plush couches, high ceilings, stone fireplace, several cats and a dog. We stayed in Dorothy's Room on the ground floor. The room is small and cosy and clean, with sufficient space for all our bags. it comes with a lovely toilet next door. there is no TV in the room but it is really not necessary - the wonderful thing about staying in a small inn is you get to sit together and share travel experiences and tips with the innkeeper and other travelers.

Location is great - as others have mentioned, Groveland is a tiny place with one of everything (we had dinner at Two Guys Pizza Pies cos they open late). It is about 30min drive to the entrance of Yosemite National Park which is really convenient without the high prices of staying inside the park.

Our only (and biggest) regret is that we did not get to stay longer and spend more time experiencing this beautiful inn and hearing more of Joe's stories!

We stayed one night at the inn it was very clean and only 30 min away from the enterance of the park. Joe was a delight to meet and breakfast was great. We wish we had more time to spend at the inn. Its great value for the money.

We stayed there 3 nights when visiting Yosemite park. The house is really nice with wood everywhere and great views of the surounding forest.
It is a good place to stay if you are vsiting yosemite park which is a 1h-1h30 drive.
And joe made us some delicious waffles... which is also another good reason to go there!
We would definitely recommend it.

We can't recommend The Cub Inn highly enough- we chose to stay for part of our honeymoon and weren't disappointed. Set in a tranquil location you will get a warm welcome from the hosts Joe and Char. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and Joe's breakfasts are wonderful. It was nice to be able to sit and chat with Joe and Char and the other guests in the evening and not just feel we had to stay in our room. We also had the opportunity to go on a plane ride with them which was amazing and we have memories never to be forgotten. We can honestly say this is the sort of place you arrive as guests and leave as friends
