With 100 acres of land directly on the ocean, two pools, multiple restaurants and a spa, it is much more than a hotel. It is really a retreat type place where you go to unwind, eat and drink.

The resort was recently acquired and they are clearly spending a lot of money renovating. I've seen some complaints on here about this but we found the renovation to be completely unobtrusive since the resort is made up of multiple buildings and no one is staying in the buildings that are under renovation. You can barely tell that work is being done even as you walk by as they have the buildings being worked on completely covered in tarps that are designed to blend in with the background. I've only seen that done in Europe on monuments under renovation. It does show a great level of care . The service was great from valet to the end of our stay.

Room Tip: Oceanfront second and third floor suites are the best (but expensive)

After hoofing it all around different central coastal cities, we retreated to Bacara for some much needed rest before heading back home (and to work). What I needed the most was a good night's sleep as the 2 previous hotels/inns we'd stayed at offered no respite.
When we checked in, we were upgraded to a suite with a fire place in one of the 'newer buildings' (according to the bellhop). The upgrade may have been due to either low season or that we had booked through Travelzoo. It appears that the resort is using this 'down time' to do some renovations to other buildings as they were all covered, but no matter, as the less people around, the more relaxing.
We were looking for some running trails, and unfortunately, no one at the spa was able to help us (they were out of printed maps of trails). However, there's a public beach in front of the resort, and if you're a runner and you abhor treadmills, you have at least a 4-mile stretch of packed sand during low-tide (starting at 4-4:30pm) that is perfect for running. You can easily fit in an 8-mile run before it gets too dark (around 5:30pm).

Pros: ultra comfy bed, free in-room wi-fi
Cons: none

Overpriced and overrated. Small villas but clean and tastefully decorated. Nice pools and view. No real beach and there is tar on the sand and rocks. Not worth the money. Not kid friendly.

We bought a s'mores package which was very nice but they failed to tell us there's no firepit!!!! They make you use a dirty old fireplace but we couldn't even reserve the chairs around it so we had to wait an hour for people to leave.

The only thing worth the price was the spa facility, adult pool, and massages.

Dear Niti V,

Thank you for your kind comments on Bacara relative to your most recent stay and which I am happy to respond to.

As most California beaches are in this region, Haskell Beach which is the beach located at Bacara is mandated by the California Coastal Commission to be mainatined in a natural state which disallows clean up and removal of any object washed ashore that is natural. Hence the seaweed. We do however at Bacara schedule regular Beach Clean Up days to clear the beach from foreign or unnatural objects. Sometime surpising what our team finds.

With regard to the ' Dirty Fireplace' we use a portable fire fit and organic wood provided to us by a local organic farm. We do not use a propane unit as we prefer to promote the ' Smores Experience' in its most natural manner.

I am sorry you feel that we are overpriced, overated and 'Not Kid Friendly' , as many of our repeat guests feel that we are a value rated resort in a beautiful setting with pricing that is comptetitive.

Hopefully we may have the opportunity to welcome you back to Bacara and your next experience will be more fulfilling. Thank you for your positive comments on our Spa and its services.

Very Truly Yours,
Graham Asher

We recently spent 3 nights at Bacara. It's very nice. The property and spa are outstanding. Our room had a balcony and a fireplace - very nicely sized. I don't think we were in the best location area on the property - might want to check room location - but don't get me wrong - still very nice.

The hotel is under rennovation. They have closed most of the rooms to re-do them as there is new managment. I imagine with refurbishment the place will be spectacular. It was cold while we were there and there was no heat - it was broken. They brought us a space heater which made it managable and they compensated for the inconvenience. I imagine all these things will be fixed with the completion of the rennovation.

There were weddings on the property both Friday and Saturday evening. They closed the really nice outdoor bars with fireplaces for the weddings. Might want to check if you are interested in that...

Staff is supurb - from the parking valets to the front dest - helpful and accomodating.

Once rennovated - I imagine it will be fabulous! As I said - the facility is wonderful - rooms large and beautiful - property superior.

Ahh, finally had a chance to stay at this wonderful place. Excellent visit that re-charged my batteries!! Plenty of options for relaxing - room, patio/balcony, pools, spa, beach (low-tide walk), fireplace, etc. Every interaction with staff was positive - they were there when we needed help, but otherwise very professional and unobtrusive. The room was quiet and included wonderful amenities: robes, slippers, candles, good smelling products, ipod docking station, tv (including cable guide and LOTS of free movie choices), wifi, relaxing/deep tub, etc. Other reviews mention dated rooms, but ours must have been a new one. Never heard any neighbors, stayed on the 3rd floor. Wide variety of fresh, healthy dining options. Room service was fast. Lunch at the Spa Cafe was delicious. Lots of fitness options - big gym with cardio machines & weights. Plus, pilates classes. Outdoor cardio/sculpting class with Barbara was tough and fun! Would have loved to get a spa treatment, but too pricey. Very quick and easy to get to downtown Santa Barbara (15-20 min drive), but just wanted to stay relaxing at the resort!

The Spanish style resort comprises of a moltitude of houses and buildings immersed in an exotic/Mediterranean vegetation on the bluffs of Goleta, a town a few miles north of Santa Barbara.
The whole resort, despite having families with kids, is very quiet and peaceful. The staff is extremely kind and happy to make your stay special (Francisco by the pool is a real expert) and the location is very convenient: 15 minutes from downtown Santa barbara and right on the ocean.
I've gone to Cabo once to seek similar type of getaway and I have to say, if you are lucky with the weather, this isn't any less than Mexico. Also, we got a beautiful warm sun in November which is a privilege.
Strenghts: pool area, nature, staff, balcony/terrace in every room.
weaknesses: you want my money and I get it. can't charge $30 valet parking a day and not give me the choice to self parking.

Stayed there 4 times and always a grand relaxing time. Spa facilities are the best, treating all your needs. The grounds are well manicured and rooms are superb. All buildings are currently being updated. The valet staff seems to have gone done a bit, not being as organized and speedy as previously. Having a drink, appetizers in the bar is always nice. Have eaten at all the restaurants on the property, but seem to enjoy the meals better in town, but of course you have to drive, which is about 15 miles.

Room Tip: Don't forget late check out/early check in and upgrade. Use AMX for special inclusions.
