“Poor Service at Bacara”
Reviewed August 12, 2010

My wife and I recently stayed at the Bacara resort and experienced less than stellar service.
First, the staff allowed the room servcie trays to remain outside of the adjacent rooms to ours for an entire day, finally being removed late in the evening. Opposite our front door was smashed food on the walkway and used Q-tips from cleaning an adjacent room. These two offending items remained the entire time of our stay (Thursday through Sunday)
Second, their room service menu was very misleading so I would caution any guest to make sure you call the room service department and make sure you understand what you are getting. What we thought was 2 breakfasts (eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, toast, Coffee and tea turned out to cost $90 with out tip. What the menu did not explain is that what looks like an ala cart menu turns out to be a complete breakfast menu so we ended up ordering double of everything. The front desk was quasi understanding and credited us $17.
Third, for you that are using the American Express Platinum resort package with the $85 credit, you should understand that regardless of what it says on the bottom of the coupon you"ll be presented with at check in, the $85 credit is only redeemable for the amount of a lunch you would charge excluding tips and alcohol. We asked at check in if we did not end up having lunch at Bacara would we still receive the $85 credit and she said yes, but at check out of course the check in person was wrong and the check out person looked as if we were making up the fact her colleague told us the exact opposite.
The location was beautiful and the room comfortable.

I have been going to MJ camp for several years and have stayed at several hotels in the area....this is by far the best. The prices came down a bit this year which made it affordable for us to stay there this year. I agree they could have some upgrades like WIFI and flat screens to keep up...even the Best Western has these...but the room and grounds were awesome and you feel good staying there. This one hotel that is not by a railroad track which turned me off of Fess Parker...and I am not facing a parking lot. I found it peaceful and very relaxing, even though I have my kids with me. There is a lot to do on the grounds which I love. I would recommend this to anyone going to SB.

My wife and I spent a night at the Bacara in late July and loved it. We've previously stayed at the Ojai Valley Resort, which is very similar, but the Bacara was better. Although the beach is not the type you want to spend time sitting on, and the oil platforms in the distance are not terribly attractive (who knew they were all over the CA coast?), the resort itself really couldn't have been better. Our room was great, and we were very happy with the service by the pool. Also, after dinner in Santa Barbara, we had a drink in the beautiful lobby bar. Overall, a great hotel and we would definitely return.

After reading some of the reviews before our trip, I started second-guessing our decision to stay at this resort. The excellent staff and beautiful grounds proved me wrong, I'm happy to say. I work in the service industry and was very impressed by the service at Bacara. All of the staff were helpful and courteous. Our room was comfortable, and the food was delicious. Our last meal was breakfast at the The Bistro, with a gorgeous waterfront view. We were tired and, without meaning to, made a number of small requests during our meal... one item at a time. Our waiter returned each time, with a smile on his face, and seemed genuinely happy to grant every wish. Thanks to Bacara for exceeding my expectations!

A group of 8 very disappointed in the service at this pricey resort. the resort looks good on the surface but once checked in, you see the signs of wear, poor upkeep and the overall attitude of the staff and service in the restaurants was awful. Much better places to go ato $400 per night and up. The beach along the frontage of this resort was not maintained. A walk on the beach offered only the smell of rotting kelp and dead birds. Awful stay.

For $800+ a night, don't open the windows on your balcony b/c it will fill your room with sulphur. Uck. You will also need tar removal cloths for the beach walk. When it's not high season, the pool with be desolate - that includes any staff to assist you. If you have to walk to the lobby, better put on those hiking shoes! The massage was mediocre. Over all, just not impressed....

We thought the Bacara was simply beautiful, the rooms were large and spacious. The pool was nice, although we were there at a very busy time and there was not enough seating. The staff was attentive and the service was great at all the dining establishments. The valets were very nice. I didn't make it to the spa, but wished that I could have. It's quite expensive for little things, $8-9 for a bowl of cereal in the morning for your kids, but the luxury and attention was worth it for three nights. The beach is not a swimming beach. Steep hills walking around the resort might preclude the less able from enjoying the grounds, we didn't mind the walks after eating such good food.
