“Thousands of beautiful butterflies!”
Reviewed December 31, 2011

When we visited the preserve on December 26,27, and 28 there were about 47,000 butterflies. To view the clusters of monarchs a short walk is required in the Ellwood Main Grove. We found that by parking at the very end of Coronado Drive and entering the preserve at that point that the walk was very brief, about 3 minutes. The surroundings are lovely and some of the clusters were close to the viewing platform. Once in awhile there is a docent present to provide information. If you want to see the monarchs active and flying then wait for the temperature to be around 60 degrees as they can't fly if it's below 57 or so.
There is access to the beach from the preserve. A hike on the beach leads to the Coal Oil Point Reserve where you can observe birds and surfers.
The trip to the Coronado Butterfly Preserve is certainly worth the effort! (No facilities, though!)
