All three times we have stayed there the service and amenities have been outstanding. Of course I suppose it's POSSIBLE that someone's individual experience could be a fluke ... but every staff member of the resort we have come in contact with appeared to take a genuine interest in our well-being, ready to do whatever they could to make us happy. In fact, when we had left our video camera in the room -- doiscovered after we got back home -- they not only found it, but volunteered to mail it back to us at their expense. The ambience is that of open-air grandeur and luxury, without that feeling of pretension that one often gets from snooty staff at similarly priced resorts. My only gripe is their $150 per day charge for private cabana rooms that hardly anyone uses. including us. An open-air canope cabana is $75.

On arrival at Bacara all was impressive with the courtyard reception and friendly front desk, the resort layout is very appealling and the room was a good size for our needs. However, room service was poor with a limited selection and pedestrian service, the staff service levels left a lot to be desired especially around the pool. Miro the resort's "fine dining" experience is at best average and over-priced for what is served and nowhere near as good as local SB restaurants like Bouchon. One issue that is omitted from the website photos is the close proximity of the resort to an offshore oil and gas platform. More worrying is the onland receiving terminal for the oil and gas some 500 yards from the resort. The oil and gas production contains highly toxic hydrogen sulphide gas - hence the discreet but alarming emergency warning signs in close proximty to the property. Had we known of the existence of this facility, no matter how "small" the risk of an accident or the fact that the hotel had "never had an emergency" we would never have gone to the resort in the first place. Overall Bacara was a disappoint that never lived up to the glossy website. Maybe they sensed our disappointment as they did not even bother to ask if we enjoyed our stay when we checked out.

We just vacationed at Bacara for 8 nights, best resort/hotel we've stayed at in a long time. The new treatments in the Spa are unbelievable, Miro's new menu is excellent and the service is too, weekend buffet's in Bistro showcasing Lobster, Beef Wellington etc is terrific. Young staff that care and attitude beats the old traditional service of most 5 stars. Departures, Travel & Discovery Channels have been promoting Bacara for the past few years and now we know why. Edgy and cool people all over the place, in shape and good looking and their attention to kids will ensure we keep coming back. Can see why one of the "locals" review wasn't positive....locals of Santa Barbara don't deserve such a neat resort and believe it is out of their league........to non locals......try it, you'll love it

Strange place. People follow you to the beach and ask where your from all the time. I felt like a criminal half the time.

I don't know what some of your dissapointed reviewers expected, but I had one of the nicest weekends ever at Bacara, celebrating my birthday with my husband. Although the service was a bit spotty, the staff made up for it by being so friendly, and always very accomodating when asking for specific requests. I don't know how they did it, but they always greeted us by name! And with a smile too. The grounds are gorgeous, and I didn't feel that it was too spread out-it was just right to allow for the more secluded feel. Plenty of carts around to carry those that can't walk the very short walk up the hill. The outside fireplaces all over the property made it a treat to enjoy the outdoors at night even when it got a bit chilly. If I could find any complaint at all, it would be that the poolside cocktails should come with bendy straws so that you don't have to sit up to sip your Margarita (one of the best I've had, by the way)! I will definitely be coming back.

The management at the Bacara needs to get a dictionary and look up the meaning of the word, "guest."

We're locals who stayed recently for two nights. Our first experience was when they first opened; we ate at Miro and were given a little mini-lecture about locals not really being welcome until after their grand opening, because there were several celebrities who didn't want the public around. However, as we had made reservations, they were nice enough to make an exception for us! We left with such a warm feeling, knowing that even though we weren't held in as high regard as their other customers, they were so kind to allow us to spend a couple of thousand dollars on dinner. First class!

Still, we went back figuring the grand opening kinks has been worked out....

Some snotty little girl checked us in, who did not smile AT ALL made sure we understood the "security deposit policy." She said, "...its to protect us, in case you leave without paying for incidentals." Ummm.....do you need to take our fingerprints and photos, too?

Dinner was fine, not really horribly exceptional, given the great dining we have in SB. The local college kid who served us dinner had thick black dirt under his fingernails and greasy hair. He also dripped water all over my husband and I because he didn't put a cloth napkin over the ice-water pitcher. He said, "Sorry, guys!"

I'm considering sending the manager a case of soap and a copy of Emily Post for the employees.

It seems your $1,000 per night doesn't cover cleanliness or any discernable trace of manners.
